"He's ambitiously stupid" - Why Scott Keith's new book is scary bad
MikeCampbell replied to Bix's topic in Megathread archive
It wasn't an in-depth and detailed as all of what you posted, but yes, we pretty much agreed that Larry was full of it. You pointed out the losses to Bruno, and the fact that he was protected better than most afterwards, but he was never pushed as a serious threat to Backlund. -
"He's ambitiously stupid" - Why Scott Keith's new book is scary bad

This is the story according to Larry on the new KC DVD, so take it for whatever it's worth. Larry felt like he was getting screwed over, because he was the top heel and drawing the crowds, but Backlund was getting the credit and the compensation for it. Larry was scheduled to face Bob for the title and made a pitch to Vince, sr. for the belt, saying it'd make him that much more hated. Vince wasn't interested and after some back and fourth Vince told him "Let's just forget it." Larry no-showed a few spot shows, claiming Vince fired him (knowing Vince was on vacation and he couldn't be reached). When the office finally reached Vince, he came back and had another meeting with Larry. They agreed for Larry to go back to work and go with the flow, and in return Vince would run Larry/Bruno at Shea, with a big payday for Larry. After Shea, they had no more interest in him, so he was in the mid card. Anytime they'd want him to lay down, he'd refuse because Bruno never pinned him, so if Putski, Morales, etc. did, the it'd just make Bruno look bad. The frustration eventually boiled over and Larry left in early '81. -

Even more so when Larry himself has said that Vince Sr. wasn't interested in putting the belt on him. -
And, in the youshoot, he talks about the Orndorff/Vader fight as though it happened right in front of him. Even though he was the WWF Champion at the time.

I'm halfway through his youshoot, and despite the fact that he's almost always totally full of it, you can't deny that he's a really funny guy.

Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 3
MikeCampbell replied to Loss's topic in Megathread archive
If you're talking about Pro Wrestling This Week, an almost complete set of shows from 1987 made it's way onto Classics a few months ago. I'll see if I can find the discs and check the early 87 episodes to see if I find that angle. Found the discs but not the angle. Sorry. Thanks for checking, Goc. It's just one of those angles that's always piqued my interest, mostly thanks to how much Corny loves talking about it. -
Even though it was delayed for months, thanks to their own stupidity, I really think that the Rockers showed up ath the perfect time in the WWF. They were the only tag team at the time that had the combo of being talented, experienced, and also were young and 'happening.' Dynamite's back was pretty much fried. Bret and Jim had just recently turned babyface and they were popular, but not the same way that Shawn and Marty were. Roma and Powers never shook the jobber label. The Rougeaus were about to turn heel, or already had. Were the Killer B's even still around?

What he said! I never get sick of watching that Razor vs. Crush match, only because Polo and Monsoon get talking about Fuji Vice.

Yes, from a Pat Tanaka kick. It's on the yearbook.

Does anyone know offhand if there's any footage from Doug Furnas' debut in Continental, where he rips the door off the cage. Cornette loves bringing that up, and how he stole that for Kane's debut. -
According to Rajah is was Leo Kruger that worked A-Ry, so unless they changed Brodie's name from Luke Harper to Leo Kruger, not him.

IRS vs. Mike Rotunda vs. Michael VK Wallstreet
MikeCampbell replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in The Microscope
I watched IRS vs. Marty Jannetty from the 1993 Survivor Series Showdown special, and it was all kinds of awful. IRS never makes it out of first gear, and because he controls the bulk of things, Jannetty doesn't get out of first gear either. Jannetty does what he can, he acts groggy to get over his head being rammed into the stairs, and he takes a huge bump off of the Write-Off. I'll probably watch it again tomorrow to see if a second viewing brings anything new to light. From the same show, Crush vs. Virgil kills it, mostly because Virgil is dead set on having a good match whether or not Crush feels like it (p.s. he doesn't). Yes, VIRGIL outworked IRS. EDIT: A second viewing showed me that it wasn't as lopsided as I'd originally thought, but Will's assessment of watching paint dry is still pretty much dead on. -
There's Muraco promo from TNT on some Coliseum video where he's trashing Ricky Steamboat, and that he knows some "fat broads" that will make Steamboat's fans get sick, or something to that effect.

The Funk clone stuff was really apparent toward the end of his career. He subbed for Funk at Clash 7 (plastic bag angle), he was brought into Studd Stable as Funk's replacement when Terry left WCW. Any footage of his tag run with Orton in the Southeast out there. Cornette once claimed that the early Midnight Express double teams were stolen from Slater and Orton.
-
The two promos of his on the 1992 yearbook blew me away, especially the second one he cut on Warrior, which makes me wonder if he's almost been tainted by the 'half the brain' promo from WCW. Not that long ago I watched Halloween Havoc '90, and Sid put on a pretty good performance in the main event, much better than Sting.

Good lord, this rules beyond belief. Lyger and Sammy hate one another and that's pretty much all you need to know. They work rather tight, Sammy really seemed to be trying to stretch Lyger in that armbar, and they throw in some stiffness and mask ripping for good measure. I can see why some wouldn't care for Lyger getting right up after missing the senton, but it wasn't a big deal to me, Lyger appeared to roll through the spot rather than take a flat bump.

[1992-04-14-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Terry Gordy
MikeCampbell replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
I liked this, but I didn't love it. Both guys were game, Misawa much more than Gordy. I loved the spot where Misawa was turning for an elbow and Gordy saw it coming and dropped him with lariat.- 12 replies

If this comes to fruition, then some footage of David Von Erich's heel run in Florida is a must.

All the recent Bret Hart talk has me thinking about exactly *when* various workers entered their primes. Like I said in the Bret thread, I thought that Will giving Bret all four years of '94-97 was generous of him, especially with his extended absence in '96. But the more I think about it, between the classic he had with Austin, and his tweaking the UT formula to suit his needs and produce a grossly under appreciated match, I can see making a case for including that year for him. So here's a few other workers that I'm curious about when exactly their primes would be considered. Sergeant Slaughter Jun Akiyama (I would guess the consensus is '96, but it's absurd to me that he hit his prime four years after his debut and has been going for over 20 years now) Shinjiro Ohtani (see above) Terry Gordy Nikita Koloff Rick Martel

[1992-04-25-WCW-Saturday Night] Interview: Nikita Koloff
MikeCampbell replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
This was a nice segment. Logically explaining Koloff's heel turn the year before to turn him babyface now, and making sure to bury the recently departed Luger.- 11 replies
