Are the matches from July 78 and 1980 from All Japan or Detroit? I want to say there were even more matches with this foursome in Detroit and Amarillo.

Well shit, I feel like I need to rewatch it then. That's so strange because when I first heard of it it had the 9/78 date. Parv has that listed in his 5 star matches list and then I found an AJ Classics disc on Lynch's list with the same date. I'll rewatch it. It should probably be on there anyway. Its Funks vs Abby/Sheik. You will know which match it is because it ends with Dory seeing red and Sheik doing an all-time epic sell job on his wrist. Bell-to-bell the 79 match is better, especially as a study in heel psychology. But as a complete spectacle and package, and as something that hits Magnum-Tully levels of transcendence, I'd always cite that 78 one, whatever the date is. It's listed in a lot of places as 9/19/78, including on Highspots DVDs and Mid-Atlantic Gateway, but the date could be 12/9/78, which I think it probably is. I have the match here somewhere, I could throw it up if anyone is interested. Just watched the 78 match on the AJ google drive. Awesome in the arch of the series. The previous year the heels had stabbed the fuck out of Terry's arm and pretty much gotten away with it. This one Dory get his hands on some scissors and gets his revenge.

Maroon is a guy who sides with whoever is paying him. He doesn't strike me as a man with any integrity, which is probably how he ended up in the wrestling business. If you want him to clear a player because you need him on the field, Maroon will clear the player. If you need him to hold a wrestler out and not clear him to set an example because you are being sued, then he can do that too. He never seems to have the athletes best interest at heart when treating athletes but rather his employers best interest.

Its Funks vs Abby/Sheik. The 78 match was on Dec 9th and it was on the 9th day of the tour. This could have lead to some of the confusion. Anyways, was Shiek hurt in the 78 match because he didn't finish the tour or was it kayfabe, seeing as how Dory stabs the fuck out of him in that match. And Elliot thoughts on Han vs Yamamoto from 6/17/95? That's probably my fav RINGS match and one of the few hyped shoot style matches not on your list. .

Does anybody else ever have a hard time distinguishing between a shoot and a work? The great shooters who had a ton of charisma and showmanship (ie Saku, Tamura, Aoki, Ogawa, etc) seem to almost be working during their shoots. Like they are trying carry their weaker opponents to make the fight more exciting. They understand the value of the fight being entertaining to the point where it seems like a work at times. At the same time those same guys who are truly exceptional have works where the work is so violent and realistic that its almost more realistic than their shoots. Anybody else ever feel this way?

Are the puroresu.tv Before the 80s Results going to factored in the selection process? That may have been the most fun project I ever took part in.

I dunno, I think "Man with Hermonica" was 3rd best entrance song, tops. And I do love Doc coming down to "Love it Loud" Also I think when Undertaker came down to Johnny Cash for the build up to WrestleMania was pretty badass.
-
Some ones that haven't been mentioned- Nakamura's current entrance Mistico "Ameno" - the tune went with the gimick and "Me Muero" - the lyirics about a hero saving the day with the Spanish guitar solo, is there a more perfect entrance for a white meat babyface Terry Funk- The Eagles' "Desperado" couldn't be more perfect for a guy 20 years removed from his world title reign and 10 years removed from his first retirement RVD- Pantera "Walk" a song about beating the shit out of somebody that was a sing along just seemed to go with a guy who was being pushed to the moon Taz- Kiss "War Machine" Same as as RVD Minoru Suzuki - "Kaze Ni Nare" Bryan Danielson- "The Final Countdown" a sing a long off the Rocky sound track, just so perfect for a the top babyface in that atmosphere Matt Riddle - Remix of Warren G's Regulate goes fits a guy who is a legit badass and is a stoner

I remember his push from that time I remember watching it more and thinking thats a guy with a lot of talent who could be very good some day than watching and thinking thats a guy who's very good. I didn't think he was really good until his Evolve run.
-
I think what went wrong with his first WWE run is that he was so young and so green. He was 22 or 23, green as goose shit and getting the biggest push for somebody that age since Randy Orton. As talented as he was/is, he just wasn't ready or as good then as he is now. I think the domestic incident was more of a symptom of what caused his push to fall apart then the cause of it. There have been podcast where people talked about how he just wasn't ready for the push was given and I think that's the case.

