World Class Championship Wrestling: April 1986
dawho5 replied to GeneJackson95's topic in Promotions
I am liking the heel turn of Iceman and the rise of Steve Doll. Bossman as Embry and Garvin's bodyguard (let's be honest here) is a great use of Traylor. The Funks as Super Ds angle should be awesome going forward. -

Satanico standing by while Creatchman and Paul E.'s goons beat up Martel is good. Good save by the Roadies on that. Floyd & Paul feuding should be fun. Roadies going over in the main is good booking. -
Missing Link getting frustrated is good. Hall is a really good developmental champ in 86.

There you go then. Two of the more recoginizable WoS guys having a great match. Three parts on youtube.

[1992-02-29-UWFi-Sekai Gannen 3rd] Hiromitsu Kanehara vs Masakazu Maeda
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in February 1992
Really good shootstyle match. Both guys kept up an incredible pace and sold the exhaustion well towards the end. Never heard of either and probably never will gain, but they put a good show on for 17 minutes in a way that is different from most shootstyle matches you see.- 13 replies

Always ready. You look like you are well-versed in WCW, so I won't go there. Any weak spots you need to address?

I run Wednesdays and a Saturday (rarely a Sunday) every 2 or 3 months. I don't really post house shows so I tend to act like they don't exist when loaning out wrestlers. I can spare you Bobby Jaggers and Dutch Mantell (two name guys that should be over just about everywhere) on non-Wednesdays and not on July 5th. The Rock 'n' Roll RPMs, Jonathan Boyd and Rip Morgan are also available on those days. Anyone on the roster really, but I went with guys who would be more of a fit for the area you'd be running. Boyd & Morgan I am not sure how long I have plans for. Jaggers and Mantell ould probably never be full members of any roster but PR as long as I am around . They were PR regulars. I have Steve Strong, who I truly have no room for right now and Brad and Bart Batten who fit that same bill. Strong is kind of like a Jim Powers with slightly more attitude. The Battens I would want to do a trade with the RPMs for down the road as they had a good run in PR. Thing is they only ran one babyface foreginer team. It went from Mark & Jay Youngblood to the RPMs to the Battens if I remember the order of it right. So I'll have the RPMs finish out their run and then swap them for the Battens if you want them. I'd honestly say the RPMs are an upgrade as babyfaces. If you work the dates out with rainmakerr you can bring in Bigelow and the Sheepherders as featured acts too.

All of the young gaijin get a chance to look good. I loved the Yamada/Owen match with a heel Owen. Liger was always better paying back a dickish heel than in any other mode. The 10 man elimination tag was indeed great and lived up to the hype. Facekickers getting the win is great because Kawada/Fuchi is one of those teams I wish we had gotten about a thousand more matches from IRL.

Could be that footage was easier to find in Japan.

Cooley and Johnson with a big win. I'm looking forward to Rheingans/Backlund too. Will it make Rheingans at the expense of Backlund or rejuvenate his career? Harley and Orndorff did not disappoint. Martel and Taylor cap off a great show with a show of respect after a great match. American Made is coming apart at the seams. St. Clair with a big win over Robinson but I think Robinson will have more to say about it. Rip Oliver coming to Paul Jones' aid is certainly a surprise for Valiant. Loved the main event and it's great to see Ted in a feud with Duggan right off the bat.

Reviewing Low Ki vs. Hotstuff Hernandez from IWA Midsouth 2004: I liked the opening with Ki establishing his strengths (quickness and the kicks) and then Hernandez catching him and going to his strength (power). It sets a really good tone that they carry through the match. I've read that Ki isn't big on selling, but he seems to keep the damage done to his back in mind most of the time as the match progresses. Good comeback by Low Ki but I thought the Kobashi chops were a little much. They get a little cute with the athletic spot exchange, but it stays within the confines of the story they are telling. Finish is a little odd to me. Was Ki really finishing with that running front dropkick at the time? Not my cup of tea, but they told a good story and stuck to it pretty well. It's a match I'd cal fun and watch again. RicheyEdwards I'll give you a match that you should enjoy. Akira Maeda vs. Tatsumi Fujinami from 1986 NJPW. If you have seen it I can certainly find another. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4u0xnm

I liked the Freebirds/Devastation match a lot. Midnights and RnRs!! Armstrong will not be happy with Fuller. I would agree Reed needs some backup. Baby Doll Is playing with fire. Magnum saving Martel from the cheap victory by the Russians would have sent the fans home happy.

