Resident Evil
Any list of WWF matches has to include Warrior/Savage from WM VII.Definitely. This is one of my fav matches of all time from anywhere. The emotion for me is unbelievably high in this one. For the WWF's matches you should see before you die here is just a partial list from me I'd have to give a nod to Angle/Benoit vs Edge/Rey from No Mercy 2002 which is seen by the masses as the best WWF/WWE tag in history. Scary thing is they could've even topped it especially if the WWE was a little less restrictive. Hogan vs Andre Wrestlemania III Steamboat vs Macho Man Maple Leaf Gardens Bret vs DK Bret vs Mr. Perfect King of the Ring Bret vs Yokozuna MSG Cage Match Bret vs Owen Wrestlemania X Bret vs Austin Wrestlemania 13 Bret vs 123 Kid Longer Version Monday Night Raw Eddie vs Bradshaw The too much blood match and Smackdown Cage Eddie vs Benoit Smackdown their last match Tito vs Mr. Perfect WWF SNME Hart Foundation vs Demoliton 2/3 Falls Summerslam 90 Ultimate Warrior vs Ravishing Rick Rude Sumerslam 89 Bret vs Diesil almost the complete series Angle vs Austin Unforgiven? 2001 A ton of Benoit matches though people may have trouble watching them due to the brain damage Hogan vs Rock Wrestlemania And a ton more. Dylan Waco
I don't think it's the brain damage that makes people wince while watching Benoit matches.

smkelly
I have matches starting from 80 to this year. Practically every major match, although, I hadn't remembered the I Quit cage match. There are other omissions from faulty memory, but 310 matches with a few angles is a heck of a desert island and/or introduction to just about every style/promotion/significant worker there is. Singles, tag, six-man, eight-man, ten-man, ladder, hardcore, lucha, puro, territories, and much, much more. EDIT: At any rate, agree or disagree, I think this might be an interesting list to keep in consideration. Not mine, no, but an overall "desert island" kind of list. Since the GOAT has failed to get off the ground (again), maybe we could concentrate on a project of this magnitude? Obviously, I have no problem compiling a list of 310 matches/angles in an hour. Copy and paste, man, copy and paste. I would just need help with dates, suggestions, omissions, stuff of that nature.
Al
My ideal list would number about 100 or so. I think each match needs something compelling behind it beyond the match. Something like Muraco/Snuka, a mediocre match that exploded into myth, that might make the cut. I definitely agree with Hokuto/Kandori having watched that match now. Andre/Wepner, that would merit consideration if someone actually had a copy.
Loss
For FMW death matches, I'd either go with Funk/Onita from 5/5/93, which is a ridiculous spectacle that feels more Quentin Tarantino than pro wrestling, or Megumi Kudo vs Combat Toyoda from 5/5/96, which for my money is one of the greatest matches of all time. El-P
or Megumi Kudo vs Combat Toyoda from 5/5/96, which for my money is one of the greatest matches of all time. I actually just rewatched this for the first time in like ten years, and it's without a doubt a top 10 match I've ever seen. Just amazing. And I had forgotten about *the* bump, both masterfully built and absolutely insane. And everything is perfect, the match and the production (well minus that explosion which doesn't happen, but is covered masterfully by Kudo), the intros, the post-match with Onita, just everything. A masterpiece if there's one.
