  1. actually a pretty interesting discussion of Starrcade 95 on Scott Keith's blog. The build to the show was very strange with all the hype being done on the syndicated and weekend shows and basically nothing on Nitro. The show was also held on a Wednesday which had to hurt the number. Of course in retrospect we know that Bischoff didn't see Starrcade as the biggest show of the year because he believed people would be distracted by the holiday season and less likely to purchase a PPV. He saw Halloween Havoc as the biggest show of the year. But the cynic in me is thinking the hype was piss poor because Hogan wasn't on the show and he wanted to make sure the show did a poor number to trick execs into thinking he was still the man
  2. when Dave was talking about the History of Mania DVD on WOL he said that 4 and 5 "well, didn't lose money". That's where I got it from
  3. true just wondering how the show ended up just breaking even when it did all those buys
  4. So what's the deal with WM 5? Dave had said in the past that the show "didn't lose money" but in the Savage obit he says it was the highest gate for a wrestling show ever at that time (and wouldn't be broken till 2000) edit: ok it was most PPV buys and not live gate but Dave has always said the show wasn't that big in the past. Did Vince have to pay Trump a ton to hold the show?
  5. I'm 31 and yeah I'll concur it's nice not to feel so old at a wrestling board!
  6. "Have a go at Steph"? "Everybody else did"? I had no idea Oliver hated women so much. Anyway, if this is what "Oliver knows," then way did Dave act like that was the key to the Stephanie story being true if he's using her alleged promiscuity to say it's NOT why Vince didn't want Savage back and was weirdly personal about it? Also, it's not the first time I've heard someone make the "Stephanie was a slut in college in Boston" claim (someone else who publicly reported something about another female wrestling personality being considered promiscuous but told me this privately) but I never really took that person at face value, or the claim being relevant to anything if it actually was true. there's of course the story of Bruce Prichard talking about Steph's "promiscuity" to Lawler that Lawler relayed on his website in 2001. I guess it was talked about at Titan Towers from 94-98 when she was at BU Stephanie did an interview (it was I think 2000, can't remember the source) where she said she was "kind of a party girl" in college suprisingly this didn't come up in the Stern interview in 02 (it probably would have if Howard knew) I'm half wondering now if all the slut stuff from 1999-2002 was a rib on her (probably not but it's the wrestling business) and who cares anyway (if true). A very attractive rich girl was wild in college. Like thats never happened before. edit: and there was that report I think 2 years ago on some radio show where someone said they saw Steph smoke pot all night long at a party at BU She seemed pretty baked when they interviewed her for that Andre the Giant bio on A& E and that fits the time frame. But again this happened 15+ years ago
  7. been looking all weekend. Some awesome stuff here
  8. Completely agree I've read some stuff on other boards today (not much but still a few posters) saying stuff like "Come on you didn't know him... Wrestling fans should be used to this... He lived an exciting life... You're too emotional...." no way. This was Randy the fucking "Macho Man" Savage that died. It IS different
  9. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2_zdD-OOKE..._embedded#at=74 "Lutomum maximum" "Lawd have mercy on the common man" still as funny as it was in 1996
  10. IIRC, the WWF was getting complaints from parental groups about the gimmick so they toned it down a bit. The company received a lot of flack from those groups for taking a more adult approach in 91/92 ie Savage snake bite angle,Taker locking Warrior in coffin, etc a few years later they were getting complaints about the "serial killer" undertones of the Doink gimmick so they hastily turned him face
  11. Danny Spivey being in the running to play the Kane character in 1997. It came down to him and Glenn Jacobs (Spivey was 45 years old at the time) Angel of Death as the Black Scorpion
  12. so apparently Bryan made a comment that the internet takes it too easy on WWE booking because it is overshadowed by how bad TNA is and how bad WCW was. agree/disagree? here's the quote (from DVDVR)
  13. Bo was a truly great RB whose footbal career was over by 1990 but was always overrated as a baseball player. Decent to good power and great speed but terrible plate discipline
  14. Apparently WWE had Michael Hayes manage Tyson Kidd tonight at the tapings for his Superstars match. That's..interesting
  15. when I was a Senior in High School (96-97) there was a group of kids who sang Simon and Garfunkel songs at school functions and the like
  16. I was the one who brought up Dusty on the booking committee in 98. I could have sworn he briefly had the book in summer of 98 with the Meng push and the battle royal at Road Wild being his ideas probably getting confused with 99 though
  17. Orton is actually getting pushed harder than Cena now (and has been). He basically wins all his matches clean and it takes massive interference for him to do a job. If he does job he immediately gets his win back. He won all of the Punk matches clean, won the title clean and Miz and Sheamus were unable to pin him during their reigns when Orton was challenging. WWE hasn't pushed a wrestler this strong in years. Maybe Austin during the late 90s. Maybe Brock but that was short term
  18. IIRC, Super Brawl 99 did a pretty monster buyrate for Flair v Hogan. It was the David Flair nonsense and the silliness of the double turn at Uncensored that destroyed whatever momentum they had edit: yup SuperBrawl 99 did a 1.10 buyrate (St Valentine's Day Massacre did a 1.21. Man a lot of people bought pro wrestling PPVs that month) Superbrawl 2000 did a .10 oh WCW
  19. feel glad for Christian 13 years is a long time to wait to be champion (not counting TNA or ECW titles)
  20. Cena wins the title Net about to explode
  21. In a suprising move, Michelle McCool is apparently leaving WWE Must have to do with Taker
  22. According to PWI Punk is dating Beth Phoenix. Phoenix moving to RAW might have been to appease him btw, watching some old OVW on you tube and my God was Beth smoking hot back then. She had the look that they love and was great as a ditzy/naive sex pot blonde. I have no idea why they wanted her to change her look that drastically. The female terminator gimmick was effective but I enjoy her OVW gimmick and Santino stuff much more
  23. I seem to recall a story making it online a few years back of Johnny and his wife approaching a female wrestler in TNA about doing a 3 way. I can't remember but I think it was Shelley Martinez
  24. the reaction to Mark Henry getting another push should be fun