Savage's interview was a real highlight for me. Really well done. Bad News and Sika making headlines is a good way to get some midcard talent over. The Harts should have a good run as tag champs regardless of opponent.

Leduc is looking really tough. Owen is up to his tricks even in Lutte. Sammartino getting the title shot should be entertaining. Oh my, the Killer Bees. Brunzell makes his return to Lutte. -
I hope American Made can keep things together if they don't win that match. Race vs. Orndorff and Taylor vs. Martel should both be great matches. Johnson and Cooley have their hands full with the Stud Stable. St. Clair and Robinson has been a great feud and I expect it to stay that way. Snuka and Mulligan will settle their differences but I don't think it will be in Philly. Speaking of Philly, they get my favorite match of the bunch, Hansen vs. Duggan.
-
Midnights/RnRs for the titles?!? Count me in!! I am a sucker for anything those two teams do. Everything else was great, especially the Magnum/Martel/Koloffs staredown. Just that tag match is my number three pairing of all time.

Keith again proves he has been watching Owen work. Kokina has been great and I am looking forward to Leduc and Kokina. Satanico beats Gordy with unwitting help from Hayes. I wish Satanico a long reign, but I worry about the Hayes/Gordy relationship. -
Some other stuff happened, and then the thing that SHOULD have happened in 1992 IRL happened. Awesome stuff and I'm happy to see Flair is the champ!

There are really only 2 DQ finishes, but a lot of wonky ones yes. Both DQs served a purpose. Bam Bam and Barrabas had been building up a while and something had to give. If you notice Barrabas hadn't done anything in the tag match and his team lost also. So he was feeling the need, but got it wrong. Again. And TNT hadn't lost yet, so as his manager would you rather have to talk about a submission loss or a DQ loss? Also, the fans got to see Profe get chased out of the arena by a vengeful Gama Singh. If you read the interview, it seems like Singh has more animosity towards Profe anyway. The other wonky finishes, most big name PR matches I have seen don't have superb finishes to them beyond the babyface going over at the end of a feud. Most Abby matches end with him retreating to the back as the babyface beats him up. for whatever reason the PR fans are rocking right along with it. A lot of matches end with both guys brawling outside the ring. But we do have a small sampling of PR matches from big shows. One big takeaway for me from the PR I've watched is that as long as the babyface is getting some shots in, be it a wonky finish, a DCO, whatever, the fans are still happy. They want to see good guys punching the bad guys, buckets of blood and the bad guy getting his one way or the other before they leave the arena. As an example of the crowds and Medico 1's awesome punches, which are the first offense you see. The Rougeaus play incredible heels and the crowd is spectacular even for PR.
-
I would agree. You gotta do what works for you. In Kevin's case he's running around the Memphis/Mid-South area and there are a ton of wonky finishes involving big names in Memphis. Also, it's the 80s. When big names hooked it up in the 80s you very rarely got a finish worth writing home about. I think we forget that due to the nature of modern wrestling.
-
I think bullshit finishes have a place. Modern WWE could use a lot less win trading. As long as they fit the character and the feud it works. 6-man was indeed awesome. But Black Irish vs. the Bullies would have stolen the show for me. Piper and Cactus would have been really good too. Blackman vs. Burke would have been a different kind of good, a little more comedy. I will agree that it's a huge show for a gym.

