That was in 2001 I think

That was the night after Judgment Day 2001. Kane had kicked Stephanie in the face the night before and Test made fun of her for it.

This was during the period where the WWF was having a bunch of babyfaces trying to humiliate Stephanie to put heat on them. Kane stalked her and dangled her over a railway (which was in reality a mannequin with Stephanie doing a screaming voice over), Rikishi gave her the Stinkface and the previously mentioned Test angle. Problem was Hunter would end up beating them in the end

I think a better way to describe what happened after Russo left the WWF was characters who just never had a concrete direction got a better direction after he left.

Edge and Christian just seemed to bounce around all over the place, but when Russo left, they were eventually groomed into the top heel team using comedy properly to get over. Too Cool was treated as the allegedly gay couple, then turned into white guys can't rap, then after Russo left, became the fun-loving guys who befriend Rikishi by putting shades on him, thus putting him into a trance, then doing a dance number that the fans loved. Rikishi, BTW, was being tried as a sumo character in dark matches when Russo was there, but when Russo was gone, they changed plans.

And on it goes from there... characters mostly had a better direction.

Not everything was perfect, though. Aside from them dropping the ball on finding ways to wrap up a potential angle with HHH and Test, they screwed up the Dudleys heel push and were forced to make them faces as a result and the stuff they did with Mae Young (one which led to the problems with the Dudleys) was pretty bad. But, for the most part, the creative team had the right ideas.

Heh, I totally forgot about that. He started out in real late '99 as a generic monster heel. I remember seeing Tracey Smothers jobbing to him on Heat one time, before the dancing gimmick started.

E&C weren't really booked as the top heel team at the time, I'd say that distinction went to Road Dogg & X-Pac. Even though they never got the belts, they were the pet tag team of the whole McMahon-Helmsley Factime era. They did fewer jobs and got more face time on television than any of the other teams. DX was the heel team that was used to turn the Dudleys face, too.

CRZ's "X-Pac never jobs in singles matches, except when wrestling Steve Blackman" talking point was very, very true.

I always got the feeling Waltman was a little bitter about the Benoit/Jericho/Eddy types coming in and bypassing him on the food chain pretty quickly.

Wouldn't you have been?

I believe T&A were the Dudleys' first feud after their face turn. As for X-Pac and Road Dogg, I'll never forget them going over the Dudleys in a tables match, then humiliating them pushing them off the stage in a dumpster, which set up a dumpster match for the Dudleys to get their revenge...and then DX won again.

I remember the Dudleys/T&A feud well and Jim Ross was constantly trying to make it like Trish Stratus was a sympathetic character, even though the booking didn't make it the case. It seemed more like WWF was waffling on what to do with the Dudleys, because they never turned face outright... they just got face pops because they put Mae Young through a table when fans were getting tired of Mae Young and the stuff she was doing.

The Dudleys-DX match at KOTR was certainly annoying, especially when you consider that they put Tori into the match, which I suspect was a way for the Dudleys to win the match without Road Dogg or X-Pac taking the "tables" fall. And, of course, we never even got that ending, just Tori going through the table after the match was already over.

In fact, KOTR that year was annoying in general, certainly one of the low points for booking as far as the creative team that year was concerned. The Hardcore evening gown title match was a bad idea, the six-man main event essentially allowed HHH to drop the title without eating a pin from The Rock, and the KOTR tournament itself was poorly booked. Angle-Rikishi might have worked as the final, but the problem was Rikishi had won the I-C title prior and thus fans immediately knew Rikishi wasn't going to win the tourney. On top of that, you had a pretty bad idea for a first-round match in Crash Holly-Bull Buchanan, featuring two wrestlers who no fan believed would win the thing, and while Angle-Jericho was certainly the best option for the final, I would have been OK with it being a semifinal match. Instead, it was a quarterfinal match and putting it there immediately took away any suspicion regarding who would win. Some fans may have thought maybe Benoit or Eddie could be a potential winnner, but realistically, Angle and Jericho were the top candidates.