smkelly
Agreed on the above match. I watched it on one of the Phil Schneider compilations. The rewind spots are incredible. Hate though to see what a feminist would say about the match. But that might be interesting nonetheless. And still no comment on my huge list or idea? What's up with that? Al
You could definitely make it into a project. You'd need to clarify a couple of things as a group. Basically, how big you want the list to be, and what constitutes inclusion onto the list. (i.e. 75% agree, something like that). As far as your own list of 310. Definitely good stuff on the list. A lot of stuff I haven't seen. There are some matches that don't stand out for me. Adonis/Murdoch vs Inoki/Fujinami for example. Fine match from a wrestling standpoint. But what elevates it into a must-see match? Just being a great match doesn't cut it for me, unless it's the very cream of the crop. That is, a match that on its own merits qualifies as a contender for top 10, ever. Otherwise it has to have something interesting in the background about it. At least in my opinion. A lot of stuff I haven't seen. Thanks for the compliment. I think if anything, having a cap size wouldn't necessarily be a thing to include. Why not have a list 1,000 matches strong? I mean, Will and other people are routinely unearthing new footage. Like that one French match from the latest PS compilation (Gilbert Cesca vs. Billy Catanzarro (France 1960s)). Unless that has been common place unbeknownst to me, it is some new and awesome match for our viewing pleasure. Nevertheless, I understand the drawback of not having some sort of cap size. We could easily fill it up with "normal" matches, which would defeat its purpose. So at any rate, if people are interested in such an endeavor, shall the discussions begin? My tentative plan would be something like a list per promotion, where discussion/voting/ideas could be hashed out, and once something has received X amount of approval, the approved matches are consolidated onto the "master" list. Or something to that effort. There are some matches that don't stand out for me. Adonis/Murdoch vs Inoki/Fujinami for example. Fine match from a wrestling standpoint. At least in my opinion. Some posts from the past: Adonis & Murdoch vs. Inoki & Fujinami 12/5/1984 - One of the greatest tag team matches I have ever seen. Murdoch and Adonis are text book heels in this match, and work so well together, and they isolate Fujinami for nearly ten minutes before Inoki gets the hot tag. That whole period, by far, was the best FIP I've ever seen. This match is definitely worth going out of your way to watch, buy, download, or however you get your wrestling fix. If I was to rate this out of snowflakes, it gets the full monty *****. EDIT: I removed the links, I was unaware of them not being allowed. I re-watched the 12/5/1984 WWF vs. NJPW match today. It's even better watching it now since I've been watching so much AJPW and NJPW lately. By far, the greatest tag team match I've ever seen NJPW pump out in the 80's, and the greatest heavyweight tag in NJPW's history. Simply phenominal. Its been nearly two years since my initial viewing of this match. It's still my favorite NJ heavyweight tag of the 80's, and I still think it's the best of all of their heavyweight tags, even over the 11/90 match. Just great, great wrestling. Agreed on the 84 tag final. I had not come across much hype for the match when I first watched it, so I was completely blown away. I actually went back and watched the match again immediately afterward, which is something I never have the patience to do. If I had to use a personal pick for its inclusion, I would. Easily one of my favorite matches ever. This is where the voting process would work best. I find it worthy, whereas you don't. Some may agree with you, which would be disagreeing with me. I'm okay with that. I hope the same would be kosher with you. Subjectivity is subjectivity, man
jdw
I honestly cannot think of a single match that is on tape. I assume you are also asking of stuff that isn't taped? If yes, then probably one of the Holy Grail Ric Flair matches, like his July '82 match against Backlund. I have always felt there would be real moments of hate, stiffness, and overall dickheadness from both guys. They worked before at least once in Toronto several years before. I suspect they got along fine. Bob and Harley got along fine in their MSG match. Whether it was any good... who knows. Bob typically tended to work Bob matches, while Ric would work Ric matches. The might make it a little disjointed at times, but probably not. Ric was more than willing to bitch out, and if one looks at the Harley-Bob match, Bob dominates it even though Harley had a fair amount of stuff left in the holster that he could have done to fill space if he'd been on top more. Suspect Bob would have done a lot of controlling with something like the headlock and ground headlock. Ric would have cheated to be on top, and bitch out to go back on the defense. smkelly
Actually, John, that is exactly why I think it wouldn't work. Harley is Harley, man. A man's man. Ric was not a man's man, man. Bob was a dorky looking guy, but holy shit, he had mongoloid strength. Plus, as you pretty much defined, Bob was only truly willing to work his particular style of a match. But Backlund realizes with Race, that if he pulls anything on Race, things would get ugly, and Bob is probably smart enough to also realize that Race would likely hurt Bob very badly if it turned ugly. What does Bob do? He let's Harley FUCKING Race get in on the action, man. But Ric Flair? That bleached head, dick nose, weird teeth, and an arrogant motherfucker to boot, his ass is getting broken off by Bob MOTHERFUCKING Backlund. That is my Holy Grail match, man. Don't be hating on it. By the way, what did I do to deserve that?
