[2000-02-22-BJW-Exite Series] Ryuji Yamakawa vs Kintaro Kanemura
Laney replied to Loss's topic in February 2000
This is a pretty fun death match with some sick looking spots with tables. A lot less violent then the death matches we see today, but there was some good wrestling and psychology involved. A good match, but I wouldn't rate this on the highest end of death matches that I've seen. You have to give them credit though for getting a lot of the violent spots that they did here. ***1/2- 12 replies

[2000-02-20-AJPW] Vader & Steve Williams vs Jun Akiyama & Kenta Kobashi
Laney replied to soup23's topic in February 2000
This is a fantastic tag team match that kind of has a slow build but results in some exciting sequences in the ending portion of this match. Everyone looks great in this match. A lot of great legwork on Vader with him doing a great job of selling. Vader and Doc win, but Akiyama and Kobashi still look like strong contenders with the way they really took it to Vader here. A fun finishing sequence with Kobashi just getting decimated with double teams and then takes a brutal chokeslam. Just an overall fantastic tag match. ****1/2 -
[2000-02-18-ARSION] Aja Kong & Mariko Yoshida vs Ayaka Hamada & Mika Akino
Laney replied to soup23's topic in February 2000
Hamada and Akino do an excellent job of effectively double teaming Kong to keep her down. Some sickening counters to the double team offense here as she stops a springboarding Akino twice here, once with a powerbomb, and the second time by nailing her in the face. A lot of great matwork here too with a lot of cool armbar transitions. There's a monkey flip transition into an armbar that is quite the sight to see. This is Joshi and it begins to dabble in excess for a bit here, but it still turns out to be an excellent match. ****1/2- 6 replies

[2000-02-17-AJPW-Excite Series] Vader vs Toshiaki Kawada
Laney replied to Loss's topic in February 2000
I thought this was a very good match. Kawada was really fired up in this one and really took it to Vader. There's a great moment here where Kawada is just barraging Vader with kicks, Vader is out on his feet, and then is finally taken down with a jumping enziguri. It was kind of surprising to see Vader fighting from underneath for most of this match, but they put together an entertaining match regardless. ****- 17 replies

This is a lot better than you would think it would be given that it is 2000 WCW. Both guys really clicked this night and were able to put together something good. It's surprising to hear the red and yellow Hogan get such a strong face reaction here. Although you do still have some of the detractors that you can see in the crowd with the "Hogan Please Retire" sign. ***

This is an awesome match. Very brutal with KAORU getting busted open in the early stages but showing a lot of heart as she attempts to take out the monster that is Aja Kong. KAORU goes after Kong's arm with a broken table and the brutality of this reminds me of the Magnum TA/Tully Blanchard cage match with the broken chair. Just awesome brutality in a near perfect match. Aja Kong is her usual violent self here and hits some brutal backfists. A MOTYC for sure. ****3/4

This match is chaotic and ugly, but it works. There are several botches in this match, but they play no detriment to the match at all. Everyone keeps up the pace and quickly works the botched move into the match. This is fast paced brutal Joshi at it's best. There's a lot of stuff in this match, but they manage to stop from going over the top and making it feel like they are kicking out of too much. The finishing finisher buster is teased effectively throughout the match. ****1/4

A lot of awkward spots in this one. Spanky continues to look the best out of all the TWA guys as Dragon has a few rough spots in this one. Love Machine looks terrible here as he has a few botches throughout with both Spanky and Dragon. The portion where Dragon plays FIP for Buster isn't that bad, but overall this is very rough around the edges. *3/4

Toryumon has been so much fun to watch in 2000. I agree that this is probably the best Crazy Max team combination. Not being too familiar with this period of Toryumon, I was expecting SAITO to be today's Ryo Saito. That is not the case, this is the guy that becomes Super Shisa. SAITO and Horiguchi look like they need more polishing, but they do a good job of being the guys to take punishment from Crazy Max. The Crazy Max team is very impressive in this one and do an excellent job of playing the heels. ****

I enjoyed this more as an angle than as a match. Everything they did in-ring was solid, but it seemed a bit short. I guess in that sense it does a good job of showing how good these guys are together and leaves you thirsty for more. Great angle, great feud build-up, but not quite enough to the match to make it great in itself. ***3/4

This is an amazing tv main event. An excellent fast-paced 10-man tag with everyone getting a chance to shine. The crowd just eats everything up and is solidly behind the babyfaces. The finish is kind of weird as Foley seems to accidentally attempt to break up the pinfall. Just an awesome main event that I don't remember being topped by anything else this year. WWE tv seems to really be on point during this time period. One thing that stands out to me is that it seems like they really dropped the ball with Rikishi. The crowd seems to accept him as a main event guy. ****1/4