Snowden wrote this a few weeks ago:

Penn wants you to know he's smaller than Matt Hughes. A lot smaller. Never mind that he has begged for a return to welterweight, that some in the sport are whispering he essentially vacated the lightweight title because he couldn't get interested in fights in that division, preferring to return to 170. He just couldn't get interested in the competition at 155. But he also hasn't built his body up to be a legitimate welterweight. He's not ready. And he wants you to know it.

So Coughlin launched into a furious rant about Snowden on Five Star Radio, a rant which you can find a humorous excerpt from in the next post. Anyway, what followed was this flame war between the two of them on the Board:

It's frankly unbelievable that you spent tens of minutes insulting me over a two sentence excerpt from an article. Not only did you misread a small passage in a much longer article, but you managed to defame me in much the way you claimed I defamed Penn.

yeah, i didn't misread a thing. anyone on earth can read it. i read the entire fucking paragraph. or is this another instance where snowden writes something and then when the whole world "gets it wrong" he goes "no no no, that's not what i meant."

here, all, read the piece, judge for yourself:

http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2010/11/18/1821...shook-the-sport

The relevant passage:

Penn wants you to know he's smaller than Matt Hughes. A lot smaller. Never mind that he has begged for a return to welterweight, that some in the sport are whispering he essentially vacated the lightweight title because he couldn't get interested in fights in that division, preferring to return to 170. He just couldn't get interested in the competition at 155. But he also hasn't built his body up to be a legitimate welterweight. He's not ready. And he wants you to know it. The former welterweight champion told UFC announcer Joe Rogan that he was sitting at 165 - and would likely enter the cage several pounds below the non-title limit of 171 pounds.

(Emphasis added)

There's no other inference besides, "Penn threw the fight." Maybe he threw it by undertraining, or whatever, but the inference is clear: Penn threw the fight(s).

Fuck off, you fucking hack. Go back to writing half assed 150 word "articles" designed to do nothing more than generate traffic. Leave critical thinking and intelligent analysis to people with half a brain (all I have these days). Go ahead and do that thing where you show up after high school basketball games and sniff the still warm seats.

You've linked the wrong post. This is the post in question:

http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2010/11/15/1 ... att-hughes

This is the single paragraph in question:

I've highlighted the portion that follows immediately after your rant. It makes it pretty clear that I was simply saying that Penn couldn't invest mentally in fights at lightweight. I didn't suggest that Penn threw any fights, just that he is mentally fragile and a much better fighter when he cares about the opponent.

It's embarrassing that Dave Meltzer is associated, even tangentially, with this kind of attack.

nothing's going to "go." i'm not going to engage in anything. he wrote it. it's clear as day what he meant. i don't play the back track, that's not what i really meant, let me tell you now, etc... game. it was bullshit. it was libelous. it was absolute horseshit. he can go fuck himself for all i care.

Of course not. You're not alone in your bedroom with a plugin USB mic ranting and raving. People talk about keyboard warriors - you don't even have the courage to confront someone in an open forum like this. This is beneath the Wrestling Observer and the standards Dave has worked almost 30 years to maintain.

And it just kinda goes on like that.

So Mike wanted to make a point that Snowden was just trolling and saying things he didn't really believe in order to cause controversy. OK, fair point. This is how he articulated it on his show:

