Ricky Jackson Posted June 4, 2016 Report Posted June 4, 2016 One of the greatest sports legends of all time. Ties to wrestling include being influenced by Freddie Blassie and/or Gorgeous George for his promo style, famous mixed match with Inoki in 1976, guest ref at Mania I, and involved in Mid South angle with Jake Roberts and the Snowman in 85. Plus Gorilla Monsoon gave him an airplane spin once RIP champ
Timbo Slice Posted June 4, 2016 Report Posted June 4, 2016 Not to mention that in a weird roundabout way Ali directly influenced Billy Graham's promos, which then influenced Dusty, which then influenced basically everyone.
S.L.L. Posted June 4, 2016 Report Posted June 4, 2016 One of the greatest promos of all time. And influential on wrestling at that!
ghost Posted June 5, 2016 Report Posted June 5, 2016 "I’ve wrestled with alligators, I’ve tussled with a whale. I done handcuffed lightning and throw thunder in jail. You know I’m bad. Just last week, I murdered a rock, Injured a stone, Hospitalized a brick. I’m so mean, I make medicine sick."
El-P Posted June 5, 2016 Report Posted June 5, 2016 For some reason, I thought he was dead already. Yep, a huge influence on pro-wrestling as far as promo goes. The Greatest.
goodhelmet Posted June 6, 2016 Report Posted June 6, 2016 This can go in the wrestling folder. Ali was influenced by and then influenced to such a strong degree he deserves mention on the main forum.
Log Posted June 6, 2016 Report Posted June 6, 2016 Having worked in news in Louisville for 11 years, I've been fortunate enough to see Ali in person quite a few times. It's always impressive. You sometimes forget that he is possibly the most famous athlete ever. I got to edit my station's tribute to Ali. I'm very proud of this... http://www.wdrb.com/clip/12484144/remembering-a-legend-the-life-of-heavyweight-champion-muhammad-ali
WingedEagle Posted June 6, 2016 Report Posted June 6, 2016 Due to when I grew up and not being remotely into boxing I never developed any special appreciation for or connection to Ali. Just something I completely missed out on. That being said, this weekend has produced so much incredible reading that I absolutely couldn't turn away from. Also have quite a few fights, docs and clips queued up on the YouTube machine for when the time is right. Looking forward to checking out some classics.
Al Posted June 6, 2016 Report Posted June 6, 2016 His fight vs Cleveland Williams in '66 is one of the all time dominant performances in boxing history.
ZThomas Posted June 8, 2016 Report Posted June 8, 2016 I thought he was more influenced by Sweet Daddy Siki than Gorgeous George but he sited George because he was more famous
Outsider Posted October 6, 2016 Report Posted October 6, 2016 Ali is one of the greatest Americans period if not the greatest. He stands for freedom. If you haven't watched "When we were Kings" go watch it now!
