  1. In the end, I agree, and that's why I keep listening. I love the eras they're discussing. I am learning stuff. And sometimes they make me laugh. I'll put up with some annoyance now and then, as long as I have this thread to vent into. I am part way into the Sunny episode. I had half-considered buying her book. But the passages Conrad is reading aloud have put me right off of the purchase.
  2. Yup, any time I see their names on a match, I know I am at least going to enjoy what they do.
  3. Niiiiiice. I have some 1983 Mid-South (and other NWA footage) acquired online, and it's really poor VQ. I can't wait to watch this good stuff - I sampled the oldest ep they had the other day - 1981, I think - and it was gorgeous video. Next, please: Georgia and Mid-Atlantic. They used to put that stuff on the 24/7 TV channel. ETA: Just counted. 51 eps of Mid-South online at this moment.
  4. Maybe Sonny Ohno was friends with Hokuto? Didn't he manage her in WCW in '97? Speaking of AH: I didn't realize she was still working in 2000. This match is a clusterfuck of epic proportions. The only thing I really liked was the way everybody went after Aja Kong at the beginning since they know she's seriously dangerous.
  5. I was just today commenting on a March 2000 Arsion match, saying I wish it'd had more of the grappling that I was expecting. Now I begin to understand from everyone's comments here that by that year things had changed. Oh well, good to know.
  6. I thought you guys were overstating his obsession with how much the workers get paid. I thought wrong.
  7. In a match filled with great personalities, cool highspots, some intense matchups, and brawling before and outside of the match, the coolest part is Ultimo coming in and kicking ass afterwards. Because Memphis, baby! Dragon Kid took a serious beating, too.
  8. I thought we were just adding matches now that the yearbooks are over. But that makes sense. Maybe LOSS can move it.
  9. They say there's nothing funny about a clown after midnight. I think they should also say the same thing about a ring filled with clowns before a bloody brawl begins. That was wackiness. Too bad when they left, they took Oscar's cute valet with them. She looked wonderful in her little matador costume. You were not kidding about how fast the first two Falls occurred. The rest of the match had some cool moments but also felt a bit messy. I liked the cheating referee at first, but in the end I begin to wonder what the endgame was since he clearly wasn't going to rule against Apache. Except then he does, when faced with that wicked awesome submission hold. I guess at that point he had no choice. Crazy blood from both guys, especially Apache. This match was pretty good times, but I like the previous match better.
  10. Yep, this was pretty well awesome. The wet mat made them look like they were wrestling on ice. That makes things a little sloppy at times, but it also forces them to keep things on a more brawling level. Speaking of ice, I especially liked one bit where Apache gets whipped off the rope and goes sliding across the mat like a hockey puck. I agree with the comments about the double blood upping the intensity - is it possible that Apache got cut open hardway when he took that chair shot? I'm not waiting: Watching the hair match next.
  11. I had a very opposite response to this match, compared to you guys. I don't care for it much. I felt like they weren't working a match so much as taking turns setting up cool spots. There's no feeling of intensity or competition. It's more like an exhibition. Also, I was a little disappointed that we didn't get much matwork, since that's the whole point of this promotion. But that is what it is. All that said, I really liked a few of the moments, and I think both workers are very good from what I've seen elsewhere. Despite my comment regarding low-intensity, there was a really nasty drop kick off of the top turnbuckle that I'm shocked didn't result in a bloody nose. That was really well done. I also dug the reversal that Mary did to get out of a full guard and into a rear choke. That's the kind of grappling that I would like to have seen more from this match, instead of just a bunch of high-flying moves that mean nothing. And maybe the fact that it was so heavily clipped is what makes it feel like a highlight-reel (instead of a match with a beginning and an end and it flow). So that may not be their fault.

  13. Great, great crowd. But then, you expect that from World Class, especially in 1984. This was the summer before I went into 5th grade in Dallas. While I remember very few specifics, I can tell you that the Von Erichs - especially Kerry - were cool, cool, cool. We loved them - all of Dallas/Ft Worth did. So it's a huge moment for Kerry to win. Two of my favorite moments from this match: 1. The high-speed matwork that opens the match. It's short, but it's an exciting way to open up. 2. Kerry's shuckin' and jivin' when he gets a sequence of punches on Flair. It's moments like that one which pop a stadium crowd and made the VE boys so popular.