"I get that what he's doing is in large part done to drum up interest, to get the almighty CLICK, to get the COMMENT, and as a man that says all kinds of crazy shit I can appreciate that, although I will state for the record that I actually state absolutely nothing on this show to drive listeners towards this thing and that most of what I say and scream and rant and rave I later sit there and go, 'shit, I really hope I don't get in trouble for that.' I really hope that I don't get kicked off this website, 'cause that would be something. This is a website that has a thread entitled 'Prostitots and Mini-tramps.' This is a website that has hundreds, maybe thousands, of pictures of underage girls, not nude, and not in violative (sic) of any child pornography laws, but really fuckin' creepy Mr. Jeff. And I'm afraid that I'm gonna get kicked off of this website. That would be fuckin' something else. Like getting kicked off the the Stormfront website. That's the Nazis, right? I think so. So I get it, fine, you wanna write your shit, you wanna be controversial and drum up interest. I fuckin' hate that style of writing. I fuckin' hate it. I think it is bullshit. Write what you think and what you believe. Writing shit just to get a reaction out of people is pointless. It doesn't do any good. Any asshole can do it. If you want to be controversial, here's how you go controversial: controversy is coming in five seconds, everybody, so turn off. I'm gonna say a bad word and it'll be controversial. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. (BEEEEEEP) OOOOOH, Mike's controversial, he used the N-word. It's easy, I could just fuckin' take this show and just be N-word this and N-word that, N N N N N N N N N. I even said it just there and I probably should go bleep it out, I'm gonna bleep it out. So I did it, I bleeped it out, I caved because I really don't actually want to be controversial and I've now realized, I've learned the errors of my way everybody. I've learned what words you can and can not say and I appreciate that most of you listening understand what I'm actually getting at, but enough's happened that I don't want to get in trouble anymore so I bleeped out the N-word. Probably shouldn't have even said it. Maybe I didn't really say it and it's all part of a bit. Heh heh heh heh heh, DICK. Anyhoo, I'm going with the standard swears and I'm gonna try to stay away from the ethnic and religious shit, unless you're an Armenian. Fuck those guys. Seriously, fuck 'em. So I hate that style of writing and radio-ing and all that stuff. I mean, to me it's really great if you write something and it becomes controversial, but that's what you really believe, and you're actually challenging people, but it takes no skill just to say, 'gee, I wonder what's gonna be the contrary position. I'm gonna do that.' Meeeeeh, what a fuckin' dick. Just fuck that shit."

So what's this I hear about Mike Coughlin falsely claiming that Jonathan Snowden said that B.J. Penn has thrown fights?

Yeah well not like Snowden is a saint on falsely claiming things, Bix.

I can confirm all that, there is truth to the stilghtly jumped claim Bix made semi recently that the F4W board is "the 4chan of Pro Wrestling forums."

Oh please, really? It was labelled as a rant and Snowden could learn a thing or two about the sport from Coughlin.

More Alverez than Dave really. It has been on there for years. When the site merger happened the forum went into total fucking meltdown over the prospect of increased moderation due to presence of Dave and the Wrestling Observer on the site (essentially forum members thought the place would turn into Wrestling Classics or something over night). Pretty much that thread was one of the bargaining chips the forum members won during Bryan's attempts to return sanity to the board and gain support for the changes he was making. I'll stand up for a lot of things on that site which a few of you many look down upon but that thread isn’t one of them. In standing up for the F4W forum I will say that very few members post in that thread at all it, mainly it is the same confirmed creepy in real life guy over and over. Whenever someone brings up that they are taking a board related issue to Meltzer Bryan's stock answer is that Dave knows that the board is a cesspool so he doesnt really care but PLEASE note in saying this Im not saying that dave knows or tolerates that thread.

Just to make Alan4L happy, a quote from him:

OH MY GOD - This is gold!!!

Please tell me what I need to do to get included in that thread.

What a bunch of whiny faggots.

*hopes that works*

Can't he come up with more original homophobic slurs that that? Unfortunately Joe Rogan already beat him to the punch by several days!

They were getting face pops because they were putting women through tables period, not just Mae. Although the first Powerbomb on Mae Young was surreal, the one off the stage was uncanny. Lita, Trish, Terri, Tori, etc. It was the whole "euphoric stare!" era of the Dudleys. Pretty crazy to think that a heel tag team would get face pops for beating up women, especially when some of the women, like Lita, were fan favorites...

So what your are saying is that the people on the figure four board demanded that Alverez keep a kiddie porn thread open as a concession for allowing Dave Meltzer to join the site, and Alverez agreed to it? And Meltzer willing joined a site which not only has a kiddie porn thread, but made the continuation of the kiddie porn thread a prerequisite of the merger? That is basically indefensible.

I'm trying to figure out why Dave would make any concessions to joining any board, let alone that one.

Don't quite get Bryan on that one either. For all my references about porn over the years, I'd never think of allowing a thread/forum on it on a board that my name was attached to as an owner/mod. I'm hardly a prude, but there are plenty of places around the net for folks to go to for that other than a wrestling board.

Let alone what I would assume is a jailbait thread. Dave is being a bit dense on the potential blowback as well that is possible on the internet.
