Jeff Jarrett. I didn't mind him as a face in Memphis when I was a kid or as an over the top cartoon Nashville pop singer in his first WWF run. But man alive, do I wanna cave my TV in whenever he's on my screen after that.
-
Part of the reason he gets the heat that he does is that he kinda sucks in the ring. Then again, while I don't think he's great, I think he's doing exactly what he should be doing.

Original Starrcade 93 Plans + Sid as Champion

Sid should've gone the Brody/Abby/Terry Funk route. Come into a territory/promotion, run a few angles, make money, then hit the bricks. -
Live Wrestling: What are you watching, what are you going to watch?
southofheavy replied to Grimmas's topic in Pro Wrestling
Smackdown is rolling through Detroit towards the end of December and I'm probably gonna go to that. I wish it was a house show, but dammit, I haven't seen anything live in about five or six years. I miss the days when RoH was in its prime and hitting a venue within walking distance twice a year. I need to find the good indies around here. -
That AoP/Swann and Jose match was a ton of fun, definitely. I'm going to watch it again after tonight's episode, but upon first watch, I thought everyone in that match played their role perfectly. That match was exactly what it needed to be.

Dude, I know I've heaped all kinds of praise on this, but damn, I wish this was an actual promotion that was on TV back then. I live in Michigan and it's very likely I could've seen it.

I want to see Asuka have long, competitive matches, so long as the woman across from her is on her level. And honestly, I think the only opponent she's had that could really match her physicality is Emma. I like Bayley a lot and they had good matches together, but she can't hang with Asuka in terms of execution and it shows. I think Nia would have a far better match with Asuka now than she could have a few months ago. I do think Ember Moon has that physicality, but it's going to take a while to build her up. There ain't much for Asuka to do until then. I think bringing Mickie James back is a great idea, and they should do more of that. Keep Asuka away from Peyton Royce, Ember Moon, Billie Kaye, etc, until they're credible. Hell, maybe even coax Sara Del Ray out of retirement for a match.

Funk, Flair, Windham were the first three to come to mind for me. The fourth slot I'd give to either Eddie, Lawler, or Liger. Part of me wants to put Dustin Rhodes and Arn Anderson in there. I'm making my way through the Portland set, and Buddy Rose is making a case, big time. I need to see more Bockwinkel, so I can't argue for him. There's also a ton of Puro and Lucha guys that I can say the same thing for.
-
The Portland set. Buddy Rose is living up to the hype and Dynamite Kid is a damn blade freak. Hell, the whole territory is a bunch of damn vampires.

Really what a stupid, ignorant thing to say. Calling a bad match an abortion is just plain stupid and I would be really pissed if I was reading that bullshit, especially if I was involved in an abortion or anything. Regardless of that, there is no need to use such stupid terminology. Doesn't bother me in the slightest, and I've used the term myself. Be pissed if you want, but having had one, use of the term in reference to a failed creative endeavor is pretty small stuff to me. That, however, does bother me. It ain't murder.

"I was gonna be Encino Man, bro." DIED. HA! If there were ever such a thing as Jobber PTSD, you've nailed it.

Yeah, man. Bitter Asshole Virgil is a nice twist. And it might not even be a twist, for all I know. The way you've written these characters has me looking forward to your card the most. Nice work, man.
-
Uhhh, yeah. This is compelling as all hell. I got a feeling Virgil's tale is going to be wildly depressing. And I can't wait to see what you do with The Gambler, for some reason.

DAAAAAAAMN. And, uh, he's right.

