Booking Ivan Koloff to two World Titles in 1983
goodhelmet replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Armchair Booking
I was digging this fantasy booking before jdw came in and ruined it. -
Eventually, Loss and I are going to do a podcast discussing Bret Hart. Are there any Bret Hart fans out there who want to join the discussion and explain what makes him so great in your eyes. I don't want somebody to go on to defend him because we plan on heaping a bunch of praise (and criticisms) but this is an opportunity for someone who voted for Bret over Flair to sound off why you think he should be considered one of the all time greats.
-
I have half of a Tenryu super set finished. I think he is now at the point where I can make a set and not worry about new MOTYCs popping up.
-
Christian is a guy I really wouldn't mind revisiting because I have been such a fan the last few years.
-
That's high praise, Tim. Thank you!

I don't know of any yearly podcasts on Japanese wrestling. I know we did hype shows for both the All Japan and New Japan sets. The problem is I don't know if it was on a segunda caida show, Tim Noel's show or a GWW show.
-
Yeah, it's not for everyone. It's a match made for people who like to see two goliaths beat the shit out of each other.
-
Put me in the camp that agrees with your all time greats but thinks that Pirata Morgan needs to be bumped to that elite level.

Murdoch was a tag team champion and Hansen was a big opponent for both Bruno and Backlund. I think Murdoch's ability would have gotten him in the door and Hansen would easily have made it. He wouldn't be that different from JBL making it.

Shit, I didn't even think about the Patera matches or Portland. Portland is pretty freaking awesome.

Is it Fine for Someone to Develop an Opinion by Just Reading Results?
goodhelmet replied to Exposer's topic in Pro Wrestling
Ultimately, I think it depends on the source and trusting that source. I know Johnny is high on WWE (no pun intended). When I read his opinions on a show, I take that into consideration. I know there are posters here who make judgments without watching the product and continue to make negative comments without seeing it. I know not to take their opinions into account because I don't care what their opinion is (see Summerslam Thread for examples). I give credit to Dylan for watching the shows even though he is really down on the product right now. I enjoy it more than he does so I take his criticisms into account but don't countit as gospel. I am more interested in checking out things that people recommend than I am reading about somebody shitting on something. Loss doesn't watch current WWE so I don't look to him for opinions on modern wrestling. However, I trust his opinion enough that if he recommends a match, I am going to check it out. Phil Schneider and I disagree on wrestling but our opinions align 90% of the time. If Phil recommends a match, I am going to watch it or take his opinion seriously. On the AWA wrestling podcasts, Kris Z, Johnny and I agreed most of the time (consensus) even though we all had matches we disagree on. Hell, Dylan, Kris and I agreed on 90% of the matches appearing on the set. I trust these guys with divergent opinions because I have a history with them. The more interesting fascination I have is with a guy like Matt D. Matt's current obsession with Buddy Rose makes me think we have found something we can agree on. If Matt recommends a Buddy Rose match, I am going to watch it. If he recommends a Demolition match, I am bailing because I think Barry Darsow is one of a handful of worst wrestlers from the eighties and Matt's previous recommendations did nothing to change that. Having said that, at least he watches the matches!!! Now we need to work on the way he looks at lucha. -
I think that those are your answers right there with Andre-Hansen as your runaway winner. I loved the Jumbo-Murdoch matches, all of the Dundee TV matches, the Fujinami junior matches and Fuck... I like so many of those matches.

Man, I thought Christian actively sucked pre return and thought Edge was head and shoulders above him in the team and feud. I hated Christian in TNA and it wasn't until his ECW run where I thought he finally got it. Maybe a revisit will change my mind but it hadn't when I was working on the Attitude set. I think the biggest problem with Edge's spear is that he was following Rhino and Goodberg.... Two Guys who looked like they had pushed their opponents rib cage into their lungs. He doesn't have the impact or the size to execute the move convincingly.
-
We can argue about or criticize other websites/authors (and we do!) but let's stick to topic (and not the source) on this one guys!
-
I think Edge suffers from not having "Big match" appeal. His stuntman matches and gimmick matches had it. His world title runs... Not so much. I saw a Kane-Edge world title dark match live and the crowd was so unenthusiastic about the match. I saw a Cena-Swagger match in the same setting and the match felt important. Even his Mania matches didn't really have the big time feel. We can ramble about self-conscious epics but even if Edge was booked in one, it never came across as important. I don't think people lived and died with each move Edge did in a regular match. When falling off a ladder, sure.
-
Jerry, I am breaking that topic off into a separate thread because I want to explore it as a different issue.
-
I'd offer the same defense I would for Cena: he consistently has good matches. Like Loss, I'm much more concerned with a wrestler's output than a list of attributes. You could pick both guys apart on a micro level, but they manage to put it together on a macro level. I will defend Tanahashi's leg work. It's not filler, it's part of his strategy. His finisher is the High Fly Flow, and the most common counter is to put your knees up. If he damages his opponent's leg, he makes it so they can't capitalize even if they do block it. What makes the matches great and what is Tanahashi's role in making those matches great? Is he the world's most carryable wrestler with guys who are better than him?
-
I wouldn't know if he was a go-go guy or not. It was just a style I used in the example. I could have easily said brawler or high-flyer.
-
You don't say!
-
But why do you enjoy him? What is Dylan or Childs missing that makes him a good wrestler? What are his positives? Is it as simple as him being a charismatic guy? Is it because he employs a go-go never stop style? Does he draw you into the matches because of certain things he does?
-
Jastrau, I have no dog in this fight because I couldn't pick Tanahashi out of a line-up, much less tell you if he was a good wrestler. Lets ignore Dylan's posts for the moment. What about Tanahashi do you think he does well? I articulated what I thought Dick Murdoch did well in matches in the following thread. Use this as a template. It's easier to stay positive when you argue someone's strengths instead of trying to defend against criticisms because you are discussing what you enjoy about a guy instead of trying to tear him down. http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?s=&a...t&p=5523355

Bummed we are talking about technical difficulties and not the content of the show Having said that, I have no idea how any of that stuff works.

That's your example of hillbilly scum?