WWC Card Roberto Clemente Stadium April 19th, 1986 Mr. X & Y vs. the Rock 'n' Roll RPMs The RPMs use their usual smooth teamwork to control. Big dropkick by Lane to stop a Mr. Y comeback. The side slam/neckbreaker combo puts Mr. Y down for the 3. TNT w/El Profe vs. Gama Singh TNT and Gama Singh brawl back and forth for most of the match, TNT's chops and throat thrusts against Singh's punches, knees and chops. TNT starts to pull ahead after a big superkick. Gama Singh hits a big slam and backbreaker. A few rollups for nearfalls, then Profe tries to distract Singh by jumping on the apron. TNT ends up hitting Profe off the apron when Singh moves and is distracted, allowing Singh to hit a back suplex that sets up the camel clutch. Profe recovers before TNT taps out and clobbers referee Tomas Marin from behind for the DQ. Singh chases Profe to the back as the crowd cheers and blows their horns. Los Mercenarios vs. Los Super Medicos Barnburner of a brawl with Merc 2 and Medico 3 disappearing thrugh the entrance and emerging back into the arena bloody. While they were out Merc and Medico 1 brawled back and forth around the ring with Medico 1 hitting his signature punch rush. The crowd was rocking as all four brawled to the back and referee Victor Quinonez called the match a double countout. Huracan Castillo Jr. & Miguelito Perez vs. Jonathan Boyd & the Crusher w/Barrabas Barrabas surprisingly stays out of this match beyond his constant taunting of Castillo and Perez. The young Puerto Ricans start fast and get the crowd rolling with their babyface offense. Boyd hits Castillo while he's running the ropes and the New Zealanders take over. The crowd is big behind Perez when he finally gets the tag from Castillo after a miscommunication by Boyd and Crusher. Perez is a house of fire and hits his big powerslam on both Boyd (good pop) and the Crusher (big pop). Castillo hits a missile dropkick on Boyd for the three. The two young Puerto Ricans celebrate with the front row until both notice their fathers grinning in the entrance. Both run over for a big celebration the crowd eats up. Short Intermission Los Invaders (1 & 3) vs. Los Primos Starr © for the Caribbean Tag Team Titles Invader 3 has taped ribs and Invader 1 is looking the worse for wear after his match with Bam Bam. Ron and Chicky are taunting both with the belts, which backfires as it fires up both Invaders. The Starrs are on the receiving end of a beating that leaves Ron bleeding. Invader 1 gets caught with a few big knees to the midsection by Ron Starr and gets worked over. Invader 3 gets a big pop when he takes the tag, but ends up getting his ribs worked over when the momentum runs out. Invader 1 gets a HUGE pop when he gets the tag. As he is taking on both Starrs, los Pastores emerge from the back and start attacking los Invaders. Referee Ricky Vargas calls for the DQ. The Starrs clear ringside as los Pastores continue the assault on los Invaders. The flagpole is about to be brought into play when Invader 2, Hercules Ayala and Carlitos Colon emerge from the back to run los Pastores off. Bam Bam w/Barrabas vs. Hercules Ayala © for the NWA WWC Caribbean Heavyweight Championship Bam Bam seems ready to hit Barrabas pre-match. He has some angry words for his manager just before the bell. Bam Bam stops all of Ayala's power spots, but the big Puerto Rican can still stagger Bam Bam with punches. As the match progresses Bam Bam starts using his quickness advantage more and Ayala has to go to the leg. Bam Bam kicks Ayala off when he goes for the reverse figure four. Barrabas, who had grabbed a chair, is now on the apron. He hits Ayala with the chair as he hurdles towards the ropes right in front of referee Victor Quinonez, who calls for the DQ. Bam Bam is furious with Barrabas and decks him, knocking him out cold. The crowd cheers Bam Bam as he stalks backstage. Dutch Mantell vs. Bobby Jaggers Dutch is sporting a big bandage on his head from the TV and his shoe-baby whip as he enters first. Jaggers has both as well. He eats up the crowd's hatred. Mantell ambushes Jaggers with the whip and it's off to the races. Both men are a bloody mess five minutes in and the ring bell gets smeared with Dutch's blood. The brawl goes on for a while until Dutch gets a wooden chair from a fan in the front row and breaks off one