Watching wrestling under the influence

This is something I've thought about because of changes in my own habits.

A decade ago, I drank whilst watching quite a bit. I have really good memories of RoH, TNA and WWE for the second half of the 2000s, and wonder how accurate those memories are. I remember being fairly smashed by the end of a few WWE live events in Belfast too. Nowadays, I rarely get the tv to myself on a weekend night, so most of my wrestling watching is during the week, or during the day at weekends. And if the missus heard a beer crack open during those hours that's the last you'd hear from me ;) .

Anyway, curious about a few things -

How much booze before you'd question your evaluation of a match?

Do you think alcohol and wrestling complement each other?

Just general feelings on this?

I was stoned for nearly every piece of wrestling I watched from 2004 until early 2015. I stopped smoking weed in April of last year a couple months before the birth of my first daughter. I find now that my attention span is harder to control and that I'm less likely to watch wrestling for an extended period of time. Whether that's more due to my being sober or the fact that I have to also entertain a very small human, it's hard to say for sure. But I think smoking a bowl prior to or while watching definitely made me more optimistically analytical and less critical of the flaws in any given match.

I did a drunken review of a TNA show. I was 16. I couldn't make it through the show.

Depending on the strain I smoke, I either get in the mood for something go-go-go and lighter hearted or super analytical. Since I usually watch movies and not wrestling, though...

Went to a number of ROH shows with friends that often involved getting shitfaced because there was no way they were going to watch wrestling without alcohol. So while I barely remember Joe & Danielson vs. KentaFuji, I do remember how much fun we had chanting for Joe all night.

But those nights were few and far between. I'll always have a drink (meaning a single drink) before going out to dinner on Saturday and will usually watch some wrestling then, but that's not exactly getting hammered. Otherwise generally stone cold sober unless someone comes over to watch a PPV and we crack a beer. Basically its like going to or watching a game. If I really want to enjoy it then that's not a night to consume copiously.

I was drunk watching Mania this year with friends and family. Made the show two million times better. Although the next day stunk.

Rusev arriving on a tank while drank was the most amazing thing in the history of wrestling.

However, I don't drink very often so I don't have much to say about this. Maybe when the finalization of legalization of marijuana in Canada is completed I might use it to get through Raw.

I'd say that alcohol has greatly inhibited my ability to watch wrestling live and coherently and, even in some cases, follow the match. I drink way less than I did say 20 years ago, but the times I do seriously drink (generally 3-4 times a year) are confined to when I go to live wrestling with friends. I've found (and even this is true when I watch on television) that when I'm drunk I favor matches that have bigger spots than matches that are well put together with lots of psychology.

Wait, in Canada, people wait for weed to be legal to smoke it?

I watch most wrestling under the influence of a little 420 nowadays, but that's mostly because I do everything under the influence of a little 420. I suppose I'd have to watch sober to compare the two, and that sounds scary.

Always got shit faced on alcohol live at the last 2 manias and it was ridiculous each time. Definitely had the same reactor to Rusevs tank.

I rarely ever drink while watching wrestling on TV but live lucha libre is best enjoyed while having a cold Tecate with chamoy and chile. It's part of the experience. Watching minis wrestling is a lot better when drinking cheap mezcal cocktails too.

I have a friend who sometimes books wrestling shows in Spain. Most of the talent isn't very good but he's brought some decent UK wrestlers and some bigger stars like Paul London or Hikaru Shida. He uses an old folks recreational home as his venue and right in front of that place there's one of those old school bars for old men where they have Bulldog Gin and Tonics for 4 euro. Depending on the quality of the show I can have anywhere from 2 to 4.

Cracking open a few cold ones when watching a live PPV is great. Wrestling is best enjoyed when you're moderately tipsy.

Trying to watch something after coming in after a night on the piss is a totally different beast though. Last time I tried this, I was set on watching the Michaels/'Taker Hell in a Cell match. I ended up watching only the midget match from the same show before passing out.
