  1. Slightly off topic OJ but do you have any idea of how Ikeshita went out? Her last appearance (judging from the episodes on youtube) was her All Pacific title loss to Mimi Hagiwara in what looks to be a good old fashioned screw job to me. The ref pins Yumi whilst her shoulder's blatantly off the mat. She gets up from the mat and looks PISSED (yes, she actually makes a facial expression!), and walks straight to the back. No remonstrating with the ref, no post match angle/shenanigans, no retirement ceremony in future episodes, nothing. Gone. Hagiwara looks puzzled. I've heard that she was getting married which I'm guessing was a no no? Am I looking too far into this? I'm gutted she's gone. Watching some of these AJW shows and she's easily the highlight. It's a shame she was mostly booked in tedious brawls because she could fucking GO when given the opportunity and showed a lot of range in ring. Cool as fuck too.
  2. Yeah the 81 match left me pretty bored too. I thought they got better with each outing together.
  3. Added- Lex Luger vs Tommy Rich (NWA Clash of Champs 8 9/12/89) Lex Luger vs Bran Pillman (NWA Hallowen Havoc 10/28/89) I've been going through the big 1989 NWA shows and to my surprise Luger's became my favourite guy from that period. Not only is he an awesome arrogant prick, but his matches have been consistently good to great and he's more than held his end in them. It's the most motivated I've seen him. Apart from some uninspired armbar time filling, this is the best match Pillman's had yet. Jim Cornette vs Paul Heyman (NWA Great American Bash 7/23/89) I loved the fuck out of this and their feud in general. Cornette as a babyface is just wrong, wrong, wrong but it's a credit to Heyman for somehow managing to be even more loathsome. The match itself was way better than I expected; Cornette threw some decent rights and Heyman focused his attack on Paul's dodgy leg. The pop Cornette gets is one of the more surreal moments in wresting history
  4. Added - Terry Funk vs Ricky Steamboat (NWA 6/14/89) Two legends dong all the things you love about them. Fire, stiffness, brawling, crazy bumps, drunken stumbling and - following a near fall from a piledriver to the floor - Funk delivering the best punches perhaps ever. Funk whacks Steamboat with a mic for the DQ. Extra points for the post match angle where Luger comes down to save The Dragon from a beating, only to decide that clotheslining his head off is a more fun thing to do. A fallen Steamboat begs off Luger who has a chair in his hand. I don't remember any other babyface selling fear for an oncoming chair beating like this. It's super effective. He sells the shots beautifully too. This and a fun Steiners vs Varsity Club match saved a disappointing Clash 7 card (although the Ding Dongs and Norman the Lunatic took shitness to amusing levels, to be fair). All three guys were tremendous here.
  5. Steve Williams vs Kenta Kobashi (AJPW 09/03/94) The Greatest Leg Drop Ever. Also; Holy shit that crowd when Kobashi got back dropped from the top rope. This didn't quite make it onto my indulgent fave matches list as it was a touch too long and felt like it was losing direction at times but it was a decent showing from both guys. The test of strength-shoulder bargey shit at the beginning might have been the best part. Loved Williams cockily skipping in the middle of the ring after shrugging off a Kobashi charge and, later, his coked-up 'powering up' after he'd knocked Kenta to the outside.
  6. Added Akira Hokuto & Aja Kong vs Dynamite Kansai & Yumiko Hotta, Elimination match AJW 08/24/94 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-swMLIU41k The opening work before Kong's elimination wasn't very inspired and I'm not too keen on the idea of the champ being the first to go. Also, minus a million points for being robbed of the majesty of 'Oro De Ley' in the intros. STILL . . loved this. It's Hokuto up against the odds and there's nothing like Hokuto up against the odds. I seen it before and knew the result but was still on edge for every near fall, still willing her to move out way of every kick and splash. Still absolutely gutted when she fell.
