Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 3
Johnny Sorrow replied to Loss's topic in Megathread archive
People who've never done it assume it's a low-skill minimum wage job only ex-cons can do. Which actually leads to what really baffles me. Ok. Maybe being a plumber in West Texas in the late 50's/ early 60's didn't pull the bank it does now. I can get that, and Dusty's so fucking awesome that it works. But who in WWE Creative, when looking at AJ's real life story to use as her character, thought that her being a janitor was just as sad and rough as her being homeless and living in a car? "AJ has had a tough life! She was homeless, lived in cars and cheap motels, and had to take a job as a JANITOR. A job that pays well and probably has benefits!" If the third part of that was "and had to suck cock under the off ramp" then sure, that's hard times -
So, the Attitude Era dvd "Sgt. Pepper" cover has more content in the infolds. Say what you will, but that's the most thought they've put into a DVD cover art in a long time. I bought it. The documentary is ok. My favorite part is Mark Henry telling the story about how he went to Vince to ask about the "hand" birth, because he didn't get it. And Vince says to him "IT'S A HAND! HAHAHAHA!" and Mark just shrugs his shoulders. The matches on the set are generally a lot of fun. One thing that totally stands out is how freakin' rabid the crowds were. There's a Austin/ Taker vs Mankind/ Kane vs The NAO vs. The Rock and D-Lo Brown match that's both a lot of fun and the crowd is just insane. Oh, and according to the DVD, The Attitude Era was from 1997 through WCW ending.

So, as I sit here after two days of suffering with norovirus, I'm watching RAW on dvr. They're going on about how AJ was poor growing up, so far as to where she once worked as a janitor to get by. Since when is being a janitor some terrible thing? Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure janitors make a decent living. It's like how I'd always laugh when Dusty would go on about being the son of a plumber. My buddy Brian is a plumber and he's a wealthy dude. -
I'm not saying he should be in the HOF, and honestly I don't give a flying rat's ass about Dave Meltzer's Hall Of Fame. (Yes, I'm aware this thread is about that but indulge me ). I'm just saying that Sting was always presented as the face of WCW and therefore the fans who grew up watching WCW will always feel that he is. And to me, that feeling mixed with the promotion of that feeling as being so makes it so. Shit, he was so much of the face of the company at one point, they actually had his fucking face above the entrance ramp. The only time he wasn't was when Hogan came in, and even then Sting was "The Franchise" of WCW. And let's face it, a lot of die hard WCW fans resented and hated Hogan, despite PPV buys and early Nitro ratings. It's why Sting as the ultimate face during the NWO stuff worked. He was THE WCW guy, he felt betrayed, but still came back to carry the flag of WCW. (Granted, I personally wanted the Horsemen to take out the NWO, and eventually they basically did years later, but by then it didn't mean shit.)

Wrestling in unusual contexts

Speaking of Stephen King, in the "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill" segment of Creepshow, he's watching Bob Backlund wrestle one of the Samoans. -
The numbers and all that stuff are one thing. But from the perspective of the fan, Sting was the face of WCW. It has more to do with emotions than the numbers.

If you haven't caught the latest episode of "The Soup" that features a bunch of WWE folks, do it. It's fucking hilarious. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXJ81WEYp8g -
Magnum would have gone on to be a huge star either in NWA/ WCW or WWF. The guy had "it", man. A good looking dude in the tiniest of tiny pants who also came off as the baddest motherfucker alive. He had appeal to the chicks and the dudes in a way not a lot of guys have.

I loved the match against Taker at Mania. When it started I was all, "Yeah, no way are they gonna have Orton win" and by the end I was freaking out cause I was thinking he WAS gonna win, and I lost myself in the match, going nuts, kayfabe.

So Colt Cabana was on Marc Maron's WTF show http://www.wtfpod.com/podcast/episodes/epi...4_-_colt_cabana It's really, really good. Maron's been one of my favorite comics since the early 90's, and him explaining how he came to "get" wrestling is some good shit. -

I'd say it's more of a "Brodus just isn't that good and should be where he is now" deal rather than "Easily replaceable chick can't be punished for dui so Brodus is a mid carder now" deal. If anything, Brodus' deal with Show was step #1 in them successfully repackaging Show as a killer. They built up Brodus beyond his skill, then fed him to Show to help Show, and now he's settled into a mid card role as the fun guy who dances with the kids, but an still kick some ass.
-
Ok, "punishing" Clay cause one of his chicks got in trouble? As if they couldn't find another hot chick who can dance so Brodus gets "punished"? Come on. It's more of a "We established a guy strong, and then he's settled down into the mid card role he was always intended for." deal. They needed to start Brodus as huge as they did at first so he can be in the spot he's in now. It's just what they do now with certain guys.
-
It looked to me as if Brodus went for the suplex too close to the ropes so Tensai just flapjacked himself. Oh, and the PPV was really good. Not great, but really good.

Controversy creates ca$h! I was disappointed. I was thinking it'd be ink of Romney's actual face. Like those creepy baby face tats I've seen. That shit can be fixed into something else. Shit, fill in the middle with white and toss in a few stars around it and he's the next Indy All American patriot dude. -
Exactly. That's what had me going "what the fuck?", not two heels heeling on Lawler in a segment he probably suggested.

I just thought about this video for the first time in years. George Thorogood doing Willie and The Hand Jive with some of the rasslin' thrown in. -
I do know some people who were wrestling fans as teens during the Attitude era who grew up and got into real fights, sure. But most UFC fans I know don't like it cause they got tired of wrestling. Most like it cause they're tired of boxing.
