PeteF3 Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 You can go back to May of '87 with Jarrett (vs. Bockwinkel).
Kadaveri Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 Does Goldberg have the record for longest gap with no great matches in between? vs. Scott Steiner 2000 - vs. Brock Lesnar 2017.
Mad Dog Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 Does Goldberg have the record for longest gap with no great matches in between? vs. Scott Steiner 2000 - vs. Brock Lesnar 2017. Chief Jay Strongbow has 1955-1985 on that one.
Mad Dog Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 You can go back to May of '87 with Jarrett (vs. Bockwinkel). It's amazing how quickly he became good. There was a certain timing and crisp execution that he had early that always surprises me. He also seemed to carry himself with a certain confidence.
Kadaveri Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 Chief Jay Strongbow has 1955-1985 on that one. I have no idea what this 1955 match is?
Mad Dog Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 He debuted in 1955. So there is nothing to judge him on before then.
joeg Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 Tenryu 30 years 1985 w/ Jumbo vs Choshu and Saito 2015 vs Okada Vader 31 years 1986 vs Otto Wanz 2017 vs Will Ospreay Choshu 21 years 1983 vs Fujinami 2005 vs Shibata Akiyama 25 years 1993 Multiple great matches 2018 Multiple great matches
NintendoLogic Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 I'll say it: Shawn Michaels. Nearly 24 years between Midnight Rockers vs. Rose/Somers in 1986 and the Undertaker match at WM26.
Loss Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 Ric Flair 26 years vs. Jumbo Tsuruta (1982) vs Shawn Michaels (2008) And he really may had a great match before 1982 that I didn't see. I'd actually go back to 1978 for Flair. Jumbo match on 4/27/78 from All Japan. It's possible after viewing the Mid Atlantic film footage with more focus that there will be more going back to 1975 too, but I'm not sure about that.
Mad Dog Posted May 10, 2018 Report Posted May 10, 2018 He's got a bunch of stuff against Wahoo in 75 and 76, I think there's a good chance you could find someone great if it's on tape.
DMJ Posted May 10, 2018 Report Posted May 10, 2018 I know he's not really in the running for longest, but I'm curious to know how Dustin Rhodes would fare for those of you more knowledgable about exact dates of his really good/great matches.
Matt D Posted May 10, 2018 Report Posted May 10, 2018 I know he's not really in the running for longest, but I'm curious to know how Dustin Rhodes would fare for those of you more knowledgable about exact dates of his really good/great matches. The Clash tag with Steamboat vs Arn/Larry would probably be his first great one. Nov 91. As a match/angle, there's an argument for the Dibiase 10 minute challenge, and I'm high on the six man with the Young Pistols vs the Freebirds from GAB 91, but "Great" seems a little much maybe?
Loss Posted May 10, 2018 Report Posted May 10, 2018 1989 with Terry Funk in Florida to Randy Orton in 2013 makes 24 years and puts Dustin in the upper echelon.
Matt D Posted May 10, 2018 Report Posted May 10, 2018 1989 with Terry Funk in Florida to Randy Orton in 2013 makes 24 years and puts Dustin in the upper echelon. Is that Funk match readily available?
Boss Rock Posted May 10, 2018 Report Posted May 10, 2018 Jushin Liger-26 years vs. Naoki Sano (1990) vs. KUSHIDA (2016) If we're going multiman you can push this back a few years for Liger. Any ones in particular?
Mad Dog Posted May 10, 2018 Report Posted May 10, 2018 I think you could move Liger forward a little bit with one of the Owen matches. I know opinion is kind of divided on those but I really enjoyed them.
Childs Posted May 10, 2018 Report Posted May 10, 2018 Tenryu 30 years 1985 w/ Jumbo vs Choshu and Saito 2015 vs Okada Vader 31 years 1986 vs Otto Wanz 2017 vs Will Ospreay Choshu 21 years 1983 vs Fujinami 2005 vs Shibata Akiyama 25 years 1993 Multiple great matches 2018 Multiple great matches That Tenryu-Okada match was pitiful. I love Tenryu as much as anyone but he could barely move. Okada essentially had to powerbomb himself.

Childs Posted May 10, 2018 Report Posted May 10, 2018 Fujinami should be on the list. Had the great jr. heavyweight matches vs. Ryuma Go in 1978 and the MUGA classic vs. Nishimura in '06.
Phil Schneider Posted May 10, 2018 Report Posted May 10, 2018 The Fargo match is just a clip though, right? And yeah I forgot about that tag with the exoticos. That was a riot indeed. I am not sure where I saw it, but it was the whole thing or the vast majority

Any ones in particular? Earliest Liger match to make the DVDVR NJ set was April '85 vs. Kosugi. While not one I'd rate as great, the Kosugi match was pretty damn good. Great, as in **** or better? I'd go there on these without question: Antonio Inoki & Keiichi Yamada vs. Nobuhiko Takada & Osamu Kido (2/5/86) 5 vs. 5 Gauntlet (5/1/86) -- Arguably not 1 match, but pick your poison on that debtae. Akira Nogami, Tatsutoshi Goto, Keiichi Yamada, Kantaro Hoshino & Shiro Koshinaka vs. Kuniaki Kobayashi, Hiroshi Hase, Hiroshi Saito, Norio Honaga & Kensuke Sasaki (4/27/88) Tatsumi Fujinami, Keiichi Yamada, Shiro Koshinaka, Yoshiaki Fujiwara & Kengo Kimura vs. Hiroshi Saito, Kuniaki Kobayashi, Super Strong Machine, Masa Saito & Riki Choshu (Elimination Match, 9/12/88)

CYF Posted May 10, 2018 Report Posted May 10, 2018 Is there a joshi wrestler that fits this criteria?
