khawk20
Now figure the Abby shoot is an undeniable success (which it looks like it could be) then this opens up the gates to get a good series of shoots with workers Dave & Bryan are friendly with. I agree. I still think you start a new venture like this with someone that is more trustworthy to make it worth your time and money to kick it off. Abby fucking up their 3rd or 4th interview doesn't have the consequences attached that him fucking up their first one does. If it's actually good, though, you're right, they're off to the races. Well regardless of the subject unless the interview is totally kayfabed and whatnot just based on the name "Wrestling Observer" it'll sell a shit ton of copies. Both to casual fans (who are aware of the name) and the hardcore fans (who will be buying for the rare footage in Abby's library)
kjh
Hmm, I'm not sure I'd be that confident in the success of the project, Talon. Wade Keller dipped his toe in the shoot interview business with Big Vision Entertainment and he only ended up doing a couple of DVDs with them. Maybe this will work out better for Bryan and Dave, as they've quietly increased the online subscription by $1 to cover some of the costs of doing this. I would hope it'd work out better for Bryan & Dave. Figure the Abby shoot is a success, Dave has enough friends & contacts within the business that there could be a few successful projects.... Suppose what kind of big deal it'd be if Dave could pull off a Wrestling Observer shoot with Jim Ross & Steve Austin a few months down the road. Rat bastards! I don't know how the price rise really works. If you sign up now it's $10.99 a month. I'm not sure how it affects recurring PayPal customers. I expect at some point PayPal will stop the payment and force you to sign up at the higher rate. I'm sure Dave could pull off some big names to do shoot interviews. Not sure he could pull off Ross or Austin, given that Ross is looking at doing his own book projects and Austin seems like a guy who wouldn't want to do a shoot interview. Tim Cooke
PayPal can be set up to accept a multitude of recurring subscription payments, so I would expect that anyone who signed up at 7.99 will stay there for life unless Dave resets it (and that would most likely be due to a computer mistake unless he wants to piss off the people who started with him first and are still with him). Strummer
oh man Rajah has the bit from the Observer about Mickie and John Cena. Only the reporter reads it as Mickie trying to break up Cena's marriage and Cena turning down her advances (and James being moved to SD). Of course Cena and Mickie really were an item and Mickie didn't take the break up well and was moved to SD Poor Daniel Pena you can't decipher Dave Meltzer's double talk
spudz25
How does a guy like Kal Rudman have an extra 1.2 million laying around. From today's Observer update... --Kal Rudman, who older fans will remember as one of the wrestling announcers on PRISM in the 70s and early 80s when it aired the WWF shows from the Spectrum, recently donated $1.2 million for a media production center and television station to Temple University. A story in the Philadelphia Inquirer noted Rudman and Bill Cosby were friends from high school at Central High in Philadelphia as well as both going to Temple. Every time I see Kal on an old Spectrum show, he makes me laugh. I think he loved his job. He loved the faces (Backlund had to be his favorite) with a passion and seemed so disgusted with the heels (especially Muraco). I miss characters like Kal, if indeed, he was playing a character. To the point that by the lengths they went to separate them it could only have been a main event guy. That leaves Taker (who has Michelle), HHH (has Steph), HBK (has Jesus), Batista (likes teenagers), so Cena's the only one left it could possibly be. Kal *loved* the heels, especially ones who could cut promos. He just loved being in character during the matches, putting over the faces and pointing out how evil the heels were. But watch his interviews with Don Muraco: Kal just loves Don to death, and you could see that Don was having fun playing to Kal during the interview. One of his interviews before a Backlund match is great. John

MikeCampbell
A buddy of mine made a CM Punk in WWE comp, I was chilling out with him watching it last night, and damn if the criticism from HHH about Punk just doing stuff he saw on Japanese tapes wasn't on the money. - Wanderlei Silva pre-match knuckle shuffle - Keji Mutoh 'puroresu love' pose - Hiroyoshi Tenzan Anaconda Vice - KENTA chop and kick flurry while opponent - Jun Akiyama jumping knee in the corner - KENTA Go 2 Sleep (styled as Go To Sleep or GTS) The only big spot of his that I can't place from Japan is the springboard lariat that he used to always do. artDDP
Purchased some WWE DVD collections from my local used video store yesterday and have been watching WWF and WCW matches from their respective boom periods. One thing that struck me was how quiet the crowds seemed during WCW cards. You could tell they were into the matches and could see and hear them reacting yet the WWF crowds were miked better and you could really hear them going bananas. It made the matches seem a little more exciting. What also got me was how passive the WCW announcers were. There were times when Tony Schiavone could get his dander up though for the most part he and the fellow announcers described the action as if they were calling a baseball game on radio. Wasn't that what Tony was doing prior to working for the NWA?
Loss
The production values were obviously better during the Nitro years, but the audio was SO much better in the Crockett years. I don't know if the fans were just that much louder, they were better at mic'ing them, or both. WCW didn't even mic Dave Penzer into the camera sometimes, so he often sounded like a really distant echo.
Guest Slickster
Calling baseball is what Tony Schiavone did before WCW and what he does now - he's the voice of the AAA Gwinnett Braves and he also does sports radio reports for an Atlanta radio station.
