Goto & Shibata delivered a beautifully violent match, a finale to their 2013 - 2014 singles match saga with Goto finally getting a win over Shibata. I thought it was even better than their great Dominion match - it was just as hard hitting as that one, but this was paced in more dramatic fashion. I loved it. And I gotta say that the whole vibe of the Dome crowd, their "oooh's" & roars for both men really added to the match as well. ****1/2

A 3 minute young lion vs. a veteran asskicker. HELL YEAH. Yohei shows good fire & his strikes look great - Shibata sells just enough for him, and of course the man is fantastic on the offense. That Boston Crab looked brutal. ****

Not as explosive as their G1 match, but then again, there aren't many matches out there that are. I liked the pacing in this one a lot - it was great that in their 2nd match they changed it up a little bit & had a more slow paced matches that built & built as it went on. Thought both guys, in particular Ishii, did some really neat selling there & of course the offense of both looked as great as ever. The 2nd chapter of the Shibata vs. Ishii rivalry was a very enjoyable - a great match. ****

Shibata's last match before he left New Japan in 2006 was against Tanahashi. This was their first meeting since Shibata's return to the company in 2012. Love how, as they are about to lock up, Shibata just SLAPS Tanahashi, showing right away what he is all about. The match is actually quite similar in it's structure as their 2006 Dome meeting - Shibata is the offense for most of it, he does a tremendous job just kicking Tana's ass & Tana is really good selling it. All of Tana's comebacks were really good too & I loved the finish; that was a great way of telling that Tana just BARELY survived, just BARELY escaped the asskicking Shibata's was giving him, as he got that flash counter roll up to the GTS he was about to receive. Great stuff. ****1/4

[2013-08-04-NJPW-G1 Climax] Tomohiro Ishii vs Katsuyori Shibata
ShittyLittleBoots replied to Loss's topic in August 2013
A motherfuckin' slugfest & a half (to say the least) w/ an exceptionally explosive pace right from the get go - loved the crowd when Ishii & Shibata started pacing on their corners before the bell rang, and oh boy when that bell did rang, they just went at it w/ hard hit after hard hit, bomb after bomb, bomb after bomb. The strikes, the explosiveness, the length of the thing + the amazing timing of the 'can-be-corny'-Fighting Spirit stuff make this a real special deal. ****1/2- 4 replies

[2013-06-22-NJPW-Dominion] Hirooki Goto vs Katsuyori Shibata
ShittyLittleBoots replied to Loss's topic in June 2013
Stiff strikes, brutal suplexes. This is balls to the walls action of this style from start to finish, and it's super enjoyable. **** -
They start this off hot right away by immediately starting to brawl. That eventually leads to Shibata gaining the advantage, and we get him working on top while Makabe fights from underneath. Shibata is obviously great beating the crap out of Togi, but what surprised me here was Makabe's GREAT performance - loved his selling of Shibata's beatdown, and his hope spot Lariat & his big comeback that lead him to victory were absolutely TREMENDOUS. Overall both guys were excellent & put on, what is the MOTN (in my eyes) of Wrestle Kingdom 7. Great match. ****1/4

Looking at the participants, I am not surprised to say that this match, did in fact RULE. Great stuff from start to finish - loved the beginning w/ Ishii & Shibata going at it - you could see they got SOMETHING in there with their chemistry. Nakamura & Shibata brawling outside the ring was fun, Nakamura & Sakuraba did some neat work on the mat, but goddamn, my favorite thing about the whole match was the exchanges between one Stone Pitbull & the one Gracie Hunter himself. Judging by what we got here, I think a singles meeting between them could've & most likely would've rocked my world - Sakuraba beating the crap out of Ishii, as Ishii sold that beautifully, was amazing, as was Ishii just bulldozing through Sakuraba w/ his amazing offense. Great match. ****

I just actually watched that match vs. Nakamura & Ishii, and loved every second of it. But yeah, I totally get what you mean with that - Naka & Shibata were the only pairing that weren't really in the ring much together.

The crowd was superb in this & really helped to elevate the match quality. Inoue was AWESOME, he was man on a mission trying to bring down the MMA invaders - all of his work over Shibata was great, even though I thought while I was watching the match that he got to do a little too much offense & that Shibata was on the selling-end of things a little too much, BUT by the end I was all about it as the crowd response to it was perfect. Really good, borderline great match. ***3/4

Shibata's first match in NJPW since 2006. And it's amazing. It goes for about 3 minutes, but it's amazing. Sakuraba & especially Shibata get super heat from the crowd as they beat the shit out of young lion Hiromu. Their offense is BRUTAL. Hiromu also gets little offense in, and all of that RULES. He shows great fire & his strikes to Shibata at the beginning were fantastic. Fantastic stuff all around - awesome crowd heat, amazing work on the offense by Laughter7, great fire, selling & brief offense by Hiromu, and Inoue plays his role well too. He didn't do much, but he played his part. ****

