Loss
Excellent match! I wasn't sure what to expect here since it's the WCWSN match that people talk about. But this was really good. Starts off with some comedy before getting more aggressive. The crowd loses interest a few times, but screw them. Regal threw some nasty shots. Great finish. Kevin Ridge
Impressed by Larry Z here. Philly crowd wasn't the most patient with the match. That wasn't necessary as was good match. Regal was throwing some great forearms and uppercuts throughout the match.
Exposer
This is another match I love. The first few minutes is Zbyszko outsmarting Regal a few times. My favorite part of the whole match is when Larry yells, "You ain't good enough!" at Regal. That pisses Regal off and the match is on! They trade really stiff blows for a lot of the time but that's what I like. Regal reverses a backslide into a crossbow which ruled. The finish was really great too. Awesome match. soup23
Quite the whose who in the crowd as we have both Vladimir and Hat Guy there. The crowd during this match was dreadful and really deferred from the match. To me this is the contrast to Steamboat/Flair from Spring Stampede crowd wise. Neither crowd was hot for the matwork, but the crowd here clearly looked uninterested and tried to get over chants and what not. It is a shame because the work is really good her and I love what I am seeing from Regal. Larry outsmarting him in the beginning, but they made Regal still look strong with a lot of vicious uppercuts and forearms. Finish was a bit abrupt but well executed. El-P
Really good match with Regal doing great manneurisms and facials at the start. Larry's "You're not good enough!" was gold. The crowd is typical ECW hostile crowd, chanting "Bruno !" at Larry, which was funny. Cool matwork and exchange, some intense shot exchanges, excellent upset finish. Larry could clearly still go and was a great foil for Regal, as their psychologies and wrestling style worked really well together.
Superstar Sleeze
Lord Steven Regal vs Larry Zbyszko - WCW Slamboree 1994 Wrote this originally in 2013 just rewatched in 2016 had totally forgotten this match. Yes, Regal's mannerisms bothered me again. Consistency! Very good match and I thought Larry Legend out-performed Regal in this one. Regal took a page out of Zbyszko's playbook with some Stall-O-Rama. His mannerisms irked me. I liked this being in the vein of the Slamboree being a legend's event but with the old guard taking on the new guard here. Zbyszko is such a prick, but to his credit he actually wrestles as a babyface pretty well. I enjoyed Zbyszko cheating on the ab stretch. Zbyszko showing up Regal at his own game with slick chain wrestling and that roundhouse karate kick was great. Somebody needs to integrate a rolling double wristlock into a short arms scissors into their standard moveset because that is too slick of a move not to be done more frequently. Zybszko trash talks Regal. Regal gets pissed in the corner. Regal's forearms were sick. I wasn't feeling his matwork save for his bitchin' modified bow and arrow/chinlock thingy. The best part of this whole match may have been Bobby Heenan continuing to tout the Bockwinkel party line that Verne Gagne's sleeper was a choke. I marked out so hard for that. (I did again in 2016!) Great finish with Dundee cracking Larry Z in the head with umbrella only for Zbyszko to back drop Regal into a pinning predicament. This is an excellent first match in a series that really sets the table for future matches. I feel like matches likes these are a lost art. Cant wait for the Saturday Night match. ***1/
goodhelmet
You guys summed it up pretty well. One of my favorite moments is during the ab stretch... while Larry is arguing with the ref, Regal takes the opportunity to grab the foot and set up Larry for the hiptoss pin. Exhibit 397 on why you have to pay attention to everything that Regal does. The finish was abrupt but sets up a great series of matches so no complaints. PeteF3
I could have watched these two go for hours. Zbyszko is now in the 1986 Bockwinkel role of the veteran babyface who still wrestles dirty and gives the heels their own medicine, and it's glorious. He and Regal are perfect for each other. Philly crowd was hostile but they did explode for the upset, so give 'em partial credit, I guess.
PhilTLL
Why the finish is extra great: they had spent several weeks building the butterfly suplex as a finisher-level move for Regal...including in matches Larry had personally called on TV, of course. Smart, very smart. Really excellent stuff overall here.
