  1. That certainly explains why the finish felt very sudden. Interesting!
  2. 2004 - Samoa Joe 2005 - KENTA 2006 - Bryan Danielson 2007 - Bryan Danielson 2008 - Bryan Danielson 2009 - Bryan Danielson 2010 - Bryan Danielson/Daniel Bryan 2011 - El Generico 2012 - Daniel Bryan 2013 - Daniel Bryan 2014 - AJ Styles 2015 - Roderick Strong 2016 - Chris Hero 2017 - Zack Sabre Jr.
  3. Yeah, AJ pre-NJPW wasn't very close to the best in the world conversations for me either. Had a very spotty career up to that point - some great stuff, but lots of shit in there, too. Funnily enough, some of his best work from the 2000 - 2009 decade is, in my opinion of course, the ROH trilogy w/ Bryan. Bryan brought out a completely new, fresh side out of AJ in those matches.
  4. Fun work on the mat, both guys battling to get the control over each other to start things off. It’s a joy to watch because Danielson & Quack are absolute masters. Once the pace quickens, things spill to the outside & Bryan hurts his knee. Quack starts targeting it, but not very aggressively. He leaves an opening for Danielson who starts targeting his arm in very vicious fashion. Quack is in big trouble, selling the arm excellently, as Danielson works all over his arm. He gets some great comebacks in because there were a few times when Danielson got caught up talking shit & posing for the crowd, but ultimately, the American Dragon’s attack on his arm is just too much. An absolutely wonderful match that felt like a true chess game w/ both guys looking to capitalize on each other's brief mistakes. ****1/4
  5. Generico is coming into this w/ a banged up shoulder, but Danielson wants to fight him regardless. So you get an injured El Generico going against Bryan Danielson. That is an absolutely perfect dynamic, right there. Generico starts the match with good fire, going after Danielson right away, but that ends pretty quickly as Danielson catches his arm while he is attempting a big splash from the top rope. Danielson tortures the crap out of Generico by stretching & beating that injured arm of his, but Generico won't go down without a goddamn fight. It wasn't gonna be as easy of a night as Danielson might've thought - Generico shows tremendous heart as he refuses to quit, gets some big nearfalls & big comebacks in. Danielson sells this with his facial expressions perfectly. The Cattle Mutilation -> Generico's foot on the ropes -> Elbows which Generico sells like death -> KICKOUT! was an absolutely tremendous sequence. And that last big Generico comeback, my goodness! That Brainbuster nearfall was great as was the finish with Danielson just destroying the man. What an amazing, energetic underdog tale which was told perfectly in front of a red hot crowd that played into the dynamic also perfectly. A classic. ****1/2
  6. Lots of pandering to the crowd in the early stages w/ some very nice back & forth work on the mat as well. Eventually Brookside tweaks his knee & Danielson attacks it like a shark - he works it over for rest of the match, and the control is firmly on his hands for the rest of the thing as well. Bryan is great working over Brookside, and while the finish was a bit anti-climatic, it was also clever - Danielson went to the top, leaving an opening for Brookside who IMMEDIATELY capitalized on it & won. Dragon had the control from the moment Brookside hurt his knee until that brief moment where he tried to go & hit that diving headbutt. Very solid storytelling. Really good match. ***3/4
  7. This is often pimped as one of the absolute best, if not THE best match in wXw’s history. Finally watching it for myself, can’t say I was disappointed. Two wrestlers who share same philosophies as in what they want from big wrestling matches to look & feel like putting on an absolute classic. It’s nasty, hard hitting stuff with Walter doing most of the work on top while Sekimoto fights from underneath. Worth the hype. ****1/2
  8. Simply beautiful. I love the uniqueness ZSJ brings to New Japan - all of his New Japan Cup matches have been such a breath of fresh air. The uniqueness of this match in particular hit me big time; it's a big tournament finals match that goes over 30 mins in New Japan. And it's mostly spent on the mat, working over limbs & displaying a true struggle. Zack was vicious working the crap out of pretty much every limb Tana had to offer & Tana's selling was excellent - also with it being Tana in a big match situation, the drama & passion was through the roof. Absolutely loved that. What a match. ****1/2