Shibata's interactions in the early stages w/ Marufuji & especially Morishima are all kinds of awesome. His stuff w/ Maru has some really great back & forth exchanges, and his stuff w/ Morishima, my goodness. Really made me bummed out that we never got a singles match between them during this time period, as they were involved in 2 excellent tag classics on the opposing teams. Ibushi is very much treated as an afterthought by Maru & Mori, as he had only been in the business for about 2 years around the time this happened. Love when Shibata & Mori are trading blows, and Ibushi tries to join in by striking Morishima from the back, Morishima just completely ignores him. He doesn't feel the strikes by this young flippy fella. That leads to a great FIP segment w/ Ibushi getting beaten & stretched by Maru & Mori. Great stuff. Shibata's hot tag is great too, he runs wild on Marufuji for quite a while until Maru tags in Morishima, which leads to him & Shibata rocking the place again. Once Shibata tags Ibushi in, the lad FINALLY gets to unleash his offense on Morishima - he shows him that he is no joke as he manages to briefly stun him. That doesn't last for long though, as it ultimately lead to Morishima just crushing him with a DISGUSTING Lariat & a Backdrop. Amazing stuff. ****1/2

Love the mat work in this one - there's a really great sense of urgency to it, especially to everything Monma does. He grabs every hold w/ such an awesome fashion that it comes off as super dangerous. I love it. Shibata was obviously great too, he was right there w/ Monma on the mat & his strikes looked as deadly as ever. Great match. ****

[2006-02-26-Big Mouth Loud] Katsuyori Shibata vs Alan Karaev
ShittyLittleBoots replied to GOTNW's topic in February 2006
Alan Karaev is a huge lad & he just clobbers Shibata w/ his strikes. Shibata sells like a champ for the man, and overall he rocks the underdog role so well here. Shibata going after the leglock in the early stages was awesome, and then him using it again to gain the victory was also awesome. Banging match. ***3/4- 3 replies

[2006-01-04-NJPW] Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Katsuyori Shibata
ShittyLittleBoots replied to GOTNW's topic in January 2006
Shibata just kicks Tanahashi's ass in wonderful fashion - Tanahashi is absolutely GREAT selling that beatdown and all of his brief comebacks are really good. Tanahashi's selling & Shibata's work on the offense really make this a classic. ****1/2- 3 replies

[2005-08-04-WRESTLE-1] Jun Akiyama vs Katsuyori Shibata
ShittyLittleBoots replied to Loss's topic in August 2005
This match is incredible. Starts off super hot with Shibata busting Akiyama open w/ a couple of brutal looking (& sounding) kicks - that pisses Akiyama off greatly, and he proceeds to beat the crap out of young Shibata for that, including throwing a dozen chairs on top of him. GREAT GODDAMN STUFF. The match remains intense & brutal till the end, and it's such a joy to watch. ****1/2- 11 replies

[2004-11-03-NJPW] Toshiaki Kawada vs Katsuyori Shibata
ShittyLittleBoots replied to Loss's topic in November 2004
An incredibly violent, brutal sprint. The most badass wrestlers of their generations beat the absolute crap out of each other - loved Kawada's selling of Shibata's stuff, in particular the slap he sells after their big strike battle was amazing. Loved Shibata using Kawada's signature stuff too, that was a great touch. AWESOME match. ****1/4- 8 replies

This match RULES. They only go about 6 minutes, but in those 6 minutes they pack so much great, fun action into the match. Everything comes with a great sense of urgency too. Loved it. ****

Young Shibata gives Takayama a lot of trouble here & it's awesome. He gets to do a lot of work over Takayama, just beating the crap out of him w/ his strikes & trying to put him away with his submissions. Takayama sells it greatly & gives such a selfless performance overall - I am sure he could've just beat the crap out of Shibata w/ Shibata getting a few hope spots in, but no, Shibata actually spends most of the match on the offense. And once it's time for Takayama to take it home, he does it in fashion that tells you he really got shit kicked out of him by this youngster. Superb stuff in just under 7 minutes. Great match. ****

Tenryu makes his entrance first. Then out comes Shibata to a pretty weird sounding Deep Purple ripoff theme - Tenryu is wasting no time, as while Shibata is still walking down the ramp, he starts walking towards him, which leads to Shibata running towards him too & they collide for the first time in this match. Tenryu throws Shibata to the crowd. AWESOME. Shibata makes his way back to the ring & starts kicking the crap out of Tenryu. He gets a nice little control segment doing exactly that, and after that it's very 50/50 with the two just destroying each other. There's also a legitimate holy shit spot in there. A goddamn great sprint. ****1/4
-
Even better than I remembered it being in 2014. It's a classic sprint smackfest between two of the hardest hitting, sprint puttin' lads in New Japan. Tells Honma's 2014 G1 underdog story quite well too w/ him throwing everything he got at Shibata, only for Shibata to ultimately put him away. Excellent stuff. ****1/2

[1994-02-24-NJPW-Fighting Spirit] Jushin Liger vs Shinya Hashimoto
ShittyLittleBoots replied to Loss's topic in February 1994
THE Junior Heavyweight of New Japan going against THE Heavyweight of New Japan. And the match is just as good as it looks. Liger delivers a fantastic David performance as he tries to chop down the much bigger Hashimoto by going after his leg - great strategy, as Hashimoto established in the early parts of the match that size truly matters. He is AWESOME kicking Liger's ass (& Liger is really great bumping + selling), and his selling of Liger's work was pretty much perfect. The finishing stretch w/ Liger getting those sweet, sweet nearfalls until Hash just beat the shit out of him was also really, really, REALLY great. Fantastic match. ****1/2- 11 replies
