kingliam Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 I had a search and couldn't find a topic like this already, but if I missed it, I'm sorry. Who are you favourite squash match workers? Doing the 1986 project has allowed me to see more squashes than I have in years, and Don Muraco is a guy who stands out. He had an offense that was diverse and interesting for the time, and just beasted jobbers. Ron Garvin is another one who just blasted through jobbers in an interesting way. Both Midnight and Rock and Roll Express wrestled interesting squashes - the Rock and Rolls especially, as the layout of their squash matches varied from match to match. Quote
pantherwagner Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 Manny Fernandez and Ron Garvin are my favourites from mid 80s Crockett. If I was a jobber my favourite would probably be Ivan Koloff. He always seemed to give them a lot of ring time. And of course early 90s WCW Sid when he'd destroy jobbers with the same style of moves that I'd "invent" while playing with Hasbro toys and then wonder why nobody in wrestling is using them. Quote
JerryvonKramer Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 Arn and Ole circa late 85 / early 86. Just awesome to see them destroy some jobber's leg. Ole likes to come off the top with a knee. How you been finding them liam? Quote
kingliam Posted January 23, 2016 Author Report Posted January 23, 2016 Arn and Ole circa late 85 / early 86. Just awesome to see them destroy some jobber's leg. Ole likes to come off the top with a knee. How you been finding them liam? I've not seen them together, as Ole is injured. Arn is great, but I mostly enjoyed Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard vs Don Kernoodle and Italian Stallion from my most recent post - just a really good little tag match which had Arn and Tully give a lot to the face team, before heeling it up enough to defeat them. Not a squash, but real good fun. The Ivan Koloff comment is a good shout, as he always gives his jobbers some offense and time to shine. Quote
Coffey Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 I'll second Sid. Him putting people on stretchers will never get old. Also gotta name-drop Goldberg. He pretty much got over by just squashing people. Up until that Steven Regal match, did any of his matches even go five minutes? You can look like a million bucks when you get to squash everyone, even if you're not a very good worker, and the whole match is just you getting your shit in. They protected the hell out of Goldberg, but it worked. In an era where due to the Monday Night Wars, there weren't any real jobbers anymore too. I don't think anyone would deny Goldberg's intensity either. I don't know how half of those people eating some of those Spears weren't legitimately injured. He was going THROUGH people. So sick. thebrainfollower Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 Koko B Ware. Heaven help you if you take a liberty with the Birdman Quote
ButchReedMark Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 Barbarian squashes were always super fun to watch, there's one against Bagwell from 92 which is possibly my favourite squash of all time. Just brutal. Quote
JerryvonKramer Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 Surprised no one has mentioned the Steiners yet. Quote
jcmmnx Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 Steiners were definitely one of my favorites. You just never knew what crazy shit they would bust out. The Great Muta became my favorite wrestler in 1989 just based off his squash matches. Just the way he moved around the ring and the explosiveness he had made him look like the best athlete on the planet. The S.S.T was also pretty awesome around that time. Quote
InYourCase Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 Koko B Ware. Heaven help you if you take a liberty with the Birdman I second this. Goldberg got really good at squashes, to a point where they some of them felt a little different. I'm a huge fan of his squash vs. Yuji Nagata. Way too much fun for a two minute match. Quote
thebrainfollower Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 There's a WWF squash from around 87 even more brutal with Ware than this. I would legit have refused to go up for the ghostbuster if I were that jobber. Was Koko a tough guy? I've seen him treat jobbers like this at least half a dozen times and wondering if anyone ever tried anything with him. Quote
Mr. Lacelle Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 Big Van Vader was a great squash match sports entertainer. He was just so ferocious . Quote

I would legit have refused to go up for the ghostbuster if I were that jobber. I'm curious. Do you have a link? I was watching the Memphis squash before seeing your comment and I thought exactly the same. The clothesline on that squash is brutal. Speaking of brutal squash matches, there's the Moondogs USWA run... Quote
WingedEagle Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 +1 for the Moondogs. Super, quick, violent squashes. Great call there. Quote
ButchReedMark Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 What's consensus on Kevin Sullivan squashes? Personally, I love them. His sheer viciousness more than makes up for his tiny stature. Quote
PeteF3 Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 The problem I have with Sullivan, at least '90s Sullivan, is that I recall all of his squashes being the same, as in move-for-move and sequence-for-sequence. Quote
JerryvonKramer Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 Did Rick McGraw ever work squashes as the guy doing the squashing? He was a nasty little fuck, but usually as the lower card guy getting beaten. I don't think I've ever seen a McGraw squash but I imagine he'd be brutal. Quote
Loss Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 I remember the Samoan Swat Team having some great squashes. Quote
JimArg Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 I'm not a squash fan but I really liked Goldberg. Quote
WingedEagle Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 Picking up with the Best of the Horsemen during the blizzard this afternoon, and its amazing how great the squashes here are. Every one of them has something fun to offer. Andersons destroying some poor bastard's arm, Flair shaking hands with Rocky King after disposing of him, etc. Just phenomenal. Quote
JerryvonKramer Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 Best set ever ever for that Quote
Timbo Slice Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 SST was definitely the best I saw. Goldberg was cool just because you got to see him evolve, too. Sid made me smile, too, because when he was a face, he was over as all hell. Quote
WingedEagle Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 Best set ever ever for that Its really true. If you cut the classics and just kept the squashes it'd still be a hell of a set. Quote
