Really feels like the most grudge match type Memphis hate match I can think of in Japan. Love seeing the blood as well.- 28 replies

Another fine episode Kelly and gang. Good primer for Japanese wrestling that I can use as a cliff notes reference point and I think would be very informative for anyone who is a US fan wanting to integrate into Japanese wrestling. I loved your choice on Funk vs. Hansen to show. I was less sure on 6/3/94 even though that is the "intro" match for many but I was glad to see that Moss really enjoyed it and picked up on the major themes of the match. Chamber of Horrors breakdown sound sickly entertaining.

This strangely enough has became my most watched match of 2013 as I have seen this match 4 times. I feel kind of foolish because I like it a little less each time. It has went from one of my favorite joshi matches and a MOTYC to a real good match. The sloppiness seems to get amplified with each re watch and the story intensity declines. Still think the haircut is a chilling moment.

Really gritty match. I thought Fuji performance was a tad better on second watch but Vader still does so well here in toeing the line between being a monster and vulnerable vs. a big star.

I enjoyed this as a spectacle still and it is crazy Funk at his finest but also at his worst. The three piledriver no sell spot really annoyed me here and I didn't have a problem with him putting his foot on the rope to break the pin because it seemed natural with his staggered selling but there he was choking Lawler 20 seconds later. Good spectacle match but whereas on first watch I had this right behind Gilbert/Jarrett, I now have Gilbert/Jarrett firmly ahead of this match.

[1991-01-05-USWA Texas] Jeff Jarrett vs Eddie Gilbert
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1991
This match is just a pleasure to watch. I don't know where it will rank on my overall list for 1991 but it will probably wind up being one of the most fun matches of the year.- 17 replies

I would absolutely say Satanico not being in WCW is a good thing. I would lump Dandy, Parka, and Silver King as the "remember when wcw had 20 luchadors" victims. While the other two are good/great workers, obviously Dandy is the one who suffers the most because of how great he really is all joking aside. I think the Japanese counterpart might be Tenryu as lately he has kind of gotten some jokes for his WM 7 and Clash appearances with the Regis interview being tossed around.
-
It is really sad that this is what Dandy has been resorted to. He was always in the wrong environment to really catch on or gain notoriety for US fans and sadly it seems like more and more of hardcore wrestling fans have little patience to go back to 1990 and watch a lucha match even though it was my 1990 MOTY and blows away something like Hogan vs. Warrior when looking at the two matches objectively.

Good tag team action on this set of matches but it really does feel like we are in the doldrums of AWA now. Wahoo McDaniel vs. Curt Hennig (12/27/87) - My favorite match between these two. Curt was bumping like crazy and the work he did on top was very good. Original Midnight Express vs. Midnight Rockers (12/27/87) - OMX between this run and their NWA stuff are not far behind Rose/Somers on my short tag team list. This was really good tag work with fun schtick and good balance of working on top and behind for the Rockers. Adrian Adonis & Bob Orton Jr. vs. Midnight Rockers (January 1988) - Holy crap a great match that I didn't expect from the huge as shit Adonis. Bob was also kingsized in this. Top 25. Badd Company vs. Midnight Rockers (2/19/88) - Disappointing match. Disjointed and to short to be anything special. Jerry Lawler vs. Curt Hennig (2/19/88) - Felt like this was setting up to be a great match then ended. disappointing finish but still around 75 overall. Wahoo McDaniel vs. Curt Hennig (3/19/88) - Ending of their feud. I have all of their matches besides 12/27 kind of lumped together. Again, while I did enjoy the feud I do think Curt could have been utilized better against someone else. The Nasty Boys vs. Rock n Roll Express (4/16/88) - Good sloppy fun but a little short. nasties offense looked well nasty. Jerry Lawler & Greg Gagne vs. Riki Choshu & Mr. Saito (5/14/88) - Choshu in AWA in 1988 brings a smile to my face. Lawler vs. Choshu singles would have been nice. Good mid range match.

I liked this show as we got some thoughts from the panel on some unique people. Onto my thoughts. Nick Bockwinkel vs. Larry Zbyszko (7/11/87) - I cant get enough of this feud and this is the best match. I may be bumping the fav five thread in the pro wrestling folder on Larry Z because I am loving his stuff on this set. Curt Hennig vs. DJ Petersen (8/29/87) - Fun heel Curt vs. Lower opponent. I thought Peterson was pretty bad here but overall this is an enjoyable match that will end up around 100-125 on my ballot Wahoo McDaniel vs. Boris Zuhkov (Russian Chain Match) (8/29/87) - Ok match but I have kind of had enough of Boris. it was fun seeing him at first as some long Bolshevik matches but his matches have failed to captivate me and this match can't be blamed on following a great match before it. Wahoo McDaniel vs. Curt Hennig (9/12/87) - Good starter piece to their feud. Wahoo is looking pretty rugged by this point. Curt Hennig vs. Mitch Snow (10/30/87) - I liked this better than the Peterson match and think the panel undersold the amateur wrestling spot with verne squealing like a baby. Bill Dundee & Jerry Lawler vs. Original Midnight Express (10/30/87) - Maybe the funniest match on the set. Sitting right outside of my top 10 and the definition of an effective tag. Lawler laughing at Rose was so amazing. Wahoo McDaniel vs. Curt Hennig (Indian Strap Match) (11/28/87) - Good iteration of this feud but the main event scene with heel curt does feel pretty limited. Midnight Rockers vs. Kevin Kelly & Nick Kiniski (12/27/87) - Was not a big fan of this and the shine sequence went on too long. Bottom 20.

I liked this more on a second watch especially the first 20 minutes. I wish they could have created a cohesive finish around that time as the last 10 minutes meandered and felt rehashed but for two relatively young women going out there to fill 30 minutes, they did an admirable job here.

I may be a little lower on this with a second watch. I still thought it was very good but the slowing of the pace and triumph of Hokuto coming back didn't resonate quite as much with me this time. Still very good though but now a slow behind Estrada/Fiera for me.

[1991-01-02-AJPW-New Year Giant Series] Stan Hansen vs Kenta Kobashi

My thoughts remained the same here. Condensed version but they actually did a decent amount of mat work and limb control given the time allotted and the feud felt like it was progressed.- 17 replies

Im pulling a Loss and rewatching the start of the set now that I am done with AWA. This one remained great. The opening takes a while to get going but once they do, the spots with the chain and into the crowd were crazy and hectic. I do think I give the finish more of a pass than some others as the main thing I am most bothered by is the fastness of the count by the ref.

Thanks Brain and Shoe. I do think that while our last two shows have been 2 of our longest, the discussion remained relevant and sustainable throughout.

Thought I might have some backlash on my Summerslam 89 comments. I think its a show where overall Im lower than a lot in regards to it.
-
I wouldn't call it a great match per say but Cornette vs. Heyman from GAB 89 is about the best possible match they could have had together given the gimmick and abilities of the competitors.
-
Thats what I get for looking at the review on my phone while doing the show.
-
I would sign off to the bolded statement. An emotional connection to the performers independently of the structure has to be there for the crowd heat to be optimum. Some matches may have an advantage to gain a bigger crowd reaction (The opener), but overall the audience still has to care about who is out there to react.
-
I always go back and forth between this match and Rodman vs. Savage fighting in a porta potty at a bike rally being the most "WCW" match in history.

I do think it would be interesting to see when they decided to scrap the 8 man match and where it would have been placed. I see it being between Taker vs. Punk and HhH vs. Brock which would have helped things at WM 29. I can't decide which match structure I prefer as it honestly may be something like Halloween Havoc 1990.
