  1. Here's the thing with it though on a one night basis it wasn't totally crazy. It also setup the Stephanie/HHH thing. The whole setup was that he was using Vince to get an easy title defense. Mcmahon was off TV and he was backed into a corner by HHH to accept. Despite stacking the deck, HHH beat the snot out of him for the majority of the match. Eventually Austin interfered and HHH got his comeuppance. Now what happened later was a bit different, but in the moment it wasn't too bad.
  2. Great comparison and one I didn't really think of. Since Heyman was the disciple of the three wisemen I think he's had multiple phases where he channeled them. The two that standout to me is ECW Heyman is channeling Albano with the slovenly appearance and the cult leader like demeanor. Current Heyman for me is his Grand Wizard phase. Doesn't bump just stands back and cuts money promos. Not sure about a Blassie phase, maybe the dangerous alliance...
  3. And holy shit not great planning by Seth. You go to Edges home to presumably attack and harass his family but you left your own wife unprotected in the same building with Edge who *as a Babyface* has a history of kidnapping opponents family members and torturing them... Classic WWE booking... Sigh
  4. Yeah what he did was really odd. He took the name of another famous family becoming John Fargo and tagging with Don after he and Jackie split. That always struck me as odd. It was like Charlotte decided to be Ashley Valentine when she started...
  5. Yeah I remember reading in Gary Capetta's book years ago about how Gorilla used a different crew. He also was the one to try taping at pier in Atlantic City too. My guess is Gorilla who was a much younger guy was more energetic in running his shows while VJM was going through the motions as he was sick and going to sell anyway hence the difference in quality.
  6. I wonder how much of this due this being the end of territory Monsoon booked vs what senior booked at garden.
  7. Yeah they have a lot to go on here if they play it right with family history. IIRC Peter Maivia brought the Anoa’i family to wrestling as they were just diehard fans in San Francisco. The cousin piece with the The Rock was due to the loyalty the family had for the Maivias for bringing them to the table. Also more interesting to me is that fact the High Chief Peter Maivia is a shoot not a work. He was a actually elected high chief and descended from royal Samoan blood. Since the Rock is his grandson (I know not technically blood related) he would be of a royal Samoan lineage and could claim to outrank Roman as the Anoa’is are not of royal descent. I would love to see them play on this in the angle and be catalyst for the Usos turning on Roman as they take their issues to the Current high chief The Rock who overrules Roman. They probably won’t but it would be fun.
  8. 11/24/91 so 3 days before the show, run in lieu of Prime Time Wrestling. I feel like it might have been a bit sooner on a superstars but I'm not sure.
  9. It was on the Survivor Series Showdown show I believe which was a special USA ran before the PPV.
  10. Don't forget total bellas. WWE a is producer and gets a cut of the show which is one of their best mainstream crossovers. While it's lost some stream it's still a moneymaker so good idea to keep stars husband happy... And open up a Japan storyline for the show. Combine that with keeping DB on the roster as needed and it's a win win
  11. Also probably has a lot to do with keeping the Bellas happy. By all accounts DB is also really well liked in the locker room and by management so it probably makes sense to be willing to bend a bit for him.