  7. Added - Steve Williams vs Mitsuharu Misawa (AJPW 07/28/94) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AINz3SQBdmc Well it looks like this is the match that has finally sold me on Steve Williams. I didn't like the Miracle Violence stuff I've seen much at all but I'll blame that on Gordy. This was an excellent Williams performance. He controls the match by focusing on Misawa's back. Misawa tries to get back into it with a couple of his exciting flurries but gets cut off both times by the spine buster, the first one of which Williams just kinda dead lifts him into position for, and it looked great. Williams is a fucking tank. His flying tope thing was a great surprise and got me laughing and sitting up in my seat like good wrestling moments do. There's another awesome cut-off down the back end where Misawa goes for a spinning forearm only to be caught in a viscous backdrop. I haven't fully embraced Misawa quite yet. He's obviously a great worker and his offence is off the charts but he's just not connecting. Kobashi draws me in with his selling and expressiveness, Kawada can sell the leg like no other and has that aura of violence about him. Misawa is more someone that I admire than truly like, for now, and I don't think he's as good at working from underneath as them two. Cracking match, although I could have done without the super slow motion replays of Misawa getting dropped onto his head at the end of the video and the doomy ambient drones that accompanied it.
  8. I just watched the closing angle. I'm kind of gutted I spoiled it before I watched because I loved that. Apart from the part where Bryan was comically stumbling up the ramp I thought it was executed perfectly. You could tell the crowd really cared by the end too. And Bryan's motivations totally make sense. It's WWE so they'll fuck it up next by week but the angle started wonderfully. Will have to go back and watch the rest of the show now.
  9. Added - Jackie Sato vs Tommy Aoyama (AJW TV 01/04/80) http://youtu.be/JIVuOtm-x-o?t=25m9s Christ, the dread and the SHRIEKING as Aoyamo applies the figure four is spine tingling. I watched this a few days ago when it was uploaded to youtube and really didn't think much of it. After glancing at Loss's list I saw he'd ranked it surprisingly highly so I gave it a rewatch just now. Boy, I'm glad I did. There's issues with this match, namely (you guessed it) the selling (Sato gets her leg worked over for ages but continues on with her awesome looking knee based offence anyway) but I am willing to overlook that as the pacing to this was good and some of the spots and sequences were superb. There's a really cool and difficult looking spot where Sato sidesteps a Aoyama dropkick and manages to turn it into a backbreaker without using her arms to catch her. The sprinty stuff at the beginning was more enjoyable than usual too with some fun reversals, flying and spills to the outside. The crowd is immense. I don't think the kneecrusher has ever been this feared. For the finish Aoyama crashes and burns on the outside and legit hurts her leg. As she climbs back into the ring Sato gets her up for the backdrop which Tommy looks like she was supposed to reverse. But she doesn't get all the way over and lands right on her bloody head. Mercifully the match is stopped by KO ruling. Exciting stuff. Buddy Rose vs Matt Borne (PNW 6/6/81) The first fall has some lovely work to Borne’s back as you'd expect from Rose. Borne’s bumping for Buddy’s high impact stuff was slightly distracting as it looked a bit too comedic for a white meat babyface but that’s only a minor dribble. I loved the aeroplane spin reversal of Buddy’s backbreaker to finish the second fall. It looked neat and isn’t the kind of sequence I expected to see in 1981. One great thing about the Portland format is that it allows Rose time to get on the mic between falls and chat shit to wind up the crowd. Rose claims that Borne grabbed him by the trunks to get him into the aeroplane spin. Of course, as soon as the bell rings for the final fall Buddy rolls up Borne for the pin attempt by grabbing his trunks and repeatedly pulls at them (full moon!) while the refs back is turned. There’s a slight lull early in the third fall but both guys ramp it up towards the end and start biting each other and we get a tremendous blade job from Rose. Finish could have been better, but it’s the 1980s. What can you do?