jdw
By the way, what did I do to deserve that? Deserve what? Is that in reference to anything I wrote? I thoughy my post was just describing what Flair-Bob would have been, and didn't take any shots. Bob vs Harley wasn't terribly different from what you'd see in any number of Bob or Harley matches. Perhaps a bit more face dominating than you'd see in some of Harley matches, but that came across as touring NWA champ coming into MSG to make the local hero look strong. Seriously, the complaint about the match is that Bob dominated it far too much, which kind of hurts the "Bob let Harley get in on the action" concept you're trying to get across. That said, there weren't any "liberties" that Bob failed to take against Harley that you seem to think he took against other wrestlers. Pretty typical Bob performance, and it's not like he took liberties against any of his opponents like say Billy did against Inoki. I think that if folks watch Bob-Harley from MSG, they probably could imagine Ric in a nearly exact match *more* than they can see Harley doing it. Really, it's closer to a Flair Match than a Harley Match. That's probably why some are disappointed: they expected/hoped Harley could get to flash more, while there isn't any surprise in Flair constantly getting bitched out by Kerry / Sting / Dusty / Face X. Al
How about the 1950s-60s. Are there matches existing on video that are historically significant? Perhaps Rogers-O'Connor and Rikidozan-Blassie.
Loss
I like the Thesz/Rikidozan from JWA. There are two matches in October 1957. The first one is the better one, I think. Destroyer/Baba and Dory/Inoki from '69, also JWA, are awesome and very good, respectively. I also like Antonio Inoki/Chris Markoff as a cool match to see a young Inoki on the rise against a game American heel. I believe Caddock/Stetcher from 1/30/20 is the oldest footage that exists on tape, although I've heard whatever clip is in the WWE TV opening is from 1901. There's also a Londos/Nagurski match from '38 that I've heard people say good things about.
Bob Morris
Just tossing out a few from the top of my head: 1. Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat, two-of-three-falls, Clash of the Champions: I think that's the match that has to be a must-see to get the idea of how well Flair and Steamboat worked together. 2. Lex Luger vs Ricky Steamboat, GAB '89, U.S. title match: I loved how they played up the angle of Luger getting the no-DQ stip waived, then doing everything he could to piss Ricky off to the point Ricky says "the hell with this" and nails him with the chair to satisfy his thirst for revenge. 3. Ultimate Warrior vs. Randy Savage, WM VII: Agreed with what was said earlier... the whole story of Savage getting desperate to finish off Warrior but can't do it, then Warrior going for his big finish, Savage kicking out and Warrior wondering if it was really over for him, until Savage comes back and Warrior fights him off until Savage can't go on. And the post-match angle is tremendous. 4. Bret Hart vs. Mr. Perfect, KOTR '93: Between this match and the SummerSlam match, this one is far better. I love how Perfect does just enough to keep the fans sympathetic toward Bret while not outright turning heel. 5. Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin, WM 13: This is the match that made it clear that Austin was destined for big things in WWF and also showed how you can properly execute a double turn in a match. 6. Ric Flair vs. Terry Funk, GAB '89: A far more intense brawl than the I Quit match was and I just love the post-match stuff. It got the ball rolling on what would become Flair vs. Sting and I loved how the heels kept trying to come back, but the faces will not be denied and the heels ultimately decide it's best to retreat and fight another day. 7. Hulk Hogan vs Roddy Piper, The War to Settle the Score: Not their best match but this was all about the angle. It's amazing to watch the fans pop like nuts when Mr. T finally interjects himself. 8. Ricky Steamboat vs. Rick Rude, Beach Blast '92: Seconded on this one... it's a vastly underrated match and I loved how both wrestlers built to Steamboat taking the late lead and Rude desperately trying to tie it up before time expired. 9. Ten-man tag from WWF In Your House, Calgary Stampede: This is one of those matches you just have to see for the crowd reaction. The Canadians are rabid for the Hart Foundation and are booing Steve Austin out of the building. You can tell Austin was having a blast playing the dastardly heel. 10. Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon, ladder match, WMX: I know there are those who favor the SummerSlam match but, every time I watch this match, I still think of it as the measuring stick by which other ladder matches are compared to. I believe they did a good job of throwing in highspots while keeping the focus on the chase to get the belts, rather than making it all about the highspots as so many ladder matches have turned into. Harts/Neidhart/Bulldog/Pillman v Austin/LOD/Goldust/Shamrock 53. Road Warriors v Midnight Express (Starrcade '86) Hokuto/Kandori absolutely a great match. I read the thread in the 1993 Yearbook folder. The youtube link I watched translated Hokuto's speech near the beginning of the match. The heat by the two is done so well that you don't even need the backstory. You're hooked.
JerryvonKramer
Al two things interest me there: 1. I've never seen anyone rate Hogan vs. Iron Sheik that highly.
