WWA was Dick the Bruiser's group in Indianapolis? I'll give that a go.

If there's still space I'd love to be in this. Gives me an excuse to post here more

[1999-08-22-WWF-Summerslam] Road Dogg and Chris Jericho

You think you're smart because you can spell your name "R-O-A-D D-O-double G"? You want to impress me? Spell lugubrious! -
This is such an awesome idea that words can't express it. The criteria needs to be as open as possible. I'm OK with saying "100 greatest workers ever". But some people consider "work" to be everything: wrestling ability, drawing, promo work, ability to bring a crowd into the match, etc. For example, Bobby Heenan acknowledged that Jesse Ventura was a horrible wrestler, but turned around and said he could work because he was charismatic enough that his ability to work the crowd carried him and disguised the poor match quality. So there's some merit into including criteria that isn't just "how many great matches did they have", but if someone is using that as their primary (or only) qualifier, then that makes the debate better. FWIW, Ventura is NOT likely to make my list, but I'm using that as an example as to why the criteria should be open.

Russo said on Twitter he hates when wrestling companies take commercial breaks during their matches. I guess we know why he never let TV matches go more than 45 seconds.

Not enjoying the "Legends" shows at all for some reason, probably because of how disjointed they seem. The one at 7pm tonight was from the first two nights of tapings, but I don't need to see TWO Tug Taylor matches when there was a kick ass TV Title tournament going on those two nights. Plus with the Legends format leading to occasional replays of Major League Wrestling, this led to the Gilbert-Garvin "fans search for weapons" and Lynn-Kid hold vs. hold matches to be heavily clipped, and those are my two favorite GWF matches ever. Then again, I haven't been forced to sit through Brandon Baxter's Teen Beat or whatever his shitty segment was called, so maybe I'm not giving the legends format enough credit. Overall I'm really enjoying the look back, even if they're airing them in such a way that I'll never get them all recorded.

A thread in which Dylan compares various wrestlers to HHH
JHawk replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in The Microscope
Because he idolizes Flair and uses Race's kneedrop and Arn's spinebuster? Beyond that, I dunno. -
I was on record saying they should have just found some way for Lawler to take on Miz at WrestleMania since they gave it a WrestleMania-type build to begin with. Lots of people said "But Lawler can't main event Mania" but I'll be damned if I wasn't more interested in their match last night than I am for anything they've been building up toward with this Mania so far.
-
I'm biased toward this since I was in attendance for that show. I will say that in person, it gave a vibe that you were indeed seeing something special. Best match on that show by far.

Weird to hear someone say Cornette was doing the Gangstas angle with "kid gloves" when he lost a lot of TV markets because of that angle. He might have gone out of business sooner if he went any further with it.
-
Right, but given that Harley Race was never given the courtesy of any sort of acknowledgement (I think Gorilla even called him a "youngster" in one of his first appearances) it just seemed out of place. Of course, Kerry wound up being a SummerSlam replacement for Beefcake after his parasailing accident anyway, so they had to get him over in a hurry.
-
Jerry Lawler (several times, most notably to Andy Kaufman): "I couldn't warm up to you if we were cremated together."
-
Even weirder was the fact Vince and Jesse acknowledged that he came from a great wrestling family during that debut.
-
I forget which match it was (I want to say it was Warrior-Rude but I think I'm wrong) but it was definitely SummerSlam 89 after a chair shot outside the ring. Jesse Ventura: "Now why isn't that a disqualification?" Tony Schiavone: "It took place outside the ring." Ventura: "So it's OK to grab a gun and shoot your opponent as long as you do it outside the ring?"
-
The problem with this was that they advertised it on TV as being part of the PPV right up until showtime. Had this actually happened, the match would have been a one hour draw and had maybe five minutes of total wrestling. We could have changed the name of the card to "SuperStall." Amazingly, this could have still had amazing heat had it taken place. Cannot wait for Loss to get to the next issue, as I'm looking forward to seeing how Dave felt about SuperClash.
-
As a matter of fact, when Cornette was put on the Committee, there were people who felt he shouldn't be there because he'd had no experience. Eddie has to be who Dave was talking about here.
-
In fairness, that PPV actually did make quite a bit of money. Too bad it's because Sting vs. Jake Roberts was the main event.
-
I don't. I'm trying to transfer my VHS to DVD and re-catalog everything, and I'm so far behind I don't know if I really have room for more. That won't stop me from getting the DVDVR Texas set when it comes out, but there you go.

Wade couldn't have written that. He actually made good points.

My dad and brother always watched the WWF on Saturday mornings, so I got into it basically by being in the living room when it was on. My earliest memory is one of the tag team title changes, but I don't remember which one. All I even remember about it is my brother asking my dad how the match could have a one hour time limit when the show was only an hour long.
-
Did you really expect him to say "The match would be money but it will suck"?
-
I've seen people who dealt with Andre through most of his career say that Andre was nice in the beginning, but as the years went on he got meaner and/or more miserable. It could have been the pain, it might have been the fame going to his head. I personally think it was a combination of the two.

The History of the World Heavyweight Championship
JHawk replied to MikeCampbell's topic in Pro Wrestling
Karl Lauer told this story at last year's Cauliflower Alley Club reunion. Los Angeles during Terry's run had a three match angle with Terry and Chavo Guerrero Sr. In the blowoff, Chavo, normally a junior heavyweight, weighed in about five pounds above the heavyweight minimum. Chavo pinned Funk at around the 58-minute mark to apparently win the title, Funk demanded Chavo get on the scale...and Chavo lost so much weight during the match that he fell about three pounds below the heavyweight minimum. As a result, Funk kept the championship. Looking back, it's amazing anybody ever cared about the NWA World Heavyweight Title. -

Yeah, because we wouldn't want to get the information right or anything. Still, even with that edict, they can't use books? I know there's an MSG results book available somewhere. -
Given the time frame, I'm betting this is what morphed into Super Clash III (December 13, 1988, Chicago). I'm glad as 1500 people in the Metrodome would have been bad beyond comprehension to try and watch. I think half the shows the AWA had in 1986 were called "Wrestlerock" in all honesty. But as far as an official Wrestlerock II, I'm pretty sure there wasn't one. Madusa vs. Mimi is a match I would have actually wanted to see, but not for wrestling quality.