  10. I'm putting together a similar list to Loss at the moment (or ripping him off). My blind spots are obvious. New Japan, Mid South, JCP/WCW, AWA and Mempho are just some of the things I'm working my way through at the minute and I'll add stuff when appropriate, along with comments. There is shit loads of post-Attitude WWE matches that I haven't seen or have forgotten about but that's not a priority right now. No Lucha yet either . (I can't do star ratings so I just bold the matches I super love. The red ones are the MOTY if there is one.) 1970's Masked Superstar vs Andre Giant (???) 11. To watch less wrestling to be honest. Although my other resolution is to finish my favourite matches and top 100 fav wrestler lists which will require me to watch Mid South, New Japan and the rest of NWA/WCW, which might work against my first resolution. Lucha watching will likely be a write off (again) for next year, but at least my 2015 wrestling resolution is already sorted.
  12. It's John Cena and the Undrtaker. They'd have done it. They're not going to put that on a card that already features Brock, Batista, Hogan, and possibly HBK. They'll save it for when they need it more.
  13. No it's not. And if Cena/Taker was happening they would have sowed the seeds already.
  14. I absolutely love the Portland Sports Arena atmosphere. I love the smokiness and the faint hostility that seems to creep underneath. You get Angry Granny, pimpstick cigar man, the leather jacket ruffians and, best of all, lots and lots of screaming girls. Screaming girls are one of the many reasons why 1980's wrestling is the best wrestling. I found the "GO wrestler GO!" chant a bit odd at first but it's great and lovely. I also love the bluntness of Don Owen ("You know I don't like to make loser leaves town matches Buddy. But I hate you. So lets have one next week!") and I enjoy his shit ring announcing. I like the very matter of fact commentary from whoever the commentary guy is, especially when he rips into the fans for getting involved with the action. But aahh . . . sweet Buddy. Buddy Rose was just some fat old tag team bloke that appeared on them Shawn Michaels dvds to me until recently. I'll always remember him trying to impress Shawn and Marty by attempting a back flip off of the top rope, only to weeble-wobble his way onto his bollocks. I appreciated that. He was my favourite part of them Midnight Rocker tags but I had no idea he'd had such a fabulous career before that. I have PWO to thank for that, especially Dylan and all his pimping. Thanks guys! He's such an adorable prat. His offence is dynamic and looks crisp and hurty. For a guy his size his bumping is immense and is funny as fuck. I like the 'calm down calm down' hand gesture he does to stir up the crowd and his general stalling and stooging is the best I've ever seen. He's great at doing all these little things to keep you amused/pissed off from bell to bell. The guy is just endlessly fun to watch and surprises you with various twists in his arsenal and adds little quirks to every match. In the last year or so I have discovered a shit load of wrestlers who I'd rate amongst my favourites today - Hansen, Jumbo, Taue, Kobashi, Kawada, All Japan Terry Funk, Bobby Eaton, Tracy Smothers, Bill Dundee . . . The best thing that I can say about Buddy is that I like him more than any of them. I like him more than anybody apart from maybe Flair and Hokuto. He cheers me up.
  15. Nobody has said that. It's an okay list, certainly better than the Power Slam one. I disagree with all of it. 2006 is an odd year to start from, is that the year the magazine was born?
  16. No. I might be wrong but I don't think he's ever been on there. He definitely hasn't been for the last several years. The idiot who writes it (Fin Martin) is one of those guys.
  17. Nice one Jimmy. I will have to inspect the tubes for them yawnnn I'm more awake tomorrow. (Or more likely when I get round to finishing my SMW and oldshool ROH viewing. And me 80s Memphis and Mid South and New Japan. And the 90's All Japan and late seventies AJW that's all over the tubes. And the WOS and indy stuff I keep meaning to watch. So umm . . . probably not tomorrow.) Although . . . I wasn't aware of this.
  18. Those TNA throw fests were pure torture I tell ya. I get a little sick in my mouth every time I think of going back.
  19. Would anybody be kind enough to knock up a list of all the best Smackdown Six stuff? Been meaning to check out that stuff for a while (also need to watch more Rey Mysterio in general, so two birds and all that).
