Digging in the Crates #3 - Phil Schneider w/ Eric Ritz
EricR replied to goodhelmet's topic in Publications and Podcasts
I said "rosin" (yes, pronounced properly as roz-in), Phil laughed at me for not saying "resin". This did follow me calling Wahoo "Yahoo" several times, however. -
Digging in the Crates #3 - Phil Schneider w/ Eric Ritz

Throw in TomK and Phil is the only Segunda Caida guy to not want his anonymity. Also, if you listen to the podcast (which you should, Phil and I are delightful, and the easter egg is embarrassing), Phil makes fun of me for saying the word "rosin" instead of "resin". So I just wanted to leave this here: "Rosin, also called colophony or Greek pitch (Pix græca), is a solid form of resin obtained from pines and some other plants..." -
Overall I thought that was a really fun PPV. I actually enjoyed every single match on the main card. None of them were blowaway, but I enjoyed all of them. High floor, low ceiling show. 3 WAR show. Real value, unspectacular on paper.

If anyone is interested I'm doing a live blog on Segunda Caida. So far a really enjoyable show with nothing blowaway, but a couple good TV matches. Thing I've been most impressed with is the direction as they're replaying all the right things, moving on from the things they should be (like that spike DDT on Rusev that saw his head nowhere near touching the mat). http://segundacaida.blogspot.com/2015/09/wwe-night-of-champions-2015-live-blog.html

You get that in non-scripted sports all the time though. Teammates and opponents to a MAN will tell you Jerry Grote was a better defnsive catcher than Johnny Bench EVER was, and Bench IIRC held the record for most Gold Gloves behind the plate (since broken by Ivan Rodriguez), but because he is dwarfed offensively, doesn't get a sniff at the HOF, and Bench is considered one of the top 3-5 finest catchers in baseball history. Teammates and opponents rave about how great Gil Hodges was, and that he should belong in the Hall, yet for whatever reason whomever is voting when his time comes around to be on the ballot sees his stats as just not measuring up to any kind of standard. I've never heard that about Grote, but that's interesting because no actual fielding data that is out there shows him being better than Bench at anything defensively. Every single defensive stat you can track, Bench crushes him. If a defense wiz like Bob Boone or Brad Ausmus don't get any hall attention, Grote had zero chance.

But that would also be kind of pointless because we all know there are thousands of horrible non-trained "wrestlers" who somehow got access to a ring and filmed it. Just like in a worst movies discussion nobody would count my friend Randy's action movie that he filmed on a Saturday behind our high school gymnasium. It's more interesting to talk about guys who actually dedicated real time to pro wrestling, who were then given an actual platform by people hoping to make money. Of course Brian Christopher isn't the worst pro wrestler ever. Nobody agreed with that weirdo.

Kendrick told me a story years and years ago about Michaels, saying in TWA when it was time for them to work on their characters and figure out things like entrance music, Shawn said he wanted to think of the PERFECT entrance music for American Dragon. Kendrick said everybody was joking that Shawn was going to come up with something obvious and lame like "Born in the USA" and Dragon thought Shawn had something bigger in mind. Next day Shawn shows up and says he was stuck on what Dragon's entrance should be, kept thinking long and hard about it, and finally the PERFECT song came to him: Born in the USA. Kendrick said everybody in the room started laughing and Shawn had no clue why that was their reaction.

How Much Bullshit is the PWI 500(full list below)
EricR replied to dkookypunk43's topic in Pro Wrestling
Bay Area guy Boyce LeGrande once made the list 3 straight years ----- without working a single match that entire time, or being involved in any way with wrestling. This year has been the most active year of his career and he's not on it now. -
Cage wouldn't have that body if he got signed by WWE.
-
Yeah it's weird to hate the Bucks but then think Daniels/Kazarian's shitty offense is what saved the segment.

People always talk about how lame Cena's "poopy" humor is on promos, but WCW had Hollywood Hogan cut a promo on the Giant where he said "Fe Fi Fo Fum, the Giant is a big dum dum." Both promotions viewed "PG" as "written for 6 year olds".

When is KVE vs. Kamala from? I LOVE Kamala vs. DVE from 1983, and I'd be curious about a KVE match.

Often forgotten periods of a wrestlers career...
EricR replied to Sidebottom's topic in Pro Wrestling
I remember really liking a Mr. Perfect/Tommy Dreamer match. Maybe from Sunday Night Heat? -
THAT is a 73 word sentence. Wow.

I think Hogan also made a large tactical error by playing up his own suicide attempts, and how Tatyana Ali "saved" him. I think he was aiming for a sympathetic story that got a lot of attention, but then when people saw how relevant he still was they would all want the Hulkster back. It did get attention, but I think instead people saw him as a sad old man who was winding down his days. I personally did not feel sympathetic, but remember thinking when that story broke "Oh man this is not the reaction he was hoping for".

