  1. Yes, but the crowd also had a long rest period from "holy shit that was the coolest thing I've ever seen" to gear back up for the mega-match. The same way they had time after Piper's "retirement" match to gear up for Savage-Steamboat. If they had to go straight from Savage and Steamboat tearing the house down and going a million miles an hour (by WWF standards at the time), they may not have been as kind to the lumbering Giant. Yes it's the way Vince likes to do things. By that same token, it's what the WWF audience had been trained to expect. A deviation from that risks producing a different result. No we don't all agree, that's why we're having the discussion Even Meltzer speculated at the time that Hogan-Andre might go on in the middle to cover for what he figured was going to be a stinker of a match and to keep them from following something hot.
  2. I'm talking in the other direction: if it went Steamer-Savage then Hogan-Andre, back-to-back to close the card, do you really think Hogan-Andre... the most anticipated match of that entire generation... the one that sold 90K tickets couldn't have followed Steamer-Savage? I actually do think having Hogan-Andre immediately follow Savage-Steamboat would have been a problem. For many WWF-centric fans, Savage-Steamboat was the greatest thing they'd ever seen and to have Hogan work an immobile Andre directly after did pose a legitimate risk of cooling the crowd. As it stood, I remember more fans talking about Savage-Steamboat when it was over. All anyone remembered about the main event was that Hogan bodyslammed the Giant. WM3 was well laid-out in terms of match sequencing. There were three main matches people want to see and WWF gave them Piper-Adonis in the first 3rd, Savage-Steamboat in the middle and Hogan-Andre at the end. Plenty of time for people to mark the fuck out for the matches in question and still recharge for the big finish.
  3. Meltzer is the greatest pro wrestling journalist ever. But as good as he is at covering that niche, let's not lose sight of how little that actually means.
  4. In a post-Simpsons world, I can only hear "Skinner" said in Superintendent Chalmers' voice.
  5. But you can never leave. (sorry, had to be done)
  6. Yeah. I was expecting way worse after the last comment.
  7. Flair was on his way to the ring for a match when he decided to harass the announce booth, so this is one of the few times where Flair wearing the robe actually makes sense. Piper decking Vince with the chair was one of those moments that was burned into my brain when I first saw this, and I didn't even know that Vince was the boss at the time. That wooden chair made a great THWACK sound.
  8. If that was the case then Hak would have got to brain Bisch with the cane.
  9. Definitely second that. He sounds like the old drunk telling shaggy dog stories at the corner bar. Also, I like these quick synopses of the shoots. Maybe a separate thread for them?
  10. That's how I viewed it. Never understood the whining over it. Heels are supposed to be lying jerks. I could have done without the interrupting of matches that were interesting (maybe have him attack both guys when it was over instead?) but it wasn't much different than Jericho proclaiming himself 3-0 over Goldberg or whatever it was, except Jericho was a smark darling at the time.
  11. I remember watching this as an 11 year old and being totally confused by it. Watching as an adult has not made it any easier to understand.
  12. if this ends in a JVK vs. Andrews death match, I'm cool with it.
  13. We'll know for sure the day Flair croaks. I think he'll get coverage over and above Bearer myself, personally. I can say that a large number of people that do not watch/like/associate with pro wrestling that I know talked about Bearer's passing after it happened than I thought ever would know or care who he was, enough that it legitimately surprised me. His character was memorable enough that those same non-wrestling people said "I remember that guy" a lot, which at least shows me that at points, WWE and possibly WCW were big enough that people with no interest in it were exposed to it enough through other means that it made an imprint. Sure, but there's a difference between being surprised at how many people remembered Paul Bearer and saying that more people know who he is than Ric Flair. Flair's one of the few like Hogan and Savage who would get mainstream media attention when they die, or in Savage's case did. Oh your dad said so? Why didn't you mention that before? Now I'm all turned around on the subject.
  14. That's just silly.
  15. Austin didn't want to work Hogan but was still caught in the nWo invasion. He figured he could at least get a good match out of Hall.
  16. That was the part that they really needed to explain better. Did DiBiase know he was bringing in a fake Taker? If so, why was he going ballistic when his Taker first saw Paul Bearer and looked to be going back to him? Was Underfaker playing Ted? Who was Underfaker? Just some guy who happened to have a trench coat and gloves that decided to step up after the Royal Rumble? It was a neat concept (for a guy like me who likes the goofy Taker stuff) but the execution left a lot to be desired.
  17. That also played in to Tatanka joining DiBiase at Summerslam. It makes sense that he'd "lie down" for Dibiase's Taker leading up to the event in exchange for the money.
  18. "Tell the cops to stay back. This is Dean Malenko. No...MALENKO! You know who I am, dammit!"

    Kamala

The gimmick doesn't bother me because it's so over-the-top and ridiculous that it's hard for me to be genuinely offended by it. I like a lot of his work minus his 93 babyface run (although Kamala learning to bowl is hilarious), the Andre cage match was fun and the Hogan matches were really good. Ol' Sugar Bear is ok by me.
  20. That's Chris Adams for you. Not Brian. Brian was overused and I want him away from my TV set immediately. Ahh shit how the fuck did i put Brian Adams in there? I prefer the singer over the wrestler in that case Crush may not have been great shakes in the ring, but I'd watch an hour of his matches from any era before I'd listen to that song from Robin Hood.
  21. Sid's pretty much what I love about pro wrestling. For me he hits that note that Dick Graham & Kal Rudman hit for you. He's my perfect brand of goofy.
  22. It's rare that I agree with Meltzer on anything MMA-related, but he's right.
  23. Go to any MMA message board. Look at any twitter account with a handle like "BROCKUFC4EVA666" or similar bullshit. You'll see plenty of cringe-worthy stuff. Throw a rock through any corner of cyberspace and you'll hit at least a dozen douchebags. That's just the way it is. The sexist stuff is hardly localized to Rousey either. Been happening since Carano. I was referring to Meltzer.
  24. Except every fighter before every event. The internet's a cesspool. The Rousey stuff is only different if you're looking to make a narrative of it.