    Wrestlemania 37

Man haven't watched wwe in a while... Is the technical director drunk? Those cuts.....
  13. Two other interesting things that are probably here nor there. The UN title I had heard was created for Inoki back in the JWA days as part of a way to convince him to stay and then was given to Sakiguchi. Interestingly Kabuki was the last champion before it was deactivated. So it seems like Baba revived the the title for the same purpose. That being said the title started in the LA territory so I'm not sure if this intentionally created for the JWA or just was a happy accident. Also what's interesting with Dory is that the primary title in Amarillo was also a version of the international title. Unfortunately it doesn't look like they match up. It is weird though to see Dory with it in US as it randomly shows up in FL and Continental.
  14. Yeah it would make sense. Patterson was a protege of Roy Shire was known to be a demanding and difficult guy to work for and was known for his vision for the product. It might have uniquely equipped him to handle Vince.
  15. I have a very under researched theory that if one wanted to make a drama about the Mcmahons it should be about Vince Sr. claiming and founding the WWWF. I mean he gets back from the war in the 40s and then proceeds to get farmed out to start the business in DC by his father Jess Mcmahon. Jess IIRC was the one to get MSG reopened to wrestling in the 50s and was able to keep the various small club promoters together and allowed them to promote big cards. Then Jess promptly dies in 54 and Vince has rights to part of the territory but never can quite get NY back which culminates in the 59-60 war with Pedro Martinez where Vince Sr. consolidates power and gets the NWA Champ. Factor in Characters like Toots, Rogers, the Grahams, etc and you have a really fun period piece. That said I its kind of split decision for me. Vince Sr. was more conservative and his product was more consistent but was never as exciting. Vince Jr has the higher highs but lows are just awful.
  16. Yeah and I think the question needs to be asked does he takes Barnwells crown as biggest thing to come out of dvdr. Also really weird to know the owner of my favorite ⚽ team was posting on dvdr (I mostly lurk)
  17. TBF Orton had not fully turned. He was still mostly a face coming out of leaving Evolution. He had shown hints of a heel turn but IIRC he didn't fully turn until after this match. So that might be the explanation for the babyface offense
  18. Bobby Heenan before he passed said something to effect of You only have 20 years of Good ideas in Wrestling. Vince has been proving that for the last 20 years.
  19. I think this can be said for a lot Wrestling history. Ron Fuller's take on the Atlanta war almost flips the whole thing on it's head. Now while's its colored through Ron's eyes most of what he explains makes sense is logical. Short Verison- Gunkel and Buddy have a disagreement about moving GCW TV to TBS, a small UHF station at the time, from the local VHF network affiliate. Gunkel is against it but Fuller is able to get Paul Jones the promoter on his side. Ray Gunkel is PO'ed and starts to rebel here. He books himself back on the cards and tried to get a shooter in to rough up Buddy (which didn't work as he was also a shooter). Realizing what was going down Buddy swap his shares in GCW with his uncle Lester Welch's shares in Florida. Gunkel is still po'ed and basically starts signing wrestlers on the side for a rebel promotion. This briefly stopped when he dies but Ann instead actually continues his wishes and forms All South trying to get Ron to go along. The story picks up from there but it really adds a whole new dimension to what happened.
  20. The argument in Hogan's favor is that he was trained by Hiro Matsuda who was notorious shooter so he might have picked up a thing or two and also he is a Legitimately huge guy so he can rely on his size to a point. Would I prefer to have Haku or Brock in a fight sure but you could do far worse than Hogan.
  21. Yeah I think there are some other factors. Yankee Stadium is notoriously hard to get to and the second stadium sight lines would have been terrible, especially in the upper deck which had a large overhang. Shea was proto cookie cutter and all the seats, save of a few rows in the back had a clear unobstructed view. There's a reason football didn't return until the 3rd stadium was built it was just too hard a configuration.
  22. I remember JJ Dillon talking about the Amarillo loop in one of his shoots with Cornette. He describe it as decent pay but a long trip territory but not a hard driving one as most of the trips were basically highway travel. They compared it to mid south which they considered much worse as while it was just as long it was all back roads which made the trips even more brutal.
  23. As I recall the Lesnar leaving didn't come up until the last minute. It was pretty well known that Goldberg was unhappy with the entire run and on his way out so the thought was that he would put over Lesnar on the way out. They had interfered in each other's match to setup the match, most memorably Goldberg at No Way Out. Lesnar apparently decided to leave for the NFL after booking plans had him putting over the returning as the Deadman Undertaker after Wrestlemania 20. That's when they flipped back to Goldberg going over. As far as Benoit, it was expected he would win the rumble, but it hadn't been set in stone where he would go WM. Heyman, who was GM at the time and not managing Lesnar, had been feuding with him so it seemed like the move to Raw was designed to be Benoit's screw you to Heyman. With Eddie/Chavo, Chavo had been slow burn Owen Hart whiny blaming Eddie for his misfortunes since SS. Chavo had made Eddie bleed in the lead up so this was a case of turnabout is fairplay.

    Mauro and JBL

Yeah the 3 man booths didn't work well back in the day either. Adding Neidhart in 91 to Heenan/Moonson did nothing and Piper/Heenan/Monsoon at SS 91 saw Piper step all over the two for the most part. Even Mcmahon/Ventura/Bruno had Bruno as the weak link.
  25. Wasn't that because there was an issue with marvel at the time?
