  1. Just like the battle royal, Toguchi is bleeding. Something struck me while watching this that Bruiser Brody comes off like a misbehaving child when hes no selling and merauding around the ring, rather than a scary foreign brawler.
  2. Im not familiar with this promotion. This was a super stiff brawl though, very rough chairshots and stiff slaps from Rusher. I really wish this had blood though, that would have added a lot I think.
  3. The big payoff for me was getting a Rick Martel highstep after a hot tag. Great action here, and I agree that Piper, Rose, and Martel were the standouts. I kept expecting something to happen with Buddy and the elbow pad, like it was loaded or something.
  4. This was insane. Just wild, out of control action the entire match. Crowd brawling, unprotected chairshots, throwing buckets, sprinting around the ring, Yokota throwing like 8 double arm suplexes. Does anyone know the backstory here? This really felt like a blood feud. I thought Saito was the standout wrestler here. She had some vicious offense with the stiff kicks, weird leg locks and figure four, and at one point hits some powerbombs! I also loved the way Yokota would go for pinning combinations but Saito would roll to her stomach, I love getting a sense of real struggle for pinfall attempts. Im hesitant to criticize it due to my lack of familiarity with the style, especially for the time period, but Yokota really didnt sell the leg much, and there wwas some sloppiness that I couldnt tell what was happening. A definite spectacle and one that everyone should watch I think.
  5. Really digging this Houston show so far. This is another example of simple, effective storytelling and sound psychology. The Spoiler is constantly going for his patented claw, and Ox is trying to stop him. Not too much to add other than whats been said already, but the slugfest leading to the draw at the end was an added treat. Nice match here.
  6. I went ahead and watched this out of order just because its in the thread here. Its easy to forget just how big Hogan is when hes against Andre or King Kong Bundy or whoever, but man is he massive.
  7. Hey its Bret Harts trainers! Kind of a neat moment there. The opening ceremony is GREAT and JJ taking forever to roll up the flag, combined with his outfot is pure gold. Kozack gives a ceremony of his own and really gets fired up st the beginning of the match, nice stuff. I thought Hito brought the match down a bit, he didnt seem to match the energy that Kozack had. I like the idea of slowing him down and keeping him in holds but it stared to feel rest hold-ish rather than working a hold. I liked the strike exchange building up for the finish though, with the quick shot, which Paul Boesch speculates about fingers to the throat of Kozack.
  8. Cool match here, very basic, but solid psychology and engaging throughout. I like the contrast of styles, with Thornton working more traditional European/British style and Boyd being a brawler. I liked the little cheapshots Boyd would throw in to try to get an advantage over the superior wrestler, like pulling the hair, thumb to the eye, just really standard but effective heel work that gets a response from the crowd. We get a bit of leg work from Boyd that leads to Thornton hitting a back-breaker that goes wrong, which lets Boyd pick up the win. Very enjoyable match that gets me even more excited about the project because this is something that I would never seek out to watch on its own, but is great to see in context of the rest of the show.
  9. I agree with everything said here. I really enjoyed the transitions here, everything felt earned and everything was logical. I wasnt sure how nuanced and stylized 1980 joshi would be but this was just great pro wrestling. I especially liked the finish. I was expecting a double count out or cheap disqualification but the double KO off a duplex isnt something Ive seen before I dont think. Very inventive and logical.
  10. its really cool to see this particular New Years introduction because its the start of a new decade. Thinking about all the changes the promotion will go through and all the matches well see adds another level of significance here.
  11. It appears Dink is proposing a hair match and if he loses hell shave his hair AND his face. I dont think this happens but what a visual that would be. Dink is really mad after the clip of him losing his clothes against Bubba Douglas. He has a borderline psychotic look on his face as the camera zooms in, which is cool.
  12. We get talk about fighting spirit and a double-countout finish. Is this Houston or All Japan?! I thought Paul Boesch really did a good job keeping the match moving forward. The action was pretty slow and typical of the wrestlers involved, but hey, I thought Graham did a decent job with his best hugs and leverage spots with the ring ropes.
  13. Angelo Mosca! Brody works a lot slower here, which does him no favors. He obviously has his faults but he is, at times, really able to create an exciting, chaotic atmosphere. We didnt get that here, and he came off fairly silly here, the big bump after the Baba kick being the standout one.
  14. I enjoyed seeing Irwin here, who is clearly outmatched in the mat but has a rough/sloppy feel to his work which is a nice contrast to the other three wrestlers.
  15. Andre comes off very charming in the interview and even predates Spinal Taps own Viv Savage by saying he has a good time all the time. The Battle Royal has rules similar to Battle Bowl or the one from GAB 89 with the two rings, and I loved Andre hanging out watching the action in ring two, only to instantly get in and toss Gino out after he wins ring two. Cool to see some of the names in here as well.

  19. The battle of wits between Bobby and Jake is great, and lets just get a quick fashion check: Vince in a bodybuilding leisure suit, Bobby in a Cosby-lite sweater, and Jake in baggy leather pants tucked into Wyatt Earp boots. Great segment.
  20. This perfectly plays into Stings strengths and hes great in short bursts like this where he doesnt have to be on offense for extended periods of time. Larry Z with some great heel work to counter it, looking for the opportunity to sneak in a knee or something. Good finish too, Sting is just too fired up to let go and destroys some refs for good measure.
  21. Incredible juxtaposition of these dramatic, emotional clips of past matches and feuds with some of the cheesiest, borderline opportunistic shots of Lawler with children with that song playing in the background. Awesome segment.
  22. Cool thanks for checking it out! We usually just stick to modern non-NJPW Japanese promotions but we branches out this episode, especially because Brennan hadnt seen the Flair/Steamboat series.
