Wrestling's most shameless, most glorious exaggerations
...TG replied to MoS's topic in Pro Wrestling
I don't know if it was 400 exactly, but yeah he claimed that on (IIRC) Stern once a few years ago. This could be just a Hogan thread: * He claimed he tore every muscle in his back when he bodyslammed Andre at WMIII. * He's told a couple different stories about becoming the spokesman for what became the George Foreman grill - one was that he invested in Pastamania instead, another (IIRC) was that he didn't return his agent's call about the grill. * He's repeatedly claimed that he was the first choice for the Mickey Rourke role in "The Wrestler". And every time he says this, Darren Aronofsky releases a statement saying that Hogan was never considered. -
[1982-03-20-CWA-TV] Dutch Mantell vs Jerry Lawler (Loser Leaves Town)
...TG replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in March 1982
Just a beautiful angle, despite the bait and switch on the stipulation. And I thought the work was better than the arena match, too - more intense, and a faster pace.- 3 replies

Disagree with Sleeze here - kinda disappointing from my view. Pace was a bit too methodical from my view, and never really heated up. Maybe it was the VQ? Checking the poll results, this came in 5th. Maybe I need a rewatch.

Man, that Renee/Natalya segment was some hilariously shameless Subway product placement. OTOH, at least they didn't do some lame, unfunny skit like they've done in the past.
-
Man, if a wrestling pimp is problematic, wait until some bored journalist not in WWE's pocket decides to do some googling of Michael Hayes...

[1981-04-06-CWA-Mid-South Coliseum] Jerry Lawler vs Terry Funk (Empty Arena)
...TG replied to Loss's topic in April 1981
An all time performance by Lance here, holding the insane spectacle together with his deadpan commentary and banter with Terry. -
[1981-03-30-CWA-Mid-South Coliseum] Jerry Lawler vs Dory Funk Jr
...TG replied to Loss's topic in March 1981
Didn't have the drama and insane level of violence that the Terry match did, but I loved this too. 47 seems way too low but I'm only halfway through the first disc so who knows. -
We have a nice little face vs. face match going here until Tommy "accidentally" headbutts Dundee in the groin on a leapfrog attempt, acts sorry about it for a bit, and then small packages him for the pin. Then Tommy cuts an amazing promo on everyone in the territory, finishing up with Lawler (doing color with his leg broken).

[1994-12-16-RINGS] Akira Maeda vs Yoshihisa Yammamoto
...TG replied to Loss's topic in December 1994
I was shocked at this too! Though I thought it was because Maeda's takedowns looked so weak One thing RINGS had in abundance was crowd heat - this was intense as anything all yearbook. -
If they're having difficulty selling tickets, it sure isn't reflected in Ticketmaster, where only the super expensive seats and blocked-view sets are available, or StubHub, where you'll pay a hefty markup even for general admission.

I was amazed at the reaction he got. Granted, his return was completely unexpected, but that was a massive, sustained pop that went on for quite a long time.

Holy shit, Shane getting the biggest pop since Rock returned for first time. That is something.

I didn't say the gimmick was his fault, or even saying he doesn't deserve it by the standards of that HOF. It's just that given how different things are with the company's image these days, inducting a pimp is an odd decision.
-
I guess he's a good soldier for the company and I suppose there's value in that. But a company that is very publicly rated PG and whose heir apparent is corporate feminist Stephanie McMahon is inducting a wrestling pimp? What a strange decision.

That suplex on Roman while he had Dean in a fireman's carry was a helluva spot, but man it looked like it hurt.

I'm enjoying the hell out of this so far. As poorly booked as the promotion has been for the last year or so, Brock destroying people is just the best. There's three announcer tables, so maybe we get three Shield powerbombs?

Meltzer in his live updates said "the crowd was pretty hot with it being in Cleveland which is Ziggler's home town". I was thinking the exact opposite, felt they were kind of dead. Oh well, good match, and they woke up towards the end. Good show so far.

[1994-11-20-AJW-Big Egg Universe] Aja Kong vs Dynamite Kansai
...TG replied to Loss's topic in November 1994
Again and again I'm blown away by the stamina of the women in this era. The Toyota/Kong match was incredibly fast-paced, and an especially brutal bump from Aja on that reverse rana thing. And this just didn't let up much for 15 minutes. Then I look at the card and see that this was a semifinal, and Aja and Hokuto went 20! Joshi still isn't my cup of tea, but I will never not admire them.- 10 replies

[1994-09-17-USWA-TV] Brian Christopher/Doug Gilbert feud recap
...TG replied to Loss's topic in September 1994
Lance is doing yeoman's work here trying to sell this feud. And it's a lot of fun, especially in highlight form. Lance took an (accidental?) bump when Christopher jumped on Doug's back. Did Lance or Dave ever take a bump or get physical during the golden age? -
Ryback changed his ring gear? With RVD and Jimmy Hart largely inactive as of late, the airbrushed pro wrestling attire industry is near death. Support your local airbrusher, fellas.

Lets Stephanie get some legit heel heat rather than indifference?
