  1. The idea behind announcing the next month's card was mostly to entice fans to buy tickets before they left the show. AFAIK, the box office would be opened after Finkel's announcement. It's also the main reason the main event was always mid-show, because then they could announce the main event for next month's card without giving away the finish
  2. At one point in the 70s and early 80s their main TV slot in the New York area was midnight on a Saturday. I think this proves that if you have a hot product with a lot of top talent, the timeslot is irrelevant, the fans will follow
  3. She was married to promoter Billy Wolfe who controlled women's wrestling before. She gained control after divorcing him. Wolfe was not exactly a peach of a person. So he had engendered no loyalty. Moolah wasnt married to Billy Wolfe, that was Mildred Burke. Im hazy on how exactly Moolah conquered the womens circuit. But Moolah was married to Buddy Lee who went on to be a bit of a mogul in country music. Meltzer explains a lot of this in the latest Observer. Basically after Burke and Wolfe split, there was disorder and an opening for a power grab, which Moolah and Buddy Lee did. Eventually, Moolah and Buddy Lee split, he went into country music, leaving Moolah with a pretty good grip on women's wrestling
  4. I usually always go with the Japanese commentary but took the easy route this time. Never again
  5. It's more than just cold numbers that make it the biggest show of all time. Hogan vs Andre is mythical and so is Savage vs Steamer to a lesser extent. It's more legend than wrestling show
  6. I know I'm the only one who cares about such things, but omg 9/2/78 features a Baron vs Dom match!
  7. Yep, Mania 3 was a total flop. Why do we even care 30 years later. Close the thread
  8. If anyone wants to see Larry Z with a moustache, and a fine one at that, 8/26/78 is the show for you
  9. I think I just saw Frankie Williams career highpoint in a match from 8/3/78 where Spiros Arion gives him a bunch of offense and a couple comebacks that rally the crowd
  10. Haha, as a long time fan of this era (let's say 75-83) it warms my heart to see a convert. Most fans don't give it much of a chance or even reject it sight unseen. Yes, some of the undercards on the big shows are brutal, but the talent is top notch and a ton of fun to watch. The major matches, angles and feuds usually deliver and are well done, with some all time classics
  11. Yeah, I knew I should've looked for a Japanese commentary version of the Golden Lovers vs Young Bucks. I think that was the first I heard of the JR and Barnett team and they left me cold
  12. Yeah, I think the Ospreay comment actually made me physically wince when I read it. I mean I'm a million miles from being an expert on him, but from what I've seen I don't see what makes him the best at anything wrestling wise. He's a great gymnast, I guess, if that matters
  13. I was at Canadian Stampede, so it's an easy answer for me. Second, I guess from Raw in early 2001, maybe when Storm came out?

Loved the bookend debuts of EC3 and Ricochet on tonight's show. Jesus, EC3 where have you been all my life (I stopped watching TNA years ago)
  15. Interestingly, this has always been Vince McMahon's greatest weakness. Which is funny, because one of the rare times he was open to embracing guys who were getting organically over was when his back was against the wall in 96-97 and it produced the greatest peak in company history
  16. Episode 29 https://soundcloud.com/prowrestlingonly/world-cast-29 September 25, 1982 (WCCW 40) To celebrate Kerry squashing Kabuki in 43 seconds, the boys clock in at a lean 28 minutes. Still, in addition to that amazing event, there is a lot to discuss, such as... -Kevin and Bill Irwin, possibly for the 3rd or 4th time since the start of this podcast, having a pretty good match -More Jay Saldi ridiculousness -Where have all the jobbers gone? -Bugsy vs Bundy in a major hoss main event...that only lasts a couple minutes World Cast: The Fastest Podcast Alive
  17. You may not be a troll, and you may actually be Japanese, but one thing is for sure is you're an egomaniac
  18. It's a long con troll job, making us all go blind trying to read his posts ☺
  19. Just starting this now, but Lassartesse really caught my attention with his heel charisma during the intros and I was coming here to ask if anyone knew who that wrestler was
  20. For a complete match it must be. That's very cool. Is this something new to surface or has it been out there before?
  21. The Rio thing is interesting because that's also where in kayfabe Buddy Rogers beat Argentina Rocca for the first WWWF title in 63. Not sure if that was the official story before the IC tournament or retconned later to match up
  22. He was pretty much relegated to only commentating over the replays. Not sure if he was told not to speak during the body of the match or not

Just some great old fashioned pro wrestling right there folks
  24. Episode 28 https://soundcloud.com/prowrestlingonly/world-cast-28 September 18, 1982 (WCCW 39) The post-August Star Wars blahs continue for WCCW. The Sportatorium is half-empty, but those that are there are bat shit crazy wrestling fans. Still, not a lot to really be excited about watching from your sofa in 2018. The boys find humor in it all (mostly from Jay Saldi's commentary), plus the main event is...well...not a great match, but it's a fascinating one, that's for sure. World Cast: Hosted as always by controversial wrestling journalist Pete Schirmacher!
  25. Meltzer wrote in the daily update that Styles was hurt (not sure when) and they covered for it by running an injury angle at the last MSG show
