I know I'm going to be in bed tonight, wide awake trying to figure out the sense in this.

Flair's emotions (along with his bills and lawsuits, etc.) have seemed to be running high for the last several years. Between this and (to a much lesser extent) the blood clot, he must be in a worse agony than any of us can imagine. I can only hope that what comes out of this is that he finds peace within his place and life, and live his golden years as best as he can now.

I remember seeing the video on a country network, so I'm not surprised it didn't get a little airplay.

Don't think you can top this as far as coverage.

That segment was Gold though. Pure Gold. It was a good segment, considering the place Flair found himself at the time. I think Ric can be equally good as a face as he is a heel, but he's been a bad face more times than he's been a bad heel (TNA doesn't count). Looking back, bringing his family into it like they did seems pointless when you consider that he's probably one of, if not the greatest heels of pro wrestling period.

I can't help but feel WCW getting musical acts to come in and be a part of angles could have been done better. It's something they did a lot of during this time-frame EL-P is covering, there's still KISS, Megadeth and James Brown to come.

I really liked the match they had with the Natural Disasters in Japan, a month or so before their Royal Rumble match. They come out to "Iron Man" and at one point, Tenta's sumo background is played up.

It's an uneven but effective segment. Savage really does make it work, and fits as much in as he needed to to put over the seriousness of the situation by slowly starting to sympathize with the Warrior. I often do wonder if they were going to put Warrior and Savage as a team against Undertaker and Jake after SummerSlam, were it not for Warrior leaving. The way it would have been built could have been way better than the Ultimate Maniacs.

When did he actually start saying that? Because he'd still have the odd inspired performance like the promo on the last Nitro. I always assumed "I had no self-confidence, until Vince/Trip/WWE helped me" was his way of putting over WWE 10 or so years ago. As an aside, I remember in an interview he did with Meltzer around this time (for Dave's Eyada show), him saying that the most fun he'd ever had in his career was the time he was on top with the Horsemen and when he was in WWF.

The shine started to come off when he came back in '98. The Flair of 1986 wouldn't have done a promo cuffed to a rope in his underwear. I'm not even sure if he would have done it '96. That off-time he had that year must have done something irreversible to him because in a sense it was never the same again.

Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 3
flyonthewall2983 replied to Loss's topic in Megathread archive
I think Arnold was the best possible choice. It adds real prestige to Bruno's induction and makes it the big deal it should be. Plus I think it leaves little doubt now that Bruno's induction will close the night. -

Bruno is being inducted by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Would have preferred Larry but Arnold makes sense especially after seeing the video of the both of them at both their inductions to the International Sport Hall of Fame. -
Russo would have called this appearance a success for WWE.

Wrestling in unusual contexts

. I've been re-watching the show from the beginning so that piqued my interest to say the least. It's an awful song, but it works with what the trailer has been getting across. -
Randy/Rey would have been an awesome match.

I'm interested in the final product, but I hope the people who put together the DVD will be very liberal with outtakes and such. -

Sounds like a distribution thing to me. -

Probably Vince still pissed off about how he left before. -

I loved those almanacs too. Bravo John for your work on the timelines, those were especially entertaining to read. -
The Pledge of Allegiance thing is a nice call-back to something Slaughter did himself during his feud with Sheiky Baby way back when.

[1991-03-24-WWF-Wrestlemania VII] Randy Savage vs Ultimate Warrior
flyonthewall2983 replied to Loss's topic in March 1991
I love the video packages they did back then. No music, no hyper-fast editing of segments, just everything that happened up to then. -
I should mention I know there's no way in hell WWE would do what I suggested, just that I'd like to see someone else try that approach.

[1990-07-07-WWC-Anniversario] Abdullah the Butcher vs Zeus
flyonthewall2983 replied to Loss's topic in July 1990
I can imagine why Zeus was a hit in Puerto Rico. Roughly the same reasoning I think they might view No Holds Barred as akin to a tragedy. -
I'd like to see a promotion where the creative head is someone who worked on episodic television, but has a deep knowledge and appreciation of pro wrestling. Something like an equivalent of the great cable series' we've been since the days of The Sopranos and The Shield, to WWE's stock network show. In an era of entertainment where comic book movies are getting serious critical praise on top of serious box office, there's no real reason (other than Vince's ignorance) professional wrestling could follow suit and give the world great television on top of great wrestling.

Shane Douglas got it right by saying he's an asshole, but in no way denying his ability and influence as a worker.
