  2. I thought this was solid. Nothing great, but the first of its kind in the U.S. and an impressive outing. I actually didn't mind all the gore because there was plenty of wrestling to build to those moments, and also because they didn't overstay their welcome. I have to wonder why ECW did this here instead of at Living Dangerously where they might have been able to draw with it. ***
  3. Tajiri was just incredible here for so many reasons. I haven't seen him carry himself with this much confidence before. The guy had really learned to project himself as a major star by this point. Also, my favorite awesome moment was when the crowd started chanting "Boring!" after a standing switch exchange at the beginning and Tajiri responded by ... grabbing a headlock. They quickly complained and got it out of their systems and got back into the match. So he's also working like a veteran. And then he's in with Kid Kash, who I have liked in the matches we've seen lately, but who is having an off night here, but who Tajiri still manages to carry to something solid. This was pretty much a one-man show, but it was a hell of a show all the same. This is a three-star match I'd go to bat for way more than a lot of ****+ matches. ***
  4. I liked this as something different. Short and to the point, but they really maximize the time and do a ton of crowd-pleasing stuff that works. Not something I feel strongly about, but if you like matches that give the crowd exactly what they want at every turn, this is pretty cool. Gotta give credit to any match that in four minutes can do four table spots, a double juice, and set up two of CW's seconds getting just desserts.
  5. We get about 8 minutes of an 18-minute 2/3 falls match and it's glorious. Everyone seems to have a little more pep in their step than usual, even those whose step already contains a lot of pep, like Wagner, who does his criss-cross/low dropkick while partner applies the camel clutch spot much faster than normal, and the same applies to Otani with his bootscrape. I agree that each fall built really well, and I could pretty much watch this all day. We really need a New Japan Classics series that covers 1997-2000. ***1/2
  6. I thought this was a really fun TV match. I don't know if Rikishi was working with a legit injury or what, but I like that it's a long term thing that's playing out over multiple matches. Show looked really good here, and HHH eating the fall from Rock felt like a much needed moment for Rock to diffuse some of the heat. Super hot hot tag, and Rikishi is a great seller and has his act down pat. ***
  7. I think Raven vs Maven happened on Raw in 2002. I'm not sure if Ricky Morton ever faced Scott Norton.
  8. The second (already obvious) false DX breakup angle of the year? Already? Yeah, they were really scrambling for something to do with the Outlaws at this point, especially when they had two new tag teams emerging that were much hotter, and a third, who they're facing in this match, that would be at that level soon enough. The match is mechanically better with X-Pac than it would be with Billy Gunn, but Waltman is so stale that I'm not sure it matters. This is a solid TV tag though, and I like that Edge works FIP instead of Christian to change things up. Terri Runnels and Tori are baggage that sort of distract from this rather than adding to it. Call it sympathy pains for Jericho being saddled with Chyna. As much as some things were admittedly lost when the WWF lost their sense of obligation to find something for everyone to do, some things were also gained.
  9. Fun TV match. Jericho was probably happy to finally have some new guys to work with and maybe start escaping the purgatory with Chyna where he'd found himself. The visual of him brawling up the entrance with Malenko while Chyna follows them to stay attached made me laugh. Poor Chris just can't get away from her.
  10. Terry Boy is a little older and a little more jaded. I'm not much on a match where they treat exploders like chops or strikes. The match has some good stuff after that, but that just killed it for me. Sorry.
  11. I like the Gedo/Jado approach to tag team wrestling and Kanemura complemented them well, but something was missing here to put this over the top. I'm glad I watched it, but it never seemed to come together as a good match. I think the big problem was how one-sided this was, with the heels way too dominant. The action itself is really good, with everyone doing a solid no-frills style, almost like a ring full of Arn Andersons and Steve Austins. I am expecting Gedo and Jado to have moments of brilliance this decade when the stars align properly, and this definitely got me hyped for more of them as a team, even if the match never kicked into high gear. And yeah, Yamakawa doesn't do much for me.