  20. Stick to your guns Loss. If you remember enjoying it you enjoyed it.
  21. I've never seen Angle Vs Benoit for some reason. I might watch it in a minute but the thought of going back and watching HIM makes me a touch nauseous to be honest. I find it REALLY hard to stomach Kurt Angle and his suplexing boringness these days. As for Raw, well it was shit as usual. Orton's "you can all kiss my ass!" speech was the best thing he's done since the random Rick Rude promo he did a while back. He's comically awful at speaking anyway so you may as well have a bit of fun with it, be a bit silly from time to time. I was gonna do a big moan about the announce team taking 'selfies' while a match was happening but it doesn't matter really because nothing really matters anyway. They are not stars. They are nothing beyond wrestlers who wrestle every other wrestler every week for no reason beyond wrestling. There's no purpose or motivation or consequence. No stories, character development, consistency. Just heat leaching Authority Figures and a roster full of ineffective pillocks parity booked into monotony. A commentary team that just wants to have a laugh and be done with the silly wrestling shite and take selfies. It's like they turn up every week and creative throws its hands up and goes "shit guys, looks like we forgot this week! Tell you what, tell all the guys to go twenty minutes and nobody will notice", and then the wrestlers wrestle, forever, for nothing, for fucks sake, whoops! I'm doing a moan! But yeah, Big E Mark/ Real Americans and Randy/Bryan were fucking excellent if you're into that sort of thing.
  22. What does this mean exactly? I mean, you could say that the booking surrounding it and the push for the 'title unification' thing felt forced, but I don't see how the match itself was any more 'self conscious' than any other wrestling match that's ever happened. It was a pretty decent episode of Raw this week, even if all the (re)matches were a meaningless as ever. It was nice to see the Divas get something other than the usual 90 second rush job. Natalya is surprisingly not rubbish when given a bit of time. I enjoyed the stalling and the slight silliness at the beginning of the Shield match. It got a bit boring after that though. It picked up again after the missed spear spot and I loved the tale of the busted eye. I'm never a fan of the Shield losing (EVER!), especially when they're outnumbering some broken down meth head three on one, but the tension between Riegns and my Ambrose is simmering quite nicely. I enjoy Big E, he's fun as hell to watch that guy. But he's missing something. He needs a finisher that looks like it might hurt and he could do with a new haircut and outfit. He needs to go back to his non-crap theme music. He needs a heel rival that the company hasn't taken a massive shit on. He needs time to get over his oddball sense of humour beyond "we played Skip!". He needs jobbers to clobber. He needs five. The tag was too long but it was excellent in parts. Curtis Axel's maniacal cackle after flooring Goldust is the best thing he's ever done. Maybe going full on Snitsky is the way forward for him. It's always fun to see what new trick Goldy will pull from his locker. His two heat segments were class, I particularly enjoyed the Real Americans working him over and cutting him off. I was a bit pissed that the RA's weren't in the final two but Rey/Show won me back around in the end. As solid as he is Cody will be fucked once his brother leaves. (Unless they give him more character stuff and let him talk more. Which they won't.) Where were the Uso's? Wyatt had his best showing tonight. It helped that they protected his aura by keeping him in his chair and building to his tag. I liked all his in ring verbals and spider walking. As that tiresome wise man Foley once said, this Way Bryatt fella has 'it'. Better than the first handicapped. I nearly switched off during the main but once they started brawling on the outside it got really good. All the bells and whistles were fun and I love it when the ring itself is somehow incorporated into a match. Despite everything this match actually did feel like a big deal towards the end. I didn't like the ending though. They've already thrown Orton and the belt under the bus enough as it is. They should have both taken a big spill from off the ladder so Trips could come out and sweep up the belts for himself. The angle can only get worse with all things remaining the same + Vince. It was a pretty good show though.
  23. Rey v Liger I'll have to go with Rey for now as I haven't seen enough Liger yet. I like Rey but nowhere near as much as some others do. Orton. vs HHH Orton, because he's slightly less shit and boring. These two have been rolling through my mind lately for some reason. I'll add some thoughts when I've made me mind up; Tracy Smothers or Tommy Rich? Greg Valentine or Arn Anderson?
  24. Couldn't really get into the world champ match cos we've already seen Cena beat ADR with a hurt arm before and there was zero chance of him losing tonight. Alright for what it was. I could do without ADR being in the title picture again to be honest.