JCP/WCW, from when I first started watching wrestling at the age of four in '85 up until just after Hogan came in. The first wrestling I ever saw was an episode of Superstars. Hoss had Jim Thompson or whoever the fuck in a Boston Crab and Terry dropped a knee on the back of his head. Hogan cut a promo after that and by the end of the show, I was hooked. I watched everything I could, and what really grabbed me was the NWA, and more specifically, JCP. Don't get me wrong, I loved the WWF, but I was the weird kid on the playground that liked the NWA more, and NO ONE had my back. My fandom and watching habits would go through phases, naturally, but I remember really checking out on WCW not too long after Hogan came in. I don't think it was specifically about him, really, though I remember being totally over him and not really digging the fact that WCW's mainstays weren't the focal point of the show anymore. I was going through some rough family shit at the time and started playing music, so I kinda drifted on wrestling as a whole for a while. It wasn't until ECW, RAW and then Nitro came along that I really got invested again. But damn, nothing tops JCP/WCW for me. I've seen the promotion get analyzed to death on this and other boards, and it definitely wasn't perfect. But during it's heyday, it was the coolest promotion ever, in my opinion. Seeing The Great Muta do a moonsault for the first time tore my wig off. The Four Horsemen, Sting, 6:05 eastern time, The Road Warriors, The Rock and Roll Express, The Midnights, Jim Cornette, Clash of the Champions, Wargames...fuck. Do I really even have to explain it? JCP/WCW IS professional wrestling to me.

Good. Flo Rida sucks and that song can rot in hell.

^ That. Cattle Branding is so awesome. I love Tiger Mask's German Suplex. He gets such a high arch on it. It's very graceful, yet has a lot of impact at the same time. A good Northern Lights Suplex is a sight to behold. That move doesn't get used nearly enough anymore. On the suplex tip, I've soured on Tiger and Dragon suplexes. Too often, the victim kinda slides into the bump and it just doesn't look as nasty as those moves should be. Arn's Spinebuster is a thing of beauty, especially when it's used as a cutoff move.

Matches that would peak your interest ... What's on the table?

Asuka vs. Sasha Banks Pentagon Jr vs. Tommy End (I'm guessing this may have happened in PWG already.) Nakamura vs. Samoa Joe Revival vs. American Alpha 2/3 falls Sami Zayn vs. Lesnar Cesaro vs. Lesnar Samoa Joe vs. Finn Balor in a cage. I was a little non-plussed about Balor up until the last Takeover. If they keep this feud going and the two can maintain that level of intensity, a cage match would rock, especially seeing as how I don't think they've done one in NXT. -
Hey, I like Bad Company and Foreigner. Night Ranger had some rippers, too. But, hey, there are a lot of shitty cover bands playing those songs tonight. Just bein' real. Fuck The Eagles, though.
-
Life in the Fast Lane, Gimme Three Steps, Rock and Roll (the drummer totally botches the drum intro), Some Kind of Wonderful, China Grove... I feel like there might be some Night Ranger in there. Definitely some Bad Company and Foreigner.

I think y'all just convinced me to pick up that there Buddy Rose set. Or should I wait for the Portland set?
-
Yeah, he's a great heel, but turning him is pretty much impossible, especially since he's been gone so long. He's too damn good at what he does, the audience wanted him at the very top and never really got it, and there isn't really anything I can think of that he could do to make a turn work.

This was the first Raw I've watched in a long time, I think since The Shield break up angle or when Bryan came back for a spell last year. I tend to come and go with Raw depending on when it's good, and I honestly have not been able to be bothered in a long time. But, DAMN, it is pretty much a night and day difference from when I stopped watching. That crowd couldn't be bothered to care at all, and the show is just fucking listless. The ADR/Kalisto match was cool, and it's awesome that Kalisto got the win. But beyond that...yeesh. It's boring. Brock woke the crowd up at the end, but even still, it wasn't anything crazy. Looks like I'll be watching the Rumble and Mania, but ignoring everything else save NXT. It's weird to think, though, that WWE was on fire not that long ago, even with their missteps.

A-1 on the list is to go to a live show. I haven't been to a live wrestling show in years. I might take the plunge and spend way too much money on a ticket for NXT in Detroit. I gotta finish the Horsemen set. I'm almost halfway through. I'm also working my way through the 94 set. If the NWA 80s set comes out this year, I'm gonna grab that and participate in voting. I'd also like to delve into a promotion, time period, and a wrestler that I'm not all that familiar with. Maybe Buddy Rose, maybe something a little more current. We'll see. I've got a lot on my plate this year. I'd also like to participate here more. My depth of knowledge doesn't come anywhere close to a lot of the guys here, so I often don't feel that I have much to add. Fuck it.