  12. Dave always says Rock and Big Show at Royal Rumble 2000 had a messed up finish with Rock clearly hitting first and they had to come up with an angle to cover for it, but that wasn't evident from the camera angle watching the match.
  13. This ended up a pretty short match after intros and everything. I do like the teaming on the babyface side, just because it pretty much says those are the three top babyfaces that aren't Hogan, Goldberg and Sting, all of whom are too big league to do a four-minute six-man tag on Thunder anyway. The crowd has been really into Sid in 2000. Not much to this. The biggest surprise for me was that Kidman screwed up to cost his team the fall, rather than actually eating the fall himself.
  14. Flair had to help Bagwell lock in the figure four. Flair is always good for creatively sneaking in low blows but he was a little too giving for someone who didn't deserve it otherwise. Both guys are going through the motions big time. This may be the most auto-pilot Flair performance I've ever seen. Luger comes in with the baseball bat to hit Bagwell after Elizabeth distracts the ref. They are heels and that's fine, but there's no universe where Ric Flair should need a run-in to beat Buff Bagwell. Curt Hennig's babyface save may have worked if he hadn't turned so many times after babyface turn teases that were swerves, firmly establishing that he couldn't be trusted. Yuck to all of this.
  15. Dustin Rhodes does a pre-match promo calling the fans "smart marks" that very clearly goes over their heads. Fans just weren't there at this point. Still, that's far, far from the worst offense WCW has of that nature in 2000. This is more angle than match, and it's all pretty bad and depressing stuff from two great career talents. These fans don't have a clue about anything going on. They are just there because the stars are in town, nothing more. But they aren't invested in shit.
  16. I liked how they built so much heat on Magnum Tokyo and beat him to a bloody pulp, even if I do think it's time for Crazy Max to start seeing at least some occasional comeuppance. That's probably unfair since this was outside their home promotion. Still, this was a pretty cool massacre, and I'm really enjoying following all of these guys. I thought they did maybe one or two too many false finishes at the end, but this was still an excellent match. ****

  18. Yeah, enough of this thread. I made the mistake of commenting on Trump at the board shortly after the election and vowed not to do it again, so I'm not going to do it here. This is being closed because it veered too far from wrestling, and because it has become an insult haven. We actually launched PWO in 2007 because knowing people had different political leanings than ourselves was coloring our opinions of their wrestling posts too much, so we've gotten way off track from our original mission. I need some time to think. Until then, everyone cool it, please.
  19. I'm hoping Strowman gets a real run as champion eventually. It would be awesome to see him be the one to knock off Brock for good, whenever that happens, then have a really long run taking on all comers until they finally have whoever is going to be their top babyface ready. If it doesn't play out exactly like that, so be it, but I think Braun is a special talent.

  21. Yes, I was referring to WWE's point of view as reported through the WON.
  22. Funny how we only hear this when certain people get a shot, and we never hear anything about it when others get a shot. We heard constantly about bad ratings and merchandise figures when Daniel Bryan was the top challenger, but nothing about declining ratings when Seth Rollins was champion in 2015 and got a ton of TV time, and I don't think we've ever heard anything at all about his merchandise sales. I can't recall Dave discussing Charlotte's ability to move the needle either way. Double standards every way you turn. Despite conventional wisdom, numbers too have opinions.
  23. If I've asked people to stop, it's probably because I meant it. Edit to add: If we can't stop, I'll close the thread and probably take more concrete action to tell everyone what can and cannot be talked about, which I really don't want to do and would hate to do and am not comfortable doing.
  24. There are liberal people in red states and conservative people in blue states, yes. But let's talk about wrestling.
  25. Yeah, I think it's okay to talk about Trump in a wrestling context, since wrestling is often a reflection of culture, as is politics, and there is overlap. But just straight political posts I'd rather avoid. So yeah, Trump's relationship with the McMahons, his history in wrestling and even speculation on how his cultural impact may change wrestling is all fair game. Just offering opinions on his Presidency we can keep away from the board. It's a fine line, but I will do my best to trust everyone to walk it carefully.