of the legs. Jaggers high-tails it to the back faster than a man his size ought to be able to with Dutch not far behind as the crowd rabidly cheers Dutch on. Short intermission Domingo Robles vs. Invader 2 Invader 2 is still a little banged up, but manages to control 2/3 of the match against Robles and pin Robles after a double throat chop. Ricky Santana vs. Owen Hart for the vacant NWA WWC Light Heavyweight Championship Owen is out first with his brother Bruce. The crowd is booing and throwing garbage and Bruce is incensed. Owen brushes it off and Bruce follows suit. Ricky Santana gets a big reaction from the crowd, which further incenses Bruce. Owen again brushes it off, as well as Santana's obvious anger at him. Bruce seems like he is having a hard time dealing with it. The match is back and forth and clean as a whistle. Santana gets a nearfall with a running crossbody. He tries the fisherman's suplex but Owen reverses into a suplex before he can get the leg hooked and gets two. Owen wants the belly to belly but Santan floats over into an O'Connor roll for a nearfall. Owen surprises Santana with a small package for a nearfall. They exchange heated punches and Santana kicks a 50 yard field goal between Owen's legs. Owen's face goes red and Burce is livid at ringside yelling at referee Tomas Marin. The crowd is overjoyed and this gets Bruce even hotter. Santana hooks Hart and hits the fisherman's suplex for 3. Bruce is in both Santana and Marin's face as Marin hands Santana the belt. The crowd is going wild. Santana and Marin both try to explain to Bruce, but he shoves Santana. Santana rolls out of the ring and heads for the back, holding his belt. Bruce Hart tends to his brother Owen as the crowd continues to throw garbage into the ring. Abdullah the Butcher w/Chicky Starr vs. Carlitos Colon © for the NWA WWC Universal Championship Starr and Abdullah are pelted with garbage on their way to the ring. Colon gets the biggest reaction of the night. Abdullah ambushes Colon on his way to the ring with the fork and starts carving him up. The match goes to the ring and Chicky takes the fork from Abby. Referee Victor Quinonez conducts a search of Abdullah, which gives Colon some time to recover. Colon is able to mount a small comeback, but Abby just starts grinding him down. The elbow drop misses after an Abby slam and Colon is fired up! The crowd is rabid as Colon staggers Abby with punches and sends him to the corner with a jumping headbutt. Colon with a monkey flip out of the corner! Abdullah is staggering around with Colon's blood smeared all over his forehead from the headbutt. Colon gets the fork when Abdullah drops it and goes to work. Quinonez gets the fork from Colon, which gives Abby the opening for a throat thrust. They trade strikes with both getting a small measure of control. Chicky jumps on the apron as Colon headbutts Abby (the blood!) and Quinonez immediately goes over to remove Chicky. Colon shouts something at Chicky as Abby gets something from his tights. Colon is met with some sort of liqiud to the eyes when he turns around and Abby hits a rushing lariat off the ropes to knock Colon down. Chicky drops off the apron and Abby drops the elbow for three. Colon has not stopped pawing at his eyes and the crowd is stunned. Abdullah and Chicky celebrate with belt outside the ring as Quinonez checks in on Colon and starts sniffing the air. The crowd pelt Chicky and Abby with garbage as Chicky grins and raises Abdullah's arm. Ayala and all three Invaders come out to check on Colon, who has to be led out of the ring and to the back in front of a stunned crowd.

Keith Hart attacking Bruce is definitely not brotherly love. Good to see Castillo & Perez getting some love outside of PR. Always like seeing Brito get a win. Kokina is yet another dominant heel for you to play with. I love it! -
Invaders 2 and 3 wore them all the time. Invader 1 usually didn't by this point, but would wear the mask when teaming with either of the other two for solidarity. One of the things Hugo will often mention on commentary (he is an incredible babyface commentator) is how the masks hide the face of the wrestler and it makes it difficult for opponents to see if what they are doing is having any effect on the Invaders. Cool little bit of psychology there if you ask me.