  14. Kerry's WWF debut match. They definitely refer to him as "Kerry Von Erich", though Vince does say, "They call him the Texas Tornado." Match doesn't even go 4 minutes. Buddy gets a bit of offense and even teases coming off the top rope, but it's basically a squash. Buddy sells and bumps well, and the crowd is loving Kerry. Jesse and Vince spend half the match talking about how fat Buddy Rose is, calling him walrus and other names.
  15. I have listened to a bunch of eps now. Conrad is annoying as all get out. He's like a live action forum thread where one of the guys is really snarky and easily enraged.
  16. ESPN 30 for 30: This is the XFL I somehow missed all of this in 2001. I was deep in a phase of being too smart and adult for Wrestling. So I probably blocked it out.
  17. Just started listening to this podcast. Finished ep 1 - Dusty in the WWF. The story with the cops and "2nd Most Recognizable Athlete in the World" about had me falling out of my chair laughing. Bruce's Dusty impression is great.
  18. CWF's youtube page is great, with sections for various wrestlers (with lots of matches) and for complete house shows, as well as the weekly tv. Someone has put good thought into this.
  19. Last night, I watched the most recent weekly youtube tv from CWF. It was my first show, and I really enjoyed it. From the look of the studio - including the flags! - to the southern accents on everyone to the great wrestler names to the girl doing the ad for the upcoming show, the whole thing felt very old school with a modern twist. (I dug the Carnies faction promo, too. Creepy!) The main action was the big 6-man elimination match, and it was filled with great fun and drama. I thought there was a lot of Japan influence, interestingly, especially in the kick and forearm exchange segment with Trevor v Chip. But aside from the nasty head-drop, which wisely ended the match, I didn't see a lot of modern indie flippy. They used all 6 guys well, and I could tell their various histories played a part. That's good commentary and match layout. I wasn't crazy about Trevor Lee saying after the match that he does this to impress the crowds. (I can well imagine how Cornette would respond to such a promo.) But otherwise, the closing segment was great, with the heel beatdown and insulting beer drinking. I think one of them should have dumped beer onto Lee instead of just putting the bottle next to him. But maybe they were trying to keep the ring clean for more tv taping matches?
  20. This is actually 1972 Tennessee, I think, before Southeastern. But I'll just leave it here anyway.
  21. Have you guys considered also loading onto Youtube? I know there's some P2B stuff on there, but nothing recent. Doesn't have to be video. Audio is fine. That goes for any of the other feeds around here, too.
  22. Watching Bret Hart's final match vs Kevin Nash in January 2000, it occurs to me that Nash actually seems to care when he's in the ring with Bret. Is it possible that Bret is one of the few wrestlers that know-it-all Nash actually respected? They put on probably Diesel's best matches, too. Has Nash ever discussed this question in his many shoot interviews?
  23. Solid match, with Bret working hard and Nash actually looking like he gives a damn. Of course, it has to be ruined by the usual cluster of craziness to support whatever wacky storyline is going on at the time. Bret was supposed to wrestle Sid at the pay-per-view in a few days, but he couldn't do it medically? That's why we get Benoit and that weird title change? I find it interesting that the WWF things I've been viewing from the same month are a lot easier to follow and pick up the emotions on. You get a sense of who the good and bad guys are, and you don't need a program, as it were.
  24. I wouldn't always defend their choice of what to like, but the "twitter" fans do love to watch rasslin. I quite enjoy their excitement and find it rubs off. Example: I have recently been listening to a lot of the WhatCulture WWE lists on youtube - Top 10 Promos, Top 10 Matches, etc. Most of the guys on there fill their top 10 lists with things that more serious fans might not necessarily consider GOAT. But their enthusiasm for what they like is catchy, as is the discussion on youtube below the video. (when people aren't trolling, that is) It reminds me of Classic Doctor Who vs NuWho fans. The NuWho fans, who may or may not care for classic DW, are just as passionate about post-2005 product as the "twitter" fans are about what current wrestling they enjoy. There's a lot of conflict online between them and the Classic-Who-Is-Best fans, most of whom grew up with the older product. Sometimes, we take things so seriously with analyzing matches, etc that we forget Rasslin Is Fun.
