  1. I hadn't been on the net that long at that point (maybe 4 months or so) but I remember it being reported that Luger was going to win the title on Nitro and lose it back to Hogan the following Saturday at Road Wild. And that's exactly what happened. Luger was so over and that hurt him. Fall 97 was a strange period for WCW as all of a sudden Hogan was all over TV after being used as a feature side attraction (once in awhile on TV) for the past year. All those terrible Hogan and Bischoff promos from this time period did a lot to kill the product. Turner execs wanted more Hogan on TV though but then around this time they decided to give the midcard workers tons of time for their matches. Plus all the midcard titles started being defended on TV all the time after most were forgotten about the previous year. I believe this was at the request of Terry Taylor
  2. Yeah there was that period in late 2000 with him working a side program with Austin and then getting involved in the McMahon family hijinx in early 01. Then he's back in the midcard feuding for the IC title. Then during the Eugene stuff in 04 he gets over as a face and is squashed by Hunter. Then starts doing tags. those are the two periods where he was hovering around the top of the card or at least interacting with the top workers and personalities oh and then there was the proposed Foley/Regal feud during the Invasion that Foley nixed (and left the company for a year and a half)
  3. Never heard this one before although Bobby did seem pissed about Goldberg losing in his 2001 shoot.
  4. this is the time of the year where WWE tends to get pretty damn good. Mania season is here
  5. I know I'm in the minority, hell maybe the only one, but I like AJ more now than during the Punk/Bryan/Kane stuff so I'm pysched for a potential pairing with Dolph
  6. It was a take on the crooked evangelist scandals from the 80s (Swaggart, Bakker). They tended to sweat and get red faced while preaching/crying which was why Prichard wore the embellished red makeup. Plus the color fit in with the love/heart theme. Even if you hated it you have to admit Prichard really commited to the gimmick. Folllowing the 90 year book it's pretty remarkable how much air time he had at that time. He was probably featured too much. Obviously Vince fell in love with the gimmick
  7. Even with Hogan out Vince was able to make money with those damn bracelets. From what I recall they actually really did sell a whole bunch of them. This was an effective segment that the core WWF audience really bought into
  8. This sounds INSANE. It's sad how desperate WCW was for any mainstream coverage at all. That they would be willing to have this filmed. Wow
  9. I remember this angle from the ESPN days. From how out of whack the time lapses were I have no idea when it aired
  10. Googling "Boxcar Willie" I don't see how Gorilla thought Valentine beared any resemblance to him but hey it sounded kinda clever. Greg looked like he wanted to kill himself during this time. According to Honky Rick Rude came up with the Rythm and Blues name
  11. One thing I hated about WCW during this time was that the PPVs were forgotten about the next night on Nitro. They never really made a big deal about the finishes and everything went back to status quo. That trend is still continuing in today's WWE. That was Bischoff's tv executive mo shining through
  12. Nearly seven years later they re-used a lot of the stuff they did for Hogan/Warrior for Shawn/Sid. IE saving each other ,accidental hitting spots, arguments. Camp Cornette played the roles of Bravo (yuck) and Earthquake. As Loss has mentioned in numerous threads for this yearbook Hogan was really unbearable at this point. For me personally this is the point where I started rooting against him. So yeah it took me to age 10 to finally turn on him. Others probably bailed earlier or never liked him to begin with
  13. very sad news. RIP isn't Brad's wife a high ranking executive at HBO?

Just a few thoughts As far as post attitude era stuff I think Raw was much worse in 02/03 than it is now. Not even close IMO. I remember starting a thread in 07 questioning whether the company was in for another boom because they were doing great business and the product seemed hot. I think it was right before Benoit happened. I did get the sense in late 06 early 07 that they were turning things around (at least business wise). Mania was huge that year with the Trump angle that everyone hated. Whether it was a missed opportunity or if it was curtailed by the tragedy is up for debate I guess
  15. Jeff Blatnick died. He's actually from my neck of the woods in upstate NY/capital region. They named a park and little league stadium after him. From what I remember as a kid he hated pro wrestling with a passion and would start fuming if asked about it in interviews. It just so happens his rise to fame correlated with the boom period of the WWF so he was asked for his opinions on the business all the time. I can remember not really liking him as a kid because he bad mouthed wrestling
  16. Scoot still seems to be fixated on the "Scott Steiner was going to get the Jesus push from 91-94" tagline. I've never heard anyone confirm that and Scott seems convinced that Steiner would have been the next huge singles star which from the perspective of a fan during that time period is certainly questionable
  17. As an aside Vince doing commentary for that show and speaking to the audience as if they had never seen wrestling before was so so strange. I can remember people online being outraged over that. I know they were trying to hook casuals/first timers but it came off so poorly and patronizing
  18. Aces and .8's killed me. I may have to rethink Dave's sense of humor
  19. he was pretty good with the Vickie stuff and I liked a lot of E & C but he might be a worse actor than Norm MacDonald
  20. the crowd was on fire for the main event stuff. That's the loudest crowd I've heard on a RAW maybe since the boom period. Ryback was insanely over. I loved the match
  21. Vince is on a rampage after last week's rating. He also threatened all the production team that if he doesn't see results they'll all be fired. Gewirtz cannot be outright fired per his contract. He'd have to be bought out. Things are getting interesting. A real WCW vibe . also on RAW Punk seemed to have punched out a fan while escaping through the crowd. Right in front of Vince
  22. During the same time frame Rod Trongard was much much worse than Gorilla. Gorilla might have had some obvious flaws but Trongard could not grasp the simplest forms of wrestling psychology. He was inept in every way
  23. at the very least they would have known that there could have been a game 7 of a World Series on that date regardless of the teams. Still risky
  24. Something I didn't realize until just now. WCW scheduled Halloween Havoc 91 against game 7 of the World Series between the Braves and Twins (one of the most dramatic highly rated series of all time). To top that Ted Turner owned the Braves. Oh WCW
  25. Yeah I remember them losing Coca Cola as a sponsor in 1999 . The company was devastated and even sent out a press release saying things would change and that advertisers would be proud to associated with WWF or something like that.
