New Japan's english site did an interview with Sanada about him working with AEW at Forbidden Door and real recognizes real across international boundries:

SANADA: It does, it really does. When you’re chasing this title, there isn’t anything you have to protect, not just the belt itself but the image behind it. When I was over with AEW, I felt how important that IWGP label is.

–Do you think that trip made it hit home for you?

SANADA: I got to chat with CM Punk, and he was like ‘that belt is the coolest’. You know, for a CM Punk to know who you are and what you’re doing, that speaks to how widely the IWGP Champion is known.

This is Joe's what...3rd wind of his career?

Looked completely washed for the last couple years of his TNA run, goes on to have a great NXT run.
Sporadically good run on the main roster, but frequently injured, to the point where he was an announcer for a year (this mf was calling WM in the rain 2 years ago)
Gets released, then hired back for that one NXT match with Kross where he looked absolutely finished.
Pops up in AEW and has been fucking incredible since day one.

I say that has to do with motivation. When Joe is motivated about something he will make it look good if he isn’t motivated well we saw what happen. He will either put ok weight and quit giving his all like that TNA run. Remember when he randomly came out with fire dancers. Such a weird time. I don’t think WWE ever saw the Joe as the killing machine he can be which I think is why he got hurt cause he was just collecting a big check at that point which who can blame him. He probably made more in the wwe run then his whole Indy run or maybe close to it.

I can’t speak more highly of that tag match. Like I thought it was going to be good but I didnt expect that. Jay White is a tremendous worker and Juice is perfect as a tag team guy. FTR of course looked amazing in their element.

I also liked The Owen Hart themed gear by Hobbs. The opening promo by Punk getting the tournament over was also refreshing. Just cause we get the video package every year but actually having your top guy putting it over how big of a deal it is really makes the thing feel special. I like Ricky but I don’t think he should win it all but something tells me that he will.

Using the tournament as a way to strap the rocket on Ricky wouldn't be the worst idea in the world, but him as a babyface vs Punk (who is still the #1 babyface for a significant portion of the audience) probably isn't going to do him any favors.

Yeah that tag rocked, as I expected. All four of them are amazing workers (even Juice, it saddens me a lot to see how web have forgotten his great NJPW run).

The main event was very good and I'm kinda shocked they saved some stuff for a rematch later, but I'm all in (hehe) for it. That rivalry is money, for sure.

I don't think they'll let Ricky beat Punk as of now, specially now that Punk has still business with Joe. But he should get as close to defeat him as anybody before him in AEW.

I can definitely see Punk doing the PR offensive move of losing to Starks to show how giving he is and to demonstrate that he isn’t AEW Hogan.  IIRC he was talking in the past about how Starks was one of the good ones who had the common sense to ask the humble master for his sage advice so it would be a very Punk move to do that job since it’s meaningless.  Could always just do a schmozz with Joe involved, too.

Rock Hard Juice Robinson fucking sucked in NJ. He has not in AEW. Juice's face run was great but Gedo gonna Gedo.

It feels like Ricky is being setup for failure here. If it is a babyface vs babyface match, Punk gets the bigger reaction. Punk turning heel went out the window when Joe choked him out, so that's not going to happen. Punk staying babyface but working the match as a heel makes Ricky look like a chump. Ricky turning heel on Punk could work, but he needs a face push, especially with Hobbes turning face.

I don't know how Ricky comes out of this match looking good and "feel-good" babyface Punk beating Ricky for the Owen Hart Memorial Cup is a bad look and feels sleazy.

Surely there's a way for Joe to cost Punk the match without making Starks an afterthought. Like, say, Joe causes Punk to get DQed by attacking Starks and then chokes Punk out, but then Starks recovers and chases Joe off. Then again, this company does tend to book matches between babyfaces without a clear exit strategy, so who knows.

Ricky really needs a definitive babyface win. Beating Punk because of Joe or losing to Punk will make the Owen Hart Memorial Trophy a concession prize. Joe beating Punk through desperate/nefarious means and losing to Starks after a Punk distraction would have helped more than this. Plus, Ricky would have a win over Joe that Punk wouldn't have, which could have moved either Punk or Ricky to tweener.
The current situation has misfire written all over it.