Around that time he also got a win in a fun Worldwide match over Elix Skipper (who may have still been Skip Over at that point). And after that Prince match *poof* he was gone, until the Daniels match which I think had the unfortunate Daniels moonsault botch to boot. Should that really be a knock on him though? I mean, I understand why it is. but very few wrestlers are still as good after 15 years. I see how it comes off that way, but I wasn't using it as a knock on Bigelow. More how fascinating it is that a guy got as good as he did so quickly, and maintained that level - nothing more nothing less - for the duration of his career. I always loved little touches Bigelow would bring to matches, he especially seemed good at covering for blown spots, which was a nice skill to have in ECW.

http://segundacaida.blogspot.com/2015/06/premier-ix-6715-review.html Watched the full Premier show, and really loved it. I've seen many of these guys live a dozen times, and this was the best most of them have ever looked. I don't know if there's something in the water at this venue, but man it was just really obvious the little - better - things these guys were doing at this show vs. the APW show many of them were on one week later. Looks like I'll have to try the 2 hour drive to Gilroy for their next show.

I dunno, I saw two of his NJPW tags from last year and he looked horrible. I found both things I've written about him over the past year: From a 2013 six man: "And boy, Lance Archer. Even in limited time the guy just looked like junk. He's so unnatural in the way he gets in position and throws guys in turnbuckles or ropes. There is no subtlety with him getting where he needs to fall. Nakamura kicks him in the face but he needs to be in the turnbuckles and ends up falling diagonally to his side to get to them, in a way nobody would ever fall after being kicked. Later he needs to throw someone into the buckles, is out of position to make it look convincing, so walks all the way around him to properly whip him. There are just a shocking number of mini time stand still moments with this guy." And from the 6/21/14 tag vs. TenKoji: "I remember a time a decade ago when Lance Archer was a total embarrassment, truly one of the worst wrestlers in the world to appear on my television. I'm in my mid 30s now, I'm a homeowner, and Lance Archer is still a total embarrassment, truly one of the worst wrestlers in the world currently appearing on my television. Man there is not one thing he does well in the ring. He takes offense like he's scared to be hit, always preparing more for the bump he's about to take. His offense is just terrible. We - me the author and you the reader - we know what moves he's supposed to be doing just because we know the movements. But I have no clue what a first time viewer would think Archer was doing half the time. At one point he did a standing splash and Rachel actually had no clue what he was attempting. It's like he was making a weird human tent over him. He just sort of jumped up and landed on all fours, but no part of him came close to touching Kojima. Even worse he awkwardly yelled "Let's get CRAZY!!!" before hitting it. You have never seen anything less crazy that Lance Archer's standing splash. Out of all the things to possibly yell to the crowd..." It is quite possible I've seen two very bad examples. But those two examples certainly confirmed every single one of my existing opinions on him.

The young WOW ref took a crazy over the top bump to the floor every damn week. Was his name Josh...something?

But I love my Dean Stockwell painting...

Yes! I saw this thread and hopped in just to crap all over Red Shoes. It was I who spouted all the hatred towards him. God how I loathe him. It's as if, during any of his guest ref gigs, Shawn Michaels chose to just be a subtle Red Shoes. This guy is the pits and completely tries to outshine the workers constantly. It's all insult to injury as nothing he ever does even makes sense within kayfabe either, just regularly watching interference without doing anything, but then intervening while two combatants are having a perfectly legal strike exchange. This guy is easily the worst.

I'm intrigued by the Hoyt match as he has looked really terrible in...well, anything I've ever seen of him. I would never describe him as a hoss. His offense looked really bad and his crowd work always seems really misguided.

Phil and I have talked about how Bigelow was very good within just a few months of starting, and 15 years later was the exact same level of good. A lot of the worked shoot guys could make sense here, as people like Ishikawa and Greco look good as far back as you can find footage. Cassandro is tough as his taped footage is so spotty. There are several year periods that are missing. Mike Modest seems like an odd name to toss out since he hasn't been on the national scene in well over a decade but he was the real deal when he started working CA indies, getting to work WWF job duty with just a few weeks of training form Roy Shire (which he said consisted of some guys messing around in a ring while Shire watched TV in his house) and being so good that his moniker became "The Natural One" after that. He had a real great mind for what does and doesn't work in a wrestling match, and had great taste.

Criterion not only released Pink Flamingos on laserdisc, but also John Waters' Polyester, and would have gladly released then and more of his films on DVD if they had been able to retain the rights.

Went to the APW show this weekend, wrote it up: http://segundacaida.blogspot.com/2015/06/apw-61215-war-at-shore-road-report.html Saw the PREMIER show got posted with a bunch of the same guys on it (but it was in Gilroy, which is 2 hours away from me, as opposed to the APW show in South SF, about an hour). I think I'll check it out and write that up too, since I've seen these guys more than most on here.
