[1990-02-17-USWA-Championship Sports] Music Video: Bill Dundee
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
I was pretty impressed by this. Cheese is expected in your wrestling music videos, so that didn't throw me. Dundee as the working-class, blue collar guy is the right play and definitely gets across here.- 13 replies

I was impressed with Pillman as well. Woman looks incredible every time she comes out. Flair's reaction to Pillman's insult is exactly what you would hope for. Time to teach this young punk a lesson!

I was amused by Ole getting legit pissed at Lex for smirking. Ole is such a fun promo and I'm not sure if Lex coulcn't help himself or was egging him on. I'm still not sure how Ole could have lasted as a babyface. He's just so great at coming across as a cortchedy, angry, violent old man.

[1990-02-21-USWA-Evansville TV] Junkyard Dog local promo
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
JYD is a really good humble babyface promo. Doesn't mean I ever want to see him wrestle in 1990.- 11 replies

Lowrance at one point (I forget if it's this match) covers for all of these nonsense ref bumps by saying Lawler favors targeting the ref as a tactic. Really good work by both Lawler and Dundee, doesn't come close to the LLT "eye" match on the Memphis set though.

[1990-02-10-USWA-Memphis TV] Interview: Robert Fuller & Brian Lee
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
This set makes me excited that I have the Continental/SE set. Fuller is really incredible on the mic.- 12 replies

On the Dave Brown being the star I disagree. But I don't think it works anywhere near as well without Brown playing the straight man to Lawler's egomaniac.

[1990-02-24-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler vs Ben Jordan
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
Lawler kills it (and everyone not named Dave Brown) here. Awesome segment.- 12 replies

So much awesome in this segment. Although I wonder how long Memphis/USWA would have lasted without Lawler carrying it on his back after the mid 80s.

[1990-02-27-UWF-Road] Nobuhiko Takada vs Yoshiaki Fujiwara
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
I thought that Fujiwara was in charge early because it was 95% on the mat. Reason being Takada didn't want to give him the openings he would have to when he went on offensive flurries. So once Takada realized that he had to either take Fujiwara down with big flurries or eventually get caught for playing too safe, Fujiwara egged him on with the corner sequence. Takada going for the leglock at the end was strange for sure, given the only time he was in charge was after a big flurry. Fujiwara's selling is really strange and not what you'd be used to as a wrestling fan. But he does sell for everything but that one leg lock. Also, his use of body and head movement to slip big strikes is incredible.- 28 replies

[1990-02-25-NWA-Wrestle War '90] Ric Flair vs Lex Luger
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
Can't disagree with the above. They nailed the power vs. wily veteran perfectly. Anyone else notice that Flair was getting a lot of cheers (it is in the Carolinas) early? And by the end, Luger was universally the babyface? It's a shame that the big, built up title match had to be used as the fulcrum to turn Luger face, but that's how it played out. Best possible outcome given the circumstances. Even if it points WCW in the complete wrong direction. -
[1990-02-10-NJPW vs AJPW] Big Van Vader vs Stan Hansen
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
This watching I noticed Hansen's selling over anything else. He sells the ribs like a champ, which probably wasn't hard given the shots Vader was taking at them. One of those rare matches where a lot of Hansen's offense looked less stiff than his opponent's.- 24 replies

[1990-02-10-USWA-Championship Sports] Kerry Von Erich and Gorky Park

Not much more to be said here, but I can't resist. The Von Erichs are definitely anti-drug. Never forget that.- 14 replies

[1990-02-06-NWA-Clash of the Champions X] Interview: Four Horsemen
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
I like Ole's promo. He's really good in this role. Sting getting jumped the instant he moves was the right call. Now onto the negative. WHY?? Flair is huge as a babyface. As mentioned above, the Horsemen always thrived on competition. You ADVERTISED for a six-man match with Sting in it. So right away on the show he's not going to be in it anymore? Explain how that is going to bring in a bigger audience to me please. Just poorly thought out all-around. I understand how it was supposed to make Sting, but you could have waited until Sting beat Flair for the eventual betrayal by the other 3. Just build the tension between the Andersons, Flair and Sting with Flair assuring the Andersons that Sting would lay down when the time came. The when Sting finishes Flair off on the 25th things go off the rails. Would make way more sense than what we got. -
Nice mostly-shoot stuff from Lawler. One very funny part of this to me is how it plays when you think about how a lot of wrestlers looked at Lawler in the 80s. He was a guy who barely wrestled and relied on punches, something they hated. I'm sure there were guys who would have thrown the "he can't wrestle" thing his way like Triple H did to Cena if there had been such a thing as social media. So Lawler being up in arms about roided up guys is pretty funny in that way. Also, Lawler (given his character at the time) complaining about guys taking shortcuts is hilarious. Great segment though in a very Memphis way. I am a big USWA fan just a month into the yearbook.

The Sawyer bump was incredible. Some of the Flair/Sawyer and Arn/Sawyer interactions were great. Otherwise this didn't make a whole lot of sense.

[1990-01-21-WWF-Wrestling Challenge] Interview: Ultimate Warrior
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
Warrior brings something completely different to the table than anyone else at the time. Or pretty much ever if I think about it. It's not something I can appreciate all that much, but there is something to be said for being one of a kind.- 15 replies

[1990-01-20-USWA-Memphis TV] Music Video: Jeff Jarrett
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
Something about a blowjob babyface video about Jeff Jarrett strikes me as very wrong. It's not bad, but I have such an anti-Jarrett bias I couldn't really enjoy it.- 18 replies

Brown and Lawler both knock this out of the park. Imagine if the USWA had some real money behind it.

Wasn't sure this should have been booked 12 days before the Clash, but the finish is right for the build. Crowd is amazing and I'm pretty sure they should have stopped in Johnson City way more often than they did. I will also echo the Buzz Sawyer praise. He's been incredible so far.

[1990-01-27-NWA-World Championship Wrestling] Interview: Four Horsemen
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
I think Sting's comment about "the little Stingers" does more than just tell you why he's not going to be a Horseman long. It also tells you why he reacts to women the way he does. He _can't_ be a guy who goes all in on the ladies the way the Horsemen do. Sting's the guy all the kiddies love and he's going to have to have a much less adult reaction when confronted with a beautiful woman to keep that status. Great stuff with tension being hinted at by the rest of the Horsemen interrupting at the right time. I'm guessing the Gilbert match, as much as I'd like to see it, didn't make it for lack of inclusion in the overall narrative. -

[1990-01-28-WWF-Wrestling Challenge] Interview: Jake Roberts
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
There's something to be said for being able to turn Jake the Snake into a beloved babyface without sacrificing key elements of the character. Jake made it look easy, but it seems to me that would have been a challenge.- 13 replies

I think we can amend something here. Bobby Eaton - great worker. No need to put "tag team" between great and worker. Flair as a face could have carried WCW much farther than heel Flair at this point for sure.
