I love Slater. He's been a favorite of mine since I saw him in Mid South back in the 80's. My favorite weird WTF? WWF gimmick involved him, as well. In 86 when people were leaving Watts in droves to go to WWF, Slater was brought in as "The Rebel" Dick Slater. He'd come down to the ring waving a huge Confederate flag....and he was a Babyface. Needless to say, it didn't get over in a WWF that was still Northeast based and was in the middle of the expansion.

It's not revisionism if it's based on how most people feel. And the idea that Ole is the victim of some sort of conspiracy between Vince and the Mulligan family is Oliver Stone level wacky.

The general thought is Ziggler should cash in on a face, not a dominant heel. But I can imagine them running with Del Rio after that match and the crowd reaction.

Maybe looking back, sure. But at the time we all thought Ole sucked, and Windham was a perfect choice. They looked more kick ass and held all the gold. So at the time everyone felt that this was the best Horsemen.

Eventually the HBWO would get too big and have too many splinter groups, though.

Oh yeah, it's not WWE "revisionism" at all. Speaking as someone who was a fan at the time, we all thought "this Horsemen group is the best, they hold all the belts."

I saw him during the Glass Spider tour where he reinvented himself into the most boring concert I've ever been to.

Ha, I was gonna suggest this at DVDVR and here. Great minds and all that. Now I just need to get my guys shit together to start doing shows again.

Actually, Gallagher was never as "one note" as people think. Each of his specials were full of completely different material, a lot of it really good and intelligent/ subversive. He just knew that the audience wanted the Sledge-O-Matic bit at the end and he'd deliver it. But even that he'd change and adapt for each special. And the whole Gallagher 2 deal with his brother was some pretty subversive shit at heart. With Carlin, you can trace the entire evolution of his act over the years from 60's nightclub comic, to gentle hippie who still challenged the establishment with the "Seven Words" bit, (and he would fall back on that bit and adapt it over the years), to cokehead who did nothing but wordplay jokes that lacked any heart that his early stuff had. Then as he got older, he got progressively angrier, and when his wife died he said "Fuck it I'm gonna speak nothing but the truth no matter how much it may upset people." I'm wondering what wrestler one would compare with The Grateful Dead in the way John did Flair and Bruce. Given that the Dead never repeated a performance. No two shows since circa 1969 had the same set list, but certain songs would disappear for awhile, then come back, new ones would come and some would go, and improv was key.

RAW tonight was pretty kick ass altogether, but yeah...I LOVED Rock owning Punk. Unlike the last time, Punk's "Pipe Bomb" stuff was "shooty" in a way that made you want to see him get punched in the face, not go online and jerk off about how "He's shooting what we think". I was chomping at the bit for Rock to come out and own him, and he did. And it worked so well, Punk was never buried as a threat, just owned verbally by THE FUCKING ROCK. Great god damned stuff.

It's actually not quite rare. The Snuka/ Muraco feud was full of crazy hate. I know Muraco isn't the most popular guy around here, but everything leading up to the big cage match was intense. Speaking of Snuka, the Snuka/ Piper feud was insane. You really felt these two guys hated each others guts and wanted to kill each other. Kevin Von Erich vs. Chris Adams was a feud that felt totally real. Former friends who now want to rip each others hearts out. The brief Bruno vs. Savage stuff while Steamboat was "out of action" thanks to Savage felt full of hate. When Bruno snapped on Savage with "You're PROUD? YOU SLIME!!!!" and then old man Bruno went to whoopin' some ass...man, shit was ON.

Sheamus = Irish Mick Foley ? Not exactly....

There was also lotsa fun shit like the Miz/ Balls feud where Miz has Extreme Expose as his valets, and Kelly Kelly starts to fall for Balls Mahoney. That was a fun little storyline. And all the Miz and Morrison matches that led up to them becoming a team, them as a dominant team, as well as every Dirt Sheet episode.

I'll tell you this, Bret's book is by far the most "re-readable" and my absolute favorite of any of the wrestling books I've read. It's perfect for just picking up, opening any page, and immediately being drawn into some story. I always enjoyed Bret Hart matches. That Boston one with Steamboat was one of those "Hey, I taped wrestling the other night, you gotta see this" memorable matches from when I was 14. He'd just turn me off years later with all the bitter "Flair sucks, Memphis wrestling sucks, My Dad's promotion was the greatest promotion ever, Shawn and Hunter ruined wrestling, etc, etc, etc, stuff." I get where the guy's coming from and totally understand why he'd be bitter and why he'd feel that way, but he was wrong about a lot of stuff, at least in my opinion. But, as someone who at the time only watched RAW and the PPV's, the deal about him only shining for PPV Main Events? It may be true, I don't know, and I don't care because those Main Events were what I was watching and he was always good/ great in them.

This is very, very true. Shawn's gimmick is "great wrestler" and it's a narrative the WWE has gone out of their way to push. Shawn is a guy who is important to the history of the promotion, but nowhere near as important as you would think based on the way the hype machine presents him. Isn't the term they use "The Greatest In Ring Performer Of All Time"? or something like that? I always took that as them saying HBK was the best all-around performer/ entertainer, not "best wrestler."

According to Bauer, or one of the ex writers I heard on an Alverez show, Vince was going back and forth on putting the belt on Rey all the way up to showtime at that Mania. And since he's been champ 2 more times since then, sells a ton of merch, and is an actual draw...the idea that Vince has a grudge against him seems kinda off.

I re read the whole thing, too. It was like a Nam flashback.

I'm sure there's more. Yeah, nowhere in there does it say Khali was a good wrestler. It says that a Giant deformed guy who looks like a monster is an attraction a lot of people want to see. And the point that most fans go to shows to see characters and not "moves" is true.
