Oh I give the guy all the credit in the world for getting himself over. I just personally think he kinda stinks.
-
I seriously doubt a "significant portion" of the WWE audience are the types of people who agree with the idea that Americans are all fat, lazy, and entitled.
-
Fine, I just watched it again and it was "Ryder". I honestly didn't pick it up watching live. I guess my overwhelming feeling of "Bleh." about Ryder overtook my hearing. Anyhoo, I thought the show was just top to bottom great. Even the Divas match had a good story behind it. Eve makes sure the "dancer" wins the Battle Royal so she has an easy defense, said dancer shows skill in the ring and frustrates the heel. In the end the experienced heel wins, but after being made to look like a fool for taking the dancing girl lightly. The match wasn't much, but the story was good stuff.

Ok, fine. I still have a problem picturing Ryder in his LI stereotype goofy LI Meathead shit getting cheers in Brooklyn. But who cares? What a fucking great show.
-
Brooklyn is on Long Island. I'm aware. I'm also aware of the fact that that people from Brooklyn tend to dislike people from the LI.

Truth tweeted this pic of his knee injury after thee Cesaro match
-
I was pretty sure the crowd was chanting "we want Ricardo", not Ryder during the set up bit for the six man. Why would a Brooklyn crowd be behind a Long Island guy as a hometown hero? That's nuts. In no way do Brooklyn folks think a LI guy is "hometown." I'll go back and listen again, but the idea that a Brookyn crowd would be all about a Long Island guy is crazy talk. I actually thought JTG was gonna be the partner for a second. "Brooklyn, Brooklyn.."

Wrestling in unusual contexts
Johnny Sorrow replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Pro Wrestling Mostly
The match was actually from the Meadowlands across the river. -
Well what he's really doing is just calling everyone fat, lazy, and entitled. Just adding on "You Americans are...". It's working for him.
-
It's the whole "people who think Americans are assholes but Americans don't care" deal. Like the USA/ Canada stuff they've done over the years. It was always the Canadian fans all behind their guys and Americans going "We don't hate Canada. We don't even think about Canada." And Cesaro does the whole "douchey European" thing so well without being French. So he can be a tough guy and not Rene' Dupree.
-
I'll tell ya what they have being doing right lately and that's Antonio Cesaro. He's been awesome in his matches. He's committed to the character. His promos have been great. And now they seem solidly behind the guy. They've made the US Belt important again after god knows how long. They've quickly gone from "Aksana's boyfriend who played Rugby" to "Old school throwback tough guy with uncanny strength and skill" mixed with a great "Anti- America/ Obnoxious European" that isn't a bad stereotype. He's on the road to the main event someday the right way. Granted, we'll see if they jump the gun and put him in the main event too soon as a test as they've been prone to do in recent years, ala Swagger, but right now he's doing great at the perfect level for him right now. I'm also totally digging the repackaged Wade Barrett. He's been great in the ring and his mic work is just the best.

[1994-08-24-WCW-Clash of the Champions XXVIII] Ric Flair vs Hulk Hogan
Johnny Sorrow replied to Loss's topic in August 1994
Because he was the most famous ring announcer of all time already at this point, and this point being around the height of his fame amongst people who didn't even watch boxing. WCW probably didn't give a shit about his mistakes just so long as they had him to seem more mainstream and big time. Don't get me wrong, I always hated him as a wrestling ring announcer but the fact remains that his fame superseded his fuck-ups in the eyes of management.- 22 replies

Not so much a con, but I love it. Jerry Lee Ralph was a Memphis mainstay, and I guess he used to tell people he was King Kong Bundy. Live and die with the gimmick, man. RIP

Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 3

Yep, I loved Brother Love too. So slimmy. I thought Brother Love was great too. His purpose was to be a house organ for the heel elite of the WWF. Ted Dibiase bribed officials to get him his time slot. Bruce Pritchard was only slim during his Belushi level days of doing blow. Hey, like I said. I was in my early twenties at the time and Brother Love was just fucking annoying and stupid to me. Granted, now knowing that he had a timeslot thanks to Dibiase, ok. That part of my hatred of the character is gone. But I go back and watch that era of WWF now, and I can get past a lot of what I hated about it. But not him. It's still just annoying. But that's me. I still think Paul Bearer and Taker from the time is annoying and embarrassingly stupid, and when I read the old Observers that go on about how awesome Pringle is in the role I scratch my head. It's a total age thing on my part, I know. -

Ok, well there you go. I never knew that. That was always my problem, "Why does this guy have an interview show?" Interview shows are supposed to be hosted by wrestlers, managers, or ex-wrestlers. And believe me, I "got" that they were spoofing the Televangelist craze. Shit, back then we used to get high and prank call the PTL club and laugh at Benny Hinn. And I still can't stand the character. I was at a point where I hadn't watched wrestling in a few years, since Spring of 88. I would turn on WWF every now and then and there was so much I just fucking hated. Brother Love was like the #1 thing that would make me change the channel. Warrior and Taker, too. Just the overall cartoony/ it's a kid's show vibe turned me off. It wasn't until one Saturday morning I was flipping around and saw Heenan holding the NWA Big Belt on a WWF TV show and heard the name "Ric Flair" that I jumped back in as a regular fan. -

I'm watching Will's Dusty comp and I'm at the WWF stage. Holy fuck, Brother Love was just the worst thing ever. Around this time I was at a point where I only watched wrestling every now and then and it was usually WCW because I hated the Ultimate Warrior and anytime I saw Brother Love I'd have to turn it off. WCW also had Clash shows and Saturday Nights. Brother Love didn't make any sense on top of being fucking annoying. Why would the WWF have a fake evangelist do an interview show? Why does he paint his face red? What's the fucking point with this character? God, I almost fast forwarded the fucking dvd. -
When exactly was Edge's big drawing period according to Meltzer, btw? Cause I remember him headlining house shows against Taker around 2008, (I was at one) and the draw there seemed to be a mixture of Taker and the name "WWE". Honestly, based solely on the house shows I've been to around here over the last 6 years the only two names that were definitely draws based on the fans I saw around me were Cena and Rey.

I do remember that time when they were all in the ring as a "normal family" and Dustin was trying to get her to say "Goldust" and the poor kid was just crying and scared.

Shit, you remember all that off the top of your head? All I remember from that whole deal was thinking "Cool, Goldust is back to teach this guy a lesson."

So it hit me last night that Dean Ambrose really looks like Ted DiBiase pre beard and feathered hair. -

Point being, someone in WWE creative associates being a janitor with being homeless, and that's wacky and out of touch. It's not like they're saying, "She was homeless, lived in a car, but got a job as a janitor and worked hard to get to where she is". It's "She had it so hard being homeless and being a janitor!" Maybe it's cause I associate the job with, as mentioned above, the school janitors who always seemed to have a job for life and made a decent living, my pal growing up who's Dad was a janitor at Lipton Tea and they were in no way poor. There ya go. -
Ah, the Big Show/ Bossman stuff was hilarious.

Podcast material, but I'm gonna steal the "Maybe with some guys it's just how they "feel" in terms of presentation. That's another aspect that can be explored in the thread I suppose, though I don't know where to go with that." gimmick for mine. "That is another aspect that can be explored in the thread I suppose, though I do not know where to go with that."