[2000-02-07-WWF-Raw] Edge & Christian vs New Age Outlaws
Laney replied to soup23's topic in February 2000
I fall more in line with Loss on this one. I thought this was a fun tv tag match. The Dudleys were good on commentary here, but the camera seemed to focus on them a little too much throughout this. The Outlaws really are horrible heels during this time period. Their schtick is over and they stick with it to pop the crowd. Simple match with good action. E&C played their roles very well, while the Outlaws didn't really do much to necessitate any heat. *** -
[2000-02-06-Toryumon] CIMA & Sumo Fuji vs Chocoball KOBE & Masaaki Mochizuki
Laney replied to soup23's topic in February 2000
It's kind of funny how CIMA's style hasn't changed at all since 2000. He is still wearing the same tassel style tights and the over-the-top sunglasses. This was another fun tag from Toryumon. Chocoball looked pretty good in this one, it made me wonder what in the world happened to him. CIMA continues to be the best of the Toryumon guys, but I think this is the best that Mochizuki has looked in 2000 so far. ***1/2 -
[2016-12-15-Chikara-Orientation] Rock Lobster vs Ophidian
Laney replied to bradhindsight's topic in December 2016
I enjoyed this one a great deal as well. Rock Lobster isn't as over as Hermit Crab, but I think he is the superior in-ring worker. This match is a lot of fun just for all the kids going wild at ringside. They are just totally out of control and it's awesome to see them so into the match. -
This is not on the same level as their match the month prior. This is still a good match, but it has nowhere near the same intensity. Everything was good in the ring, but there wasn't much heat to this. It's not that the crowd was dead or anything; it just seems like both guys weren't really working the crowd into the match like they did the month before. ***1/4

[2000-01-23-WWF-Royal Rumble] HHH vs Cactus Jack (Street Fight)
Laney replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in January 2000
I thought this was the greatest thing ever when I watched it live at 10 years old. This match still holds up for me and I've probably watched it countless times. My only real complaint is that the commentary could have done a better job of tying The Rock's interference as vindication for what he did to a handcuffed Foley a year ago at the Rumble. Brutal match and this is what established HHH as a top guy and a legitimate champion. ***** -
[2000-02-01-CMLL] Mr Niebla & Olimpico vs Blue Panther & Rencor Latino
Laney replied to soup23's topic in February 2000
What an amazing and disgusting spectacle. Olimpico just gushes blood in this one in disgusting fashion and Blue Panther licks the blood up like a manic. This just oozes with hatred, but has some nice lucha exchanges as well. This is short but very effective and I loved every minute of it. **** -
I thought this was a pretty solid match, but wasn't anything spectacular. There was a major slip up from Ohtani on the ropes here which was the most memorable part of this match. The in-ring work was good and it seemed like they gave Wagner a lot of time in this one. Overall, it's nothing that I would go out of my way to watch, but there's more good than bad in this. ***1/2

This match is a lot better than you would expect it to be. This reminded me of the Diesel vs Bret series of matches. Sid isn't known to be one of the best wrestlers, but this certainly didn't feel like Benoit was carrying him. This match was centered around a simple strategy of Benoit going after Sid's leg, with Sid doing an excellent job of selling. The fast tap out to the crossface was kind of lame, but it doesn't take too much away from this one. ***3/4

[2000-01-30-BattlARTS] Daisuke Ikeda vs Mitsuya Nagai
Laney replied to soup23's topic in January 2000
I really enjoy this style of wrestling when done right, and in this case it was. Both guys looked strong in this one and looked like they could take it at certain points throughout the match. This match was built up greatly with both guys taking a beating and working up to a point of exhaustion in the ending portion. Unique knockout finish with a top rope senton kick. Ikeda is awesome and Nagai was great in this as well. **** -
This match was pretty good and makes you wonder what happened to Billy Reil as he looked pretty good here. Low-Ki shows more potential in this and you can see signs of him becoming the man on the indie scene in the next year. This is the typical high level indie match of this time period. Innovative moves but lacking a bit in the selling department, but overall a fun watch. ***1/4

This didn't measure up to the other trios match from this same night. It was fun, but nowhere near the same level of hatred. This had three short falls with the stakes of this feud not really being shown until the final fall when the Villanos jump Atlantis to help Villano III pick up the victory. It was funny seeing Emilio Charles nail himself in the nuts when he hits the seated senton near the end of this match. Overall, I thought this was a fine match, but I don't think I got as much out of it as everyone else did. ***1/4

This is less of a match and more of an angle. That being said, this is pure awesomeness. The rudos just beat the shit out of the technicos and are DQ'ed almost from the very start. Olimpico getting spiked into the chairs is a must-see sickening bump. This is something that I could watch multiple times and is one of my favorite things from this month so far.

I don't know how many times this match has happened, but it seems to always be fun. Tajiri is clearly the top guy in ECW at this time. He has a unique charisma and is able to get the crowd behind him regardless of the language barrier. I think Akira Tozawa's US indie run is similar to this as he was able to get over in much the same way. This match contains one of the most beautiful transitions into the tarantula that I've ever seen. Everyone flows together very well in this one and it is an easy watch. This is worth seeing even if you have seen this same match combination before. ***1/2

[2000-01-27-WWF-Smackdown] Edge & Christian vs D-Von & Bubba Ray Dudley
Laney replied to Loss's topic in January 2000
This was nice compact tag team match. The WWF tag team scene started to get really hot at this time period and these are two of the teams that were on top. This was a well structured match with Christian doing a good job of taking a beating and then making the hot tag to Edge for the win. I recall Edge discussing the table spot from this match in an interview. The bleeding from the mouth is legit. Edge lost or chipped a tooth from that spot and was concerned about his perfect teeth.- 6 replies
