Greetings From Allentown podcast

Recommended Posts

This is a great new pod, now on PTBN http://placetobenation.com/greetings-from-allentown-episode-16-wcw-worldwide-6-6-98/. Each episode looks at a different 1 hr TV show from the 80s and 90s. So far, solo host Peter (and he does an amazing job solo, which believe me isn't easy to pull off) has looked at Superstars, Championship Wrestling, Challenge, Maple Leaf, Action Zone, Shotgun Saturday Night, as well as NWA Power Hour and Mid South from 1984. Episode 14 on the episode of Championship Wrestling where Larry turned on Bruno is so goddamn good, one of the best pods I've heard in a while. Latest ep is on a WCW Worldwide from 1998. Fans of old school wrestling please check out this show, it's awesome. He has his own feed to listen to previous episodes, just search for Greetings From Allentown on iTunes or whatever podcatcher app you use. Eventually, all shows will be available on the PWO feed.

Check this out now!

Saw the new one pop up in the ITunes feed so I went back and listened to the first 2 eps. This is sooooo good. I wouldn't have thought a solo podcast could be this riveting, but Peter obviously knows his stuff (or at least does the necessary research to prepare each week).

Love the variety and the randomness. I've been watching the episodes covered on YouTube before listening to each podcast and I can't wait to keep making my way through the archive.

In this special episode of Greetings From Allentown, the first 1987 WWF appearances by Ted DiBiase are examined on the 30th anniversary of the first Million Dollar Man vignettes. Included:

– A brief history of DiBiase and his career across various territories from the mid-70s up to his return to the WWF in May 1987
– The impact of Houston Wrestling and Paul Boesch spurning the NWA and Jim Crockett Promotions in favor of working with the WWF and a big reason why that was done
– A look at the Houston-only storyline that turned babyface Ted DiBiase into a heel literally on the eve of the first Million Dollar Man vignettes and why the WWF would feel they needed to do it
– My personal favorite Million Dollar Man vignette and Ted’s crossover to super-villainy

Thanks for the feedback on the show! The newest episode is on JCP: NWA Worldwide September 24, 1988. I became especially annoyed with Dusty Rhodes in prepping for the show.

My five favorite things from this episode:

- Chris Champion as "Karate Kid" allowing me to talk about the 1984 movie for a bit since it's one of my all time favorites. Unfortunately, I apparently called him "Chris Kanyon" once and somehow missed it in the editing process. Oh well.

- Ron Simmons as the "Just Say No" guy. I didn't remember this at all, must not have lasted long.

- Watching Jim Cornette do babyface promos on all the TVs. He's like one of those "pest" players in hockey, you hate him but are glad when he's on your side.

- Finding out that John Ayers and Terry Funk were best friends; can't believe I didn't know that so I should just get Funk's book.

- JCP giving Dr. Death a microphone and letting him talk for 2 1/2 minutes, albeit under the watchful eye of Jim Ross. And then the Doc losing his train of thought and getting distracted by JR.

my favorite new podcast. You do a helluva job by yourself talking old school wrestling. And in my opinion. A feud between the SMW racist New Jack of 1994 vs the racist Dr D of 1985 would be great promos by both men and bloody matches galore

I was pretty hard on Dusty because I had seen so much of the TV in a short time and he just got on my nerves. Really a excuse to try out the "blow up" sound effect.

Released this one yesterday on The Main Event II with all the bloopers. The biggest shock from my research: just how badly NBC got beat in the ratings that night by ABC and the TGIF lineup.

For a premise you'd think would be easy to dismiss as a must-listen, Peter has proven the exact opposite. I've enjoyed every single show I've listened to (still have a couple to go through) but the effort put in is obvious without ever feeling too laborious. I'd think almost anybody who hasn't listened and reads these forums would appreciate it, and there's a wealth of info for people unfamiliar with certain periods or shows, especially for the WWF or WWWF.

Some inside baseball on this episode: If it comes off as a bit weird, part of that is because I recorded the intro part last which I haven't ever done. So apologies if I made the same joke in the intro then in the show rundown.

Basically I chose this one because I bought Sunny's book via Kindle after a few beers one night. And the free sample was much better than the rest of the book, as it went into her SMW stuff. The book has a LOT of problems, and not just how depressing it gets for the final quarter or so. Her Montreal screwjob conspiracy theory is so easily disproven by anyone with a long term memory or access to TV/Internet.

They took WWF Mania and made it the Sunny Show for a week and this is what we got:

- A fair-minded look at the career of Tammy Lynn Sytch and her key role in launching the WWF’s online presence

- Shawn Michaels’ run to WrestleMania 12, his connection with Sunny, and the peculiar thing Sunny and Shawn would do back then

- An appreciation of old commercials for bizarre merchandise, and how "limited edition" is something when it is hideous and they made 3,000?

- Ranking the Bret Hart WWF World title reigns from worst to best, excluding the 24 hour one

- Breaking down the Billionaire Ted skits piece by piece, with things that were funny, things that were slanderous, and things that backfired completely

- Taking several minutes to slam JBL as a wrestler, character, broadcaster, and human being in general

- The definition of “diminishing returns”: The Ultimate Warrior’s 1996 run

- Goldust toeing the line of homophobia in Piper’s Pit

- My struggle to find a theme song this week (since no one posts the "WWF Mania Theme") leads to a strangely produced number at the top of the show

New show for this week to kick off what I am calling a Fortnight of Funk....Terry Funk. Starting with his NWA run from May 1989 (NWA Pro May 20, 1989) before he was advised to tone it down, lest he hurt someone's feelings.

https://soundcloud.com/prowrestlingonly/nwa-pro-05-20-1989

- It is kind of funny that Funk comes in right as Road House is released, but isn't really there to promote the movie or anything (which I am sure was the idea with Batista in 2014)

- Lance Russell is so amazing in the episode with his interplay with Funk and how upset he gets that the Rookie Challenge match is interrupted.

- I was quite hard on the Ron Simmons-Randy Rose match but I didn't enjoy it in the least.

- The Dynamic Dudes video where they eat pizza and shop for skateboards is the kind of unintentional comedy I crave.

Just posted episode #30, a WWF TNT episode from August 16, 1985.

I figured that doing a talk show might be difficult given that there isn't much in-ring stuff, but actually it was a refreshing change. Plenty of hilarity with Vince in his Johnny Carson role: Tony Garea talking about sheep in New Zealand, Jim Neidhart predicts wrestling internet culture without knowing what that is, Paul Orndorff gets upset about the bounty leading to a musical mashup, and Terry Funk starts and finishes a barroom brawl.
