HUGE card tonight, perhaps the most stacked Takeover yet. Gargano vs Ciampa should be great, Almas vs Black should deliver, ladder match will have crazy heat and could be a ridiculous spotfest clustermess of a match, and tag and women's match should also be good. Can't wait!

They taped a few weeks of TV from the Steel Pier in Atlantic City in the summer of 79. Not sure if it was for a local Atlantic City TV show or if it aired everywhere in the territory. The matches were comnentated by Monsoon years before he became a regular commentator. Cawthon's site also has Bruno commentating solo for one of the tapings. The matches I've seen from the tapings are interesting, with no jobber matches, just matches between pushed guys, plus a midget tag. I remember DiBiase vs Valentine being good. For fans of the late Titans of Wrestling podcast, DiBiase and Andre vs Scicluna and Jerry Valiant was a legendary controversial match, with Parv calling it a classic, Johnny and Pete hating it, and me being in the middle

Strategically placed announcement obviously, and perhaps the final piece of the boo Lesnar, cheer Roman puzzle. History may repeat itself 14 years later for Lesnar

Yeah, TSN broadcast the ESPN show. Not sure about the Winnipeg footage, that was before my time, but I think there was some kind of TSN exclusive wrestling show? Khawk would know

I think the announcing was live. Matysik was there in Winnipeg, said he was at ringside, and appeared in the ring after the match

The idea behind announcing the next month's card was mostly to entice fans to buy tickets before they left the show. AFAIK, the box office would be opened after Finkel's announcement. It's also the main reason the main event was always mid-show, because then they could announce the main event for next month's card without giving away the finish

At one point in the 70s and early 80s their main TV slot in the New York area was midnight on a Saturday. I think this proves that if you have a hot product with a lot of top talent, the timeslot is irrelevant, the fans will follow

She was married to promoter Billy Wolfe who controlled women's wrestling before. She gained control after divorcing him. Wolfe was not exactly a peach of a person. So he had engendered no loyalty. Moolah wasnt married to Billy Wolfe, that was Mildred Burke. Im hazy on how exactly Moolah conquered the womens circuit. But Moolah was married to Buddy Lee who went on to be a bit of a mogul in country music. Meltzer explains a lot of this in the latest Observer. Basically after Burke and Wolfe split, there was disorder and an opening for a power grab, which Moolah and Buddy Lee did. Eventually, Moolah and Buddy Lee split, he went into country music, leaving Moolah with a pretty good grip on women's wrestling

It's more than just cold numbers that make it the biggest show of all time. Hogan vs Andre is mythical and so is Savage vs Steamer to a lesser extent. It's more legend than wrestling show

I think I just saw Frankie Williams career highpoint in a match from 8/3/78 where Spiros Arion gives him a bunch of offense and a couple comebacks that rally the crowd

Haha, as a long time fan of this era (let's say 75-83) it warms my heart to see a convert. Most fans don't give it much of a chance or even reject it sight unseen. Yes, some of the undercards on the big shows are brutal, but the talent is top notch and a ton of fun to watch. The major matches, angles and feuds usually deliver and are well done, with some all time classics

Yeah, I knew I should've looked for a Japanese commentary version of the Golden Lovers vs Young Bucks. I think that was the first I heard of the JR and Barnett team and they left me cold

Yeah, I think the Ospreay comment actually made me physically wince when I read it. I mean I'm a million miles from being an expert on him, but from what I've seen I don't see what makes him the best at anything wrestling wise. He's a great gymnast, I guess, if that matters
