donsem43
Horrible news... https://www.reddit.com/r/SquaredCircle/comments/3m3mpa/akira_hokuto_diagnosed_with_breast_cancer/ Akira Hokuto took to her blog to explain that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer and will be going into surgery tomorrow. It is a bad case that will require her entire right breast to be removed. She will also have to be under observation for the next few months to make sure the cancer hasn't spread. jushin muta liger
Sad news indeed. Its weird timing because I've been doing a personal project watching Hokuto's career and this hit me out of the blue this morning. Prayers for her. ohtani's jacket
That was a really emotional blog post she wrote. Her diagnosis doesn't sound so good. Definitely the biggest fight of her life.
jdw
The Google translation is gutting to read. I can't imagine how it reads in the native language. :.(
Bix
Has the Japanese stigma against talking about cancer decreased over the years or is it kind of a big deal for a celebrity of her stature (since she's a regular on the celebrity talk/variety/travel show circuit) to be this open about it? jdw
The google translation is choppy, but one gets the feeling from her words that there is still a stigma.

ohtani's jacket
People don't like to talk about it for fear of discrimination, and cancer survivors often keep it a secret because it affects their employment chances. I don't know how big a deal it is that Hokuto spoke out, but breast cancer awareness in Japan is a pressing concern with a shockingly low number of women having annual mammograms. Loss
Liger had a tumor, but my understanding was that it was benign. Anyway, this is horrible news.

The Thread Killer
People don't like to talk about it for fear of discrimination, and cancer survivors often keep it a secret because it affects their employment chances. I don't know how big a deal it is that Hokuto spoke out, but breast cancer awareness in Japan is a pressing concern with a shockingly low number of women having annual mammograms. I've never understood the Japanese attitude towards cancer, but the fear of discrimination aspect really makes sense. That is rampant in North America as well, believe me. People are quick to applaud you for "beating cancer" and equally as quick to reject you if they think it might come back and cost their company medical plan or affect their rates. I agree with Zenjo. Too much. This disease has gutted my life, killing my mother, (and her mother and both sisters) and my poor dad is fighting it as we speak, while I have had my own fight with it. It really is a nightmare. Akira Hokuto has my fondest wishes. It sounds like she is fighting this bravely and that kind of courage is important when dealing with this awful disease. I really do wish the best for her, I hope that surgery was an unqualified success.

RyanClingman
This really really sucks -- I'm glad the surgery went well though.
ohtani's jacket
The cruelest part is that Hokuto undergoes mammography and ultrasound screenings every year. From the sounds of things, it spread quickly.
jushin muta liger
Just looked through her blog yesterday for an update and it looks like Hokuto is in good spirits but she is completely bald now. If you look through the pictures of her blog, she posts selfies of her bald but most of the time she wears a beanie. http://s.ameblo.jp/hokuto-akira/ Her announcement had to be huge announcement because I saw that the press conference she had with Kensuke is over a million views on YouTube.