  9. A very "standard" tag match in structure, but it's so well executed. Starts off with a big shine for Team Ringkampf - WALTER & Thatcher completely own RISE there by beating the crap out of them, in particular Da Mack. Eventually Da Mack & Bad Bones get an opening though, which leads to a FIP segment with Thatcher. I've said it at least a million times while writing about Ringkampf's tag matches, but I'll say it again; Thatcher is the best FIP in the business. It's an absolute pleasure watching him sell his ass off, he could make anyone look good. Da Mack's offense isn't exactly very good looking, but damn, Thatcher's selling made it look like million bucks. At this point, RISE is firmly on control, Thatcher tries to fight back, and just when he is about to get the hot tag to WALTER, Bad Bones goes & sweeps WALTER from the apron. That pisses the big lad off & he comes to the ring to chop the shit out of RISE. That leads to the ref telling WALTER to get out of the ring, because he wasn't the legal man, which now gives Bad Bones an opening to take him out while Da Mack takes care of Thatcher in the ring & gets his team the W. Wonderful match. Thatcher & WALTER are the best duo on the planet. ****
  10. An absolutely epic finals match to a great tournament. Absolute Andy & David Starr are 2 characters who's stories were told perfectly throughout the 16 Carat '18 - you got the underdog babyface Starr trying his hardest to achieve what is his biggest goal & then you got the grizzled veteran in Andy who cheat his way to the finals by using cheap tactics in every match that he had. A perfect characters clash, right there. Starr's babyface performance in this is absolutely phenomenal - if it wasn't for Johnny Gargano pulling out that magic at Takeover vs. Andrade Almas, what Starr did here would be my pick for the best babyface performance in quite a while. His selling was top notch, his body language was terrific & his fire was great. Andy was tremendous beating the crap out of him too & his character work was tremendous, as it was all tournament long. A classic match - one of the best ones in wXw's history. Just a perfect storm of the ultimate babyface in David Starr meeting the absolute bastard that is Absolute Andy. As of now that I am writing this, it's my #3 MOTY. ****3/4
  11. Absolute Andy cheats all the way through this one, going against the "the mat is sacred" Thatcher. Such a great, fun dynamic. It created for some nice drama & they told the story of it perfectly. Great match. ****1/4
  12. Just as good as their G1 meeting from last year. A complete ZSJ torture show w/ him breaking Naito down, limb by limb. When Naito was mounting a comeback in the end, getting ready to hit that Destino, I was ready to say he was getting too much offense in, but then ZSJ countered that & the match ended! Just at the perfect time. Great match. ****
  13. You know a match is good when it has a Canadian Destroyer spot in it that isn't bad! I was ready to not feel this match at all, because YOSHI-HASHI is such a boring performer, but damn he brought it here. Showed most personality he has ever shown in a match; good fire & those slaps. Great stuff. Ibushi was great as usual w/ his deadly offense & sick bumping. Very good stuff. ***1/2
  14. The Naito match made Taichi look like a credible Heavyweight contender in New Japan, but this one absolutely established that. Him using all the Kawada signature moves got me FIRED UP & when he hit that Ganso Bomb, this match went from very good to great. Gotta give much credit to Tana, he made Taichi look like a star by giving him much of the match. ****
  15. Two bad bulls colliding in an explosive smack/bombfest which was paced masterfully. I liked it way more than their G1 meeting from 2015, actually. ****1/4
  16. What a goddamn MARVELOUS match. The most consistent wrestler in the world continues his streak of terrific performances in his JUST TAP OUT New Japan Cup tour & SANADA delivers the match of his career so far. The storytelling was top freaking notch - you got SANADA actually owning Zack in the early stages w/ the wrist control. Zack gets more & more frustrated as SANADA continues showing that he is no slouch when it comes to ZSJ's game; eventually though Zack finds a way & starts targeting that arm of SANADA in brutal, nasty, classic Zack Sabre Jr. fashion. SANADA sells it super well. The feel of urgency & physicality is off the charts at that point, SANADA just like that becomes the underdog & tries to fight off Zack's nasty work over him, but in the end, just like Ibushi & Naito, he just TAPPED OUT. ****1/2
