El-P
I'm French and I know who Jude Apatow is. And I've not seen any of his movies, which I don't think are that huge of a success here anyway. But still, his name has been on the forefront of american comedies for the last few years. ohtani's jacket
I knew Damon but only because the 2004 Red Sox/Yankees series was the only time I got into baseball.
Marty
If you take a survey of random people, a high percentage didn't know who Brittany Murphy was until Sunday night at the earliest.
rovert
There's also the possibility that Martin's being intentionally obtuse about some of this (he pretended not to know the names of the Access Hollywood hosts when recapping the Raw they hosted even though their names were repeated over and over throughout). That is the actual reason, he thinks these celebs are below Wrestling
S.L.L.
If you take a survey of random people, a high percentage don't know the vice president's name. If you took a random survey of people, I bet more would know who Judd Apatow is than know who Joe Biden is. Â I don't now if that's evidence of anything as far as this argument goes, just a thought that popped into my head. That and just because you think something doesn't mean you should assume most of society thinks the same way, but that's a lesson Res is pretty clearly never going to learn. Â Â Â Completely incorrect and this is something that I've been more than aware of since I was a little kid. Your post also doesn't make sense concerning this discussion especially since it's a speculative discussion about how well known someone is. But still, I'll go with it for fun sake. You my friend are sounding like you are doing the same thing you accuse me of doing. because in order to say that that you must think I'm wrong and to do that you aare assuming you are right about what society thinks which means you're assuming you know the answer to this speculative question. Slasher
Well I decided to put this to work at the mall today when I was shopping for Christmas presents. I asked 50 people the following: Â Who is Judd Apatow? Â Out of 50, 39 people successfully answered the question with a various forms of answers ranging from "a movie producer/director" to specifically detailing what movies he has been attached to. Â 5 people blew the question off and 6 people failed to get it right. Â In short, Resident Evil is a douchebag as usual.
Tawren
Now ask 50 randoms who the Vice President is. Â And then ask 50 other randoms who Ken Jeong is. Â Lets find out
Slasher
I would but I've long left the mall. The original argument that RE was making was that people wouldn't know who Apatow was, based on the fact HE didn't. This clearly proved him wrong, assuming one is to believe this informal survey. Tawren
I know, and I was being a little facetious with my comment. What I am arguing is that while Bryan and Dave are definitely in the wrestling bubble, a sizable amount of their pop culture ignorance is not a big deal or worth making fun of. Stuff like not knowing Ken Jeong or specifics on Johny Damon is fine. Really, when they're immersed a business that thinks Mini-Me jokes are relevant in 2009, it's amazing they are as up to date as they are. goodhelmet
When I see him on TV, I know who Ken Jeong was... but I didn't know his name was Ken Jeong. He was the naked dude in Hangover, the doctor in Knocked Up etc. Never bothered to find out his name from the credits.

Slasher
That's fine, but there's a better way to make that point than to make a sweeping generalization about the population that you have no standing to speak for. That's where you come across as a tool.

S.L.L.
But still, I'll go with it for fun sake. You my friend are sounding like you are doing the same thing you accuse me of doing. because in order to say that that you must think I'm wrong and to do that you aare assuming you are right about what society thinks which means you're assuming you know the answer to this speculative question. Not really. Â My claim has actual supporting evidence - Judd Apatow is a big name producer/director who's movies make a ton of money, have often recieved critical praise, and who's name has been used to help sell movies as much as any of his actors. Slasher's impromptu survey bears this out. "Do most people know who X is" is inherently a speculative question, of course. But I have a lot of ancillary evidence to support the speculation that, say, a lot of people know who Jesus Christ is, or that a lot of people know who Barack Obama is. Judd Apatow is a big name figure in Hollywood these days, and while I can't say for sure whether or not most people know who he is without asking every single person on Earth, all readily available evidence suggests he's a pretty famous dude. Â Your claim is supported by the fact that you didn't like two of his movies and you personally didn't know his name until you read it on a wrestling forum. Â Both claims are speculation. But one is speculation based on abductive reasoning from objective evidence, and one is based on extrapolation of personal experience. The former is valid, the latter, by itself, is not, and that's a lesson you are pretty clearly never going to learn. Â Res claiming that most people don't know who Jesus is in 5...4.... Â Didn't he help with Freaks and Geeks? Cuz I actually liked that show. Â You have a really bad habit of taking wussy shots at everyone not only in wrestling but with people on message boards as well. Jesus is actually not as well known as he was years ago when religon played a more prominent role in society but still, almost absolutely everyone knows who Jesus is. Maybe even more than Apatow! Â My speculation is based on what I have seen and heard. The circle of people I know from family to friends to associates to whoever never talk about Apatow even when discussion comes to movies. I understand he's popular for some nerds and they get defensive about him. I wouldn't call that speculation on reasoning based on objective evidence. Slasher
As opposed to you being defensive for being exposed as a person who rarely steps outside his wrestling-oriented bubble and then assuming that random people also resides in said bubble? The reality is you likely surround yourself with "like minded" individuals who shares similar interests and disinterests. They in no shape or form qualify as "random". It's like if I tried to say that no one knows who Chris Jericho is because my family and friends don't follow wrestling, and therefore, wouldn't know who he is, then applying it to the general population which will likely consist of some wrestling fans who does in fact know who Jericho is. Dan
You know, instead of bickering about some director, we could be making fun of Babinsack's new Dragongate review. Let us not lose sight of the true spirit of this thread.
Bix
Apatow was a writer, executive producer, and director for Freaks & Geeks. As far as TV shows go, he also had a big hand in The Ben Stiller Show, The Larry Sanders Show, The Critic, and Undeclared.  As far as Babinsack, yeah, that DG review is awful:  In terms of speed (or in Vampire terms, celerity) and innovation and just raising the bar of professional wrestling beyond the commonplace, I cannot recommend this DVD enough.  If you’re a fan of the artform of professional wrestling, I defy you to watch this and not be inspired. If only certain promoters would make this viewing mandatory, because if anyone with a shred of creativity watched this DVD, you would have to be comatose to not see the potential of the talent, the breadth of the effort and the myriad of storylines, characters and angles that can be created by the visuals provided. I know who the mainstream fans will vote for in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Match of the Year balloting, but this is the first of two stellar matches on this DVD alone. Which tells you what DVD deserves recognition, which promotion, and really, which guys who ‘aren’t 40 something and able to reduce their schedules to allow them to pull out the stops here and there’ have to do on a regular basis to earn their income. (By the way, Cattle Mutilation + WWE = ???)  Yeah, this may be one of the last times you hear that move being called, at least by that name. Ditch
It drives me crazy to see people write reviews like that, calling it essentially the best thing in the history of ever, and they'll put absolutely zero effort towards trying to watch any Dragon Gate shows from Japan. If every match is a MOTYC, and one is deeply concerned with MOTYCs, why only bother watching the DGUSA shows? Â Meanwhile if one actually watched a decent number of the shows from Japan, the DGUSA shows would rapidly lose their novelty and one might discover that the matches are only MOTYCs if you haven't seen the spots and sequences before. Resident Evil
I loooved Davey vs Shingo and thought it blew away almost everything I've seen this year from anywhere/ There are a few people that didn't like the "overkill" and thus the match but from what I've seen with others it's a top runner for MOTY from everyone.. I thought it was the best match of the year right alongside the first KENTA vs Nakajima match so I'm glad the review praised it extremely strongly. Stuff like that gets me excited about wrestling again. Davey is on absolute fire.
