I'm curious why you think Bock will finish lower for you this time? Ever since their respective fed's 80s sets my opinions of both guys have done nothing but go slowly steadily up. Right now my answer is Bock but by the time my ballot goes in I could see Fujinami contending for a top spot too.

Deathmatch Wrestling: How much is Too Much?
Clayton Jones replied to KawadaSmile's topic in Pro Wrestling
I agree with this but also add syringes to my "fuck no" list. Even though I know they're typically safe. -
However, Hangman Page is awesome. https://mobile.twitter.com/theAdamPage/status/1498036441754046471

Username onlxn?? I'm not Twitter savvy so I had no idea what illustrious heights he'd risen to. He was one of my favorite DVDVR posters and the reference point for half the PWG DVDs in my collection. If you're able to get Antelope on next you'll make my life complete. Great episode, I don't know if the joke was literally that Stallone has recut Rocky IV to be taken more seriously (which he has) or that that was a total coincidence, but it was very amusing either way.

As a Philadelphian who won't apologize for much of the bad wrap the city gets, I will apologize for this crowd. So awful. I went to high school with a girl who might as well have been the Flair mark that sounded like she was right by the camcorder. I tried to watch this years and years back but couldn't get past the crowd, but rewatched it for a cause for GWE and am glad I did. Everyone in this is great, even working with and against this audience, and Liger looks every bit the GOAT that he is. Really loved Steamboat throughout as well. I thought the finish was a little rushed but I don't know what would have worked better given the circumstance. Really glad this was preserved despite the pre-mutant fans they had to endure.

[1981-03-16-WWF-MSG, NY] Andre the Giant vs Sgt. Slaughter
Clayton Jones replied to Loss's topic in March 1981
I would have liked if Sarge got just a touch more in this, I was legitimately disappointed when he went in his tights but didn't produce a foreign object. Still this was extremely satisfying and a well worked clash from two guys who are excellent working all the way to the back. I loved the way Andre overwhelmed Slaughter early, someone his size moving quickly with purpose and skill is such an awesome sight. -
That sounds like a high quality block of footage. Fascinating stuff!

I feel fairly certain I'll nominate SUWA eventually if nobody else does.

DMJ absolutely nailed it and I love that KitH reference.

Great analysis. I have Douglas penciled in as someone to look at as a "possibly" but your post really echoes a lot of my thoughts on him. I have been a bit higher on his rookie era but some of it falls flat too. I was really enjoying digging into the Hollywood Blonds feud with him and Steamboat for a while there. He won't be a high priority for my GWE viewing but I won't rule him out 100% at this point.

Awesome stuff! I wish I had the time to keep up on Gresham like you do. I'll reference this post when I start tackling his '21 work for certain.

Danhausen was good in a limited role in AIW in the Production before he fully developed this gimmick, for whatever that's worth. I agree with the sentiment that he's at least a decent pro wrestler underneath the media machine he's created.

There are very, very few ex-WWE guys who would have done that Gage match, which is what started all of this for Cardona.

Ishii was definitely being noticed and talked up on message boards at least back to the early 2000s. Edit: made the same point previous page lol. But yeah, sometimes I watch modern Ishii and I love him, sometimes I yearn for simpler times. He'll be a tough one to assess.

While I'm not disagreeing with any of that, the Flair feud also seemingly improved Sting's approach to pro wrestling leaps and bounds. From what I've seen previous to that era of Sting he was fairly interchangeable with Hellwig.

Just want to mention I still really, really love watching him and Nakajima wrestle each other. At this point both are fighting to sneak into the back end of my ballot but if they wrestled like they do against each other year round they'd have much more comfortable spots.

I voted Danielson but I think you made fantastic points Loss. Stuff I'll strongly consider when evaluating Aces who have had long successful runs while also producing great work.

He posts on Instagram about drinking so not so much these days. Has reasonably good taste in beer too. -
[2010-07-10-NOAH] Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Go Shiozaki
Clayton Jones replied to GOTNW's topic in July 2010
I thought this match was good. Both guys were really in the moment and feeding off the crowd. Shiozaki's selling early was great although from the point of the moonsault on obviously things go a bit off the rails and they're just working to get through to the end. Tanahashi gives a great performance beginning to end and is tough as hell for working through that shot to the face. Or stupid if you want to take that perspective. But either way he did everything he could for Go in this one, Shiozaki hasn't put it all together yet but still shows a lot of fire.- 1 reply

Hidaka would have to absolutely tank all rounds of viewing I'll do for him to not finish decently on my ballot. One of my top 5 favorite Japanese juniors and excels in a variety of settings. It pains me to not have contributed to this post already but I'll make a point to start on him soon.

I really like this match between her and Estela Molina. Pantera Surena VS Estela Molina - Houston 8/22/1980 I like Molina a good amount in what I've seen of her but Surena is the highlight of the veteran/upstart dynamic for me in this one. I love the feud with Jaguar but haven't seen the Gonzalez match. I'm excited to watch it and to see even this much discussion about Pantera, the absence of North American women's wrestlers I'm considering is glaring on my list and I want to start working on that.

One of the things that's refreshing watching Piper feud with Rose in 1980 is how real of a threat he makes Buddy and his camp feel. Then I watch some of him feuding with Rude in 1989 and it feels like the opposite, that Rude is an annoying inconvenience that he's been tasked with getting some laughs at the expense of. Which version do people think is more representative of babyface Piper? I know he didn't age gracefully but as noted in previous posts it's also not like he was incapable of having great matches and making his opponents look good in the process into the 90s. I love Piper and on my first round of GWE viewing he did very well but I did leave off asking myself this question.

[1980-09-13-Portland] Buddy Rose vs Roddy Piper (2/3 falls)
Clayton Jones replied to Loss's topic in September 1980
What a great piece of business this is. One of the best babyfaces in the world at the time and one of the best heels squaring off with natural chemistry, a red hot crowd, and real stakes being built. Every little bit of Piper's body language and facial expressions communicate that this is deadly serious, which adds a lot considering Rose is obviously not the most physically intimidating. On the flip side Buddy is a heat machine, every motion, ever mannerism, the multiple shirts, the promos, it's all so glorious. He really lays it in when he's on offense and the blood elevates this a step even higher. For what amounts to not quite 10 minutes of wrestling this feels like much, much more.- 4 replies

Awesome piece of footage. Charles is electric every time he gets involved, he always impresses me with how he makes the most of every opportunity. I'd be lying if I said I understood what was happening with the match as a whole but I did really enjoy getting a glimpse of a young(er) Emilio working that crowd into a frenzy.