  17. Absolutely blown away by this. Felt like a real throwback to the wars legends like Bryan Danielson, Samoa Joe, Roderick Strong & Nigel McGuinness had for that ROH World Championship. The 25+ minutes were spent expertly - they let things breathe & built everything perfectly. Fantastic, physical action. Told the story of the ace of ROH in Jay Lethal making 'a man' out of Dalton Castle. I am confident in saying that what they did there resulted in the best ROH match since the 2012 Ladder War between Generico & Steen. It represented everything those 3 letters, ROH, have stood for in the last 16 years. A classic. Also BOBBY CRUISE! What a man! ****3/4
  18. There's some sequences where I think the match became a little too "cute", but all in all, this was an absolutely great weapons trios warfare. The SCU lads especially did such a good job selling the gimmick of the thing w/ their viciousness. Great, brutal spot action w/ some really great psychology with the continuity of Matt Jackson's banged up back. ****1/4
  19. This was such a positive surprise! And by surprise I mean as in I had absolutely ZERO expectations for it going in. Scurll & Martinez wrestled a fantastically paced sprint. Awesome action from start to finish. ***3/4
  20. This was just absolute fireworks. The atmosphere was unreal w/ Ilja's return & the action was red hot from start to finish; Ilja delivered an excellent underdog performance, taking a hellacious beating from Bad Bones & especially WALTER, Bad Bones played his role of the confident, but still scared champ perfectly & WALTER was WALTER. And WALTER equals awesomeness. ****1/2
  21. The opening portion of the match does a great job establishing the fact that not only is Murphy the bigger, more powerful of the two, but also the quicker one. Ali establishes that he is no slouch either, he one ups Murphy & mocks his taunt - that lead to a DISGUSTING lariat thrown by Murphy. Great stuff. The match is wrestled with more & more sense of urgency as it goes on - both guys did a TREMENDOUS job doing that. You can feel Ali's desperation as he is pretty much getting outclassed - he gets one big opening though. He does a goddamn NASTY 450 to the arm of Murphy; that was absolutely vicious & Murphy sells it like death. Ali finally got a gameplan going; he starts targeting Murphy's arm at every chance he gets, weakening it big time as the match goes on. Murphy sells it greatly. Like I mentioned, the urgency just keeps on rising & rising. Murphy knows his arm is fucked, but he still risks it by doing big dives & moves (still selling in superb fashion) - he knows what's at stake. This match honestly did the best job in recent memory in putting over it's stipulation of winner gets _____. The finish is great w/ Murphy selling that arm like it's about to explode & Ali capitalizing on the damage he had done. Amazing stuff. GODDAMN. Blew me away - Buddy Murphy is indeed "the best kept secret" in WWE; had no idea he had this kind of stuff in him! ****1/4
  22. Very similar to their epic PWG meeting that happened 8 years after this one. Of course neither one of the 2 were as polished w/ their in ring work & personas as they are now, but you can see flashes of what’s about to come for both guys. Walter dominates with his hard hitting move-set & strength advantage while Zack tries to chop down the bigger man w/ his strikes. It's a great match between a pairing who could produce one in their sleep. ****
  23. I have never heard anyone talk about this match, but goddamn it's absolutely amazing. The early stages see Danielson annoy Walter greatly; he pretty much outclasses him in their grappling exchanges, but he does it while talking shit & delivering some cheapshots to the big lad. Walter gets more & more pissed, but as he starts to get some offense going, Danielson attacks his knee. He targets it like an assassin throughout the match - all the while talking shit & breaking rules, too. Walter gets some brief comebacks as the match goes - even unleashing some of those brutal chops he is now famous for, but ultimately Danielson's in ring generalship is too much; he just cuts off every comeback Walter gets very quickly. Amazing stuff. Terrific psychology & an absolutely great performance by Dragon. Kind of a gem, because as I said, I've never heard ANYONE talk about it. ****1/2