Off the top of my head in the last 3 years- Trauma I vs Canis Lupus - Mask vs Mask - that would be my number 1 Pretty much every Okada title match from his current title reign AJ Style's run in the 2014 and 2015 G1 AJ Style's IWGP title run AJ Style's WWE title run Naito's run in the 2016 G1 anything from the LA Park vs Rush feud Brian Kendrick's run in the CWC anything Dragon Lee vs Kamataichi Hideki Suzuki's current title run in BJW Atlantis vs Sombra Mask vs Mask anything done by the Revival anything Matt Riddle -
How did you guys do it here? one guy picks a match everybody discusses for a week or so then the guy who started the thread choses the next person to pick a match?
-
We should do a match of the week that we discuss and analyze

Live Wrestling: What are you watching, what are you going to watch?
joeg replied to Grimmas's topic in Pro Wrestling
Anybody else thinking of going and seeing Evolve 90 in a couple of weeks? I've attended a lot of rock shows or wrestling shows in weird venues. This place is in a strip mall. You have to walk through an abandoned storage space to get to the ring, then to get to the bathroom have to walk through a flea market. But Lio Rush vs Riddle and Lee vs Thather might be worth the treck. I don't get why indie companies cant run shows somewhere that's accessible to the general public, where every seat is a good seat, somewhere in/near the city, near public transportation, near I95, near restaurants, near bars. I don't understand how that is so hard. Is it that hard for promoters to find a place like the ECW Arena in every city? -
Does anybody have matchlistings for the WAR Box Set on the Real Hero drive?

I've always wanted to talk to somebody who witnessed Black Saturday first hand. Could WWF taking over that time slot been successful had they put on a better show do you think? I've seen the first show. The opening tag match with Murdoch was very good and everything else is very, very bad. If they had featured some of their nationally recognized names like Piper, Andre, Hogan, Greg Valentine, Snuka, etc on their first show instead of guys who were at the end of their career and or guys who had spent their entire careers wrestling in WWF and AWA, could it have been successful?

That might be it. I'm pretty sure that is it. Did it go broadway or did it just go really long? I saw one 4 way that summer that went broadway that had both Ki and Dragon and one that went really, really long with Ki and Dragon. Although I could swear Haas Brothers and Kendrick vs SAT was the Semi Main for one of them. And that Haas Brothers were on both shows. The thing I love about this board is I can talk about a show I went to 16 years ago and somebody here will correct me on the details.

I must be missing something on why everyone seems to hate Cody so much. He's not like top 5 in the world, but people's reactions to him come off as "eww you got WWE in my New Japan". His heel work seemed to be finding its legs in ROH (until he got babyfaced by being put in the Bullet Club but that's a whole nother discussion). I think Cody is the only guy out there right now who actually gets real heat. People legitimately hate him the way they did heels 30 years ago. Kudos to him.

I had about 300 VHS piled up on shelves in a closet. I don't recomend that as they got all sorts of fucked up. I tossed most of them a few months back. I've also got a bunch of stuff saved on older laptops and thumb drives. Saving entire years of an entire promotion onto a single drive has caused me all sorts of problems in the past.
-
Why did they get rid of King of the Ring? King of the Ring and Royal Rumble basically always did the same thing establishing contenders as the G1.
-
So who would you guys say is the best wrestler to never have that big career defining run? Every wrestler who did well in the PWO GWE had at least 1 run where they drew huge crowds, won titles, made themselves synomous with a promotion, territory, or region. Who are some guys who we consider all time greats but never really drew money or had that big title run one would associate with being an all time great.

One would think their paths would have crossed between 99 and 2003. They were working the same indies in the New York, Jersey, PA, Delaware, MD part of the country. And cage match doesn't have great records for random shithole indies like Jersey All Pro, ECWA, Maryland Champion Wrestling, random NWA affiliates, WXW, IWC, ICW, etc. In August or September 2001, I saw a 4 corner 1 hour broadway in a CYO gym in the middle of nowhere Delaware with Low Ki vs Bryan Danielson vs Christopher Daniels vs Scoot Andrews. The undercard had the Haas Brothers, the SAT, Brian Kendrick, Paul London, and the usual ECWA riff raff. There is no record of that show anywhere online. There is no film of the show. I really think that happened a lot in the indies that didn't have their own production or weren't hooked up with RF or smartmark.

Have you? I have. To the front of my mind I can think of at least 3 times I've gotten choked up watching wrestling- Kenta Kobashi's return from cancer in 07, Kobashi's retirement match, and Daniel Bryan's retirement speech. So what moments in wrestling have gotten you choked up or made you shed a tear?
