Loss
Talk about it here.
Loss
DIRTY WHITE BOY! One thing I'll say about all four of these guys is that they all look like they would have fit right in working in WCW. DWB in particular was such a good worker and talker - perhaps the biggest casualty of the territories dying. Aside from Jarrett/Travis, my favorite USWA match of the year. Post-match, Ronnie P. Gossett takes out his frustrations over "Porky" chants by dropping splashes on the babyfaces. Not sure I need to see a manager this physically dominant, but whatever. Really, really good match. PeteF3
I actually like the fact that Gossett's sheer size makes him formidable even though he's not a wrestler. Plus he needed Jarrett and Travis immobilized for every move he did. The match itself seemed a little rushed, especially at the ending, but the action before that was all good. I like Tatum's emo crying act but sometimes it's good to see him tone that down as he does here. Anthony and Jarrett is a singles match that needed to happen. soup23
Agree more with Peter that this was not my favorite match of the Texas stuff but it was really good. Billy Joe plays a great babyface and I love everyone from the crowd to the announcers taking shots at Gossett. I still want to see DWB in a match though where his performance blows me away. shoe
I think DWB is a good worker, and a great talker. It's funny to look at Cactus doing interviews, because in Cactus's book Cornette suggested tagging with DWB so DWB could carry the interviews. I thought it was a good tag that was rushed. My favorite spot was Tatum going for the helicopter tag.
Kevin Ridge
I liked Travis as a heel so lets see how he does as a good guy. Pringle refers to Gossett as porky. Gossett getting more physically involved. They cut to the wrong camera at the finish but Jarrett runs Anthony into Gossett. Jarrett practically bumps himself for Gossett’s awful clotheslines. He then does a couple fall over splashes where he gets no distance off the ground. I can’t believe they let him get so physically involved. Making him out like he is Earthquake. Cox
Great tag team match. Travis is another guy who was hurt by the territories dying, as I could see him having a good career as a journeyman working all over the south with healthy, vibrant territories to work. Instead, he mostly worked Memphis and outlaws around Memphis (actually, surprised that Cornette never brought him in). Damn shame, as he's as good as a face here as he was as a heel earlier in the set. Â Have to say, I HATE how much heat they put on Gossett post-match. Not only is he not a worker, but he's not even athletic enough to have a manager's match, like Cornette. They put all of this heat on him, and it's very unlikely he ever gets his comeuppance. I'd rather see DWB and Tatum get the heat than the unathletic non-worker.
Cox
Oh, and to build on Loss' point about DWB, in Foley's book, he mentioned that Cornette was trying to pitch the booking committee on the idea of bringing in Anthony to team with Cactus and be managed by Brian Hildebrand. I really wish that had happened as it would have been really interesting. My guess is they wouldn't have been pushed at all, but I bet they would have had some good TV matches. Tim Evans
Travis was pretty much in Jail during SMW's run so that's why he wasn't brought in.
Cox
That...does not surprise me.
TravJ1979
Gossett is a great manager, but his splashes looked terrible, it's basically him tripping and falling. Â What was the cause of Billy Joe Travis' face turn? Was it on the yearbook and I missed it or was it not available? I see him heeling with Von Erich over the Texas Title and the next thing I know he does a run in to save the babyface's from a beat down. garretta
I might be among the few, but I didn't care for this one much. The camera work was sloppy, particularly at the finish, the announcing was lazy (Craig calling a flying bodypress a big splash was at least in the ballpark, but Percy calling forearms to the back punches in the stomach just shouldn't happen on a taped show) and while the guys all did their night's work, they were overshadowed by Gossett. Â Look, I'm no prude when it comes to managers getting physically involved, especially if they've been wrestlers. The idea bookers seemed to have where all former wrestlers who managed immediately forgot their ring training was total nonsense, and one of the few ideas I was glad to see Vince ignore (at least for the most part). But unless Gossett's actually training for a career in the ring, the idea that he can beat up Jarrett and Travis as badly as he did, even with help, is nonsensical. Throwing clotheslines, splashes, and even an avalanche? What was next, demanding a five-count on Jarrett like King Kong Bundy? Â This isn't even a situation like in SMW, where Cornette was his own top heel, the only one whom he could trust not to leave, and he took most of the heat in any given angle he was involved in on himself so someone would be there to take the final beating when the time came (which it always did). Gossett had two perfectly good heels to do his dirty work for him, but whoever booked this slop decided to be different. All I can say is that this better have led to a Jarrett/Gossett match that didn't make the set, or Jeff's credibility in Dallas is shot. Beaten to a pulp by Porky Pig? Come on, Jerry (Jarrett), just how did your son piss you off? Couldn't he have simply apologized? Â Texas has been hot lately, but this is a pretty significant blip on the radar. drew wardlaw
Okay, I think I remember now that Billy Joe turned face in Texas, but was still a heel in Memphis, if I have that right? He's good here as a face too! Did I hear that his nickname is "Mr. Hot Property"? I'm really digging John Tatum, I say it in every thread. He's a really interesting character. dawho5
Travis works completely different, but just as effectively as a face. I'll echo him as a lost worker. Fun tag and I get that Gossett is big. But let's lay off him getting so involved.
