Lucha Underground Season 2 debuts tonight.

I didn't find it racist, just an example of his willful ignorance and (yes) conservative views. For somebody who likes to consider himself a liberal progressive, he sure does sound like the Tea Party types I've encountered when it comes to social issues and, in terms of wrestling, is so conservative that he's made himself irrelevant.

Back to LU, I like how just when it seemed they were ignoring Vampiro's mental issues after the opening segment he went into the "Bubba Ray after powerbombing someone through a table" trance when Pentagon showed up. I guess they're going to do a split personality deal with Happy Announcer Ian and Dark Master Vampiro.

What an awesome debut show. I loved how it reintroduced all the major (and best) characters/workers and made them all look important. Phil and I are going to continue to write up the whole season, just like we did with season 1.

And man that Cornette rant is fucking terrible. The last chance for people to think wrestling isn't completely predetermined? Are wrestling folks' dicks really this tiny?

And as for the MMA in a real fight thing... Who has seen a real fight where some untrained guy tried to pull off an armbar or pull guard or some thing and got wrecked? Its hilarious. As for MMA/ catch moves in pro wrestling, if a wrestler can actually shoot or at least can present himself as a shooter it works. The rest of the time it just looks really sloppy to me.

I partially agree with this, but there's other guys who've never been portrayed as shooters and they pull this off really well. DBryan is one of the best I've seen incorporating real grappling skills into the wrestling world.

The Gracies for example did horribly the couple of times I saw them in New Japan.

Back to Lucha Underground, Jim Cornette seemed to be overly critical of it:

I love Cornette. He makes some good points. And Danielson would be somebody I would use as an example for what I'm talking about. He trains in Catch (and is supposedly really, really good), he wrestled in high school (and was really good) so when he does shooty MMA stuff it looks credible. When somebody without that sort of background does it, it just looks bad, ie somebody like the people on Lucha Underground.

Cornette's not really a conservative, at least not a self-identifying one. Like Watts I would call his social and political views... complex and at times contradictory? And I think he's more self-aware than people give him credit for, it's just that he happens to genuinely think he's correct about the state of modern wrestling when he's often wrong or narrow-minded. I've been enjoying his recent podcast appearances, actually.

Lucha Underground (1/27): To begin, I'll say that I've seen barely any English language LU and Vampiro's announcing is really terrible. Striker is almost endearing in comparison. King Cuerno vs. Fenix: Mediocre. Felt like a bunch of spots. Fenix hits some great dives though. Everything's well executed but utterly flavorless. Son of Havoc vs. Angelico vs. Ivelisse: I've been a real Ivelisse fan since Tough Enough, but this sucked. Match has been torn apart all week, but I wouldn't even say the gender angle is the issue as much as it's just a bad match where no one looked good. Angelico in particular continues his run of being the worst guy in great companies. First IWRG, then AAA when they had some fire, now Lucha Underground. Ivelisse vs. Mil Muertes: Just bad booking to have this happen right after the three-way. Build it for a week at least. It just felt like a dumb deal where they wanted to look progressive without actually doing anything progressive. On the contrary, this came off badly. Maybe it'll lead to something down the road, but this felt like a deal where the trigger should have been pulled later and more effectively. And to be fair, I thought the post-match angle was very good and well-produced in the hallmark LU ways.

Overall that write-up sounds more negative than it should. Thought the telenovela segments were great, and the presentation and storytelling on this show is way ahead of anything else in wrestling right now. I can't call them avant-garde, but it's really well done and smartly produced. That said, I stand by the idea that these matches didn't deliver in week one, even if coming out of this show I'm dying to see what happens next and what becomes of several intriguing characters (Ivelisse, Puma, Pentagon, Muertes).

Johnny Mundo is one of my least favorite performers in the entire industry right now. That dude just doesn't do anything for me. It all comes off as so fake. He can't even ever hit his own finish without it looking like a botched spot. He's also not a good promo. Not a fan at all. Putting him out there with Killshot wasn't even a good idea on paper to me, so whatever. It was what it was. They had a pretty good Spear spot on the outside.

I did think the first episode this season was better than the second but they're doing a good job of reintroducing us to the previous characters & bringing in some other people. Keeps things fresh. Looking forward to seeing Mysterio in Lucha Underground.

Episode 3 left a lot to be desired but the main event Last Man Standing was fun. Everything before that was kinda sloppy. The closing plot reveal was fun. I don't know if anything from this season is going to make me feel as excited as I was when Pentagon, Jr ran in on Mil Muertes at the end of the first episode though. That was crazy fun.

The next match was Mil Muertes vs El Fenix. This was a real good bout. They told the big man vs little man story really well. Some jerks in the front row refused to move when Muertes was going to toss Fenix . So Muertes says Fuck it and knocks both guys on their ass by tossing Fenix right at them.

The 3rd match was Evealisse against Tya and this was solid. Great finish as Evealisse caught Tya in a Triangle.

The main event was Cage/Puma/Misterio vs Mundo/Black/Evans.

If the guys went home at the 17 minute mark we would have had a really strong match. Both Misterio and Puma were FIP. They built to the big dives then it went another 8-10 minute match. It felt like one of those bloated PWG Mt. Rushmore matches. Well 3 of the 6 are PWG guys. Still it was a fun match.

The show had about 3,000-4,000 people there. With Misterio promising they'd be back. The crowd was super hot for the whole show. This was Lucha Underground 1st outing outside of the Temple. I'd think they would classify it as a major success.

Everything about that match was fantastic. From the way they let Rey have his moment, to touching on all the major fueds during the course of the match, to the way Mantanza just DESTROYED the field. I mean, if you're gonna debut a new monster, do it. Hell of a show.
