[1990-04-21-USWA-Championship Sports] Music Video: Jerry Lawler
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
The cover of the song is distracting me from the awesomeness of the video package. Lawler as a heel is not fun to watch in full matches, but the snippets are good. Also, I want to see that slugfest with the Dutchman in full.- 10 replies

Austin cuts a good promo, Adams is upset with his choice of women. Why Adams, the guy who has the temper, is walking away after that slap is beyond me. Austin and Jeannie are tight-lipped about her connection to Adams.

[1990-04-25-USWA-Evansville TV] Jerry Lawler local promo
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
Yeah, shame we don't get to see that match because now I want to. Gossett taking a beating from 4 guys seems like something worth watching. Also, could he get up to answer a 10 count after getting beaten up by one guy??- 8 replies

[1990-04-28-WWF-Saturday Night's Main Event] Hart Foundation vs Rockers
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
Harts with a heel promo before the match? Not heels during except for the apron knee from Bret. Good, fast-paced tag. Demolition being at ringside ruins everything at the end. So all of these teams are babyfaces? That seems like some bad planning. -
Tito tripping over Perfect on the drop down made me remember something I'd once heard some pro wrestler say. The way the move was supposed to be executed was to dive at your opponent's legs and try to trip them. Curt was trained old school, as was Santana, so I'm guessing they were putting that one to use. Fun match between two guys who could go and didn't get much of a chance to anymore.

[1990-04-28-WWF-Saturday Night's Main Event] Hulk Hogan vs Mr Perfect
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
I was thinking Perfect was a good guy to have as Hogan's first "big" opponent after Warrior. Big bumps and lots of stalling to make the Hulkster look good on national TV. That the outcome was never in doubt is probably not something that was considered in the planning.- 13 replies

[1990-04-22-NWA-Main Event] Midnight Express vs Rock & Roll Express
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
Great Nick Patrick spot for sure. Eaton really shines in this one. Hated the interference ending, but oh well. Thought Robert hit some really crisp stuff as well. -
[1990-04-20-NWA-Power Hour] Midnight Express vs Brian Pillman & Tom Zenk
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
Pillman is on fire early. Both Midnights are really great at making anybody look good, but Bobby is in another world so far on the set. And when the Midnights get on offense things actually pick up due to them still being cutting edge with their offense years later. Could have used more FIP on Pillman and less Zenk (always), but well worth the time. -
Not a big fan of heel Lawler matches, but this is passable. Just don't care for the whole schtick and agree with Loss and Pete on why. Maybe it IS laziness, or maybe it's just how heel Lawler put over all of the way-under-par guys he had to make look like real challenges. It worked to a point, but it wears on me nonetheless.

[1990-04-21-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler and The Thriller
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
Man, one thing you forget during Lawler's big heel run is how damn great he is at selling. Kind of odd, that. -
[1990-04-21-USWA-Championship Sports] Interview: Jerry Lawler
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
Travis chased Lawler, Gossett, Garvin and the DWBs away after the Jarrett match. Wasn't thrilled by the overuse of "punk" here. Otherwise fine promo.- 13 replies

Rockin' Randy is nowhere over 240. Damn you Bill Dundee!! Lawler giving the full-on sell of a whiffed Nitron punch and trying to break his neck bumping for it is incredible. Nate really wants to get revenge on Jerry. They did a real good job of getting that over.

[1990-04-21-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler and Eddie Marlin
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
Lawler's reactions make this work. Otherwise it would have been way too dry. The "sudden death" rule seems like it could be a fun kind of gimmick for a promotion to use.- 10 replies

I was also impressed here. Rude kept that speed bag moving while talking! Very good series of vignettes so far.

[1990-04-06-NWA-Power Hour] Louisville Slugger: Ric Flair & Woman
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
So is this where the Horsemen should have ended? Ole on his way out, Arn hurt, Flair in a battle with Luger for the title. I mean, it works, let Luger have his run as the champ while Sting is working his way back. Sting gets to have his revenge on Flair and Arn separately, Flair settles into more of a beloved babyface right at the top tier role and Arn is a gatekeeper for the up and coming babyfaces. It would have all worked, but I suppose politics and all. -
I think Rude could have been something bigger than he was if he'd have been given this kind of gimmick earlier. He can pull off serious just as well as sleazy.

[1990-04-07-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler Loves Wrestling Fans
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
Lawler is absolute gold, as he is in all of these. If this is the one with the three teenage girls, I imagine his comments were not what was going through his head. -
[1990-04-14-WWF-Superstars] Brother Love: Rhythm & Blues
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
Valentine looks like he'd rather be anywhere else. One of the worst Brother Love shows so far. -
Loving Ole so far in 1990. The guy is such an incredible promo that even if he can't wrestle I want him to be a Horseman.

[1990-04-18-USWA-Evansville TV] Chris Champion & Mike Awesome local promo

If Champion's hair gets any bigger it will eat him alive! Seriously, that is some of the most ridiculous hair I've ever seen.- 10 replies

Good enough match for the heels involved. Hayes showed some flashes of being serviceable. Gibson should stay away from microphones and let Ricky do the talking.

[1990-04-15-UWF-Fighting Area] Yoshiaki Fujiwara vs Kazuo Yamazaki
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
Here's what I love about Fujiwara so far in 1990. He's like an old martial arts teacher. He is clearly physically declining and not able to stand toe-to-toe with the Maedas, Takadas or even the Yamazakis of the world. But he's got this massive bag of tricks that nobody comes close to matching. So he'll use his body and head movement to make stuff miss the mark. And he'll do that to bait guys into bigger things and make themselves more off-balance. And he's patient on the mat, he'll take a little pain to find a counter-submission that sticks. Also, he's very good at controlling his opponent's momentum. Yamazaki is really good at mixing trying to get in on Fujiwara with strikes and trying to catch him with a submission, finally getting one that Fujiwara has to go to the ropes for. Fuji comes back swinging, which plays into Yamazaki's strength and it pays off for Yamazaki. But not before Fujiwara takes a powder to slow Yamazaki's momentum, even if it didn't work. I really dig Fujiwara as this formidable guy because he can catch you off-guard in so many different ways. He's not going to wow you with big anything. He'll just sneakily get you into a spot where you are all of a sudden in trouble when it looked like you were in charge.- 18 replies

Anyone else notice that Rude was also very heavily dressed for lifting? It's like they wanted everyone to forget the whole slimeball, look-at-me ladies' man character and make him into a serious challenger in just weeks.
