  1. They did vaguely mention Warrior "not being the same", but that's all we get. Can't fully equate the snake bite to Warrior not being there because, you know, not really in the same universe. I was surprised when Sid jumped up on the apron. Where was that kind of agility or effort in his actual matches?
  2. I was distracted and then annoyed by the ref, but a good match and one I've seen a few times. Finlay stands out and I think it has a lot to do with what garretta mentioned about Finlay's offense being more suited to the environment.
  3. I loved Jumbo's reaction to the crowd booing him when he went in to interrupt Kobashi. And after this, instead of trying to redeem himself, Jumbo takes himself and Taue full on into dick heel mode. Misawa looked like he hurt his right shoulder or elbow. Was there a major injury he wrestled through around this time?
  4. I liked how Funk seemed to take more than a little delight in pissing off the crowd by working the match the way he did. I did not like the 7 or 8 flips over the ropes for no apparent reason. Funk makes this almost worthwhile. I didn't hate it, nor would I put it as the worst match on the 91 YB. I did, however have the thought that it would have been much better even 2 or 3 months later when both would have been more able to go. It did bring up the idea that as wrestlers you have to make the crowd buy into your match, not buy into what the crowd wants. Funk using that ridiculous method of control that the crowd was clearly doing "boring" chants in response to in order to get boos may have been an early usage of the more "meta" type heeling.
  5. Yeah, I don't mind getting out of my comfort zone.
  6. Benoit over Zbysko had to be an upset despite him being champ. Brito beating Humongous can only mean bad things for the former tag champs.
  7. WWC requests Bruiser Brody and Abdullah the Butcher on February 22nd.
  8. What a great surprise! Curtis and Cornette completely steal the show in such a good way. If Curtis had been 70-100 pounds heavier he'd have been a junior/cruiserweight guy to watch. And yeah, who knew Corny was such a good worker? So glad I got to see this.
  9. I was just happy that Luger was involved in something heelish. I mean, the guy did turn heel or so I'm supposed to believe. So him partaking in some actual heel shenanigans seems like a step in the right direction.
  10. Bobby puts over Flair's arrival big and I'm excited.
  11. Please tell me all of the matches between these two exist on tape somewhere and I can watch them. Such a great, unexpected feud.
  12. Really good match for two guys as green as they are. Leaves me wanting to see more of both, which is all I could ask for. I will agree about JR on commentary. Shitting all over Paul is really not what I'm looking for.
  13. This is two weeks in a row of women being openly punched right? Hooray Memphis? Say what you will about Embry's booking being self-centered. Seems to me we didn't have women being decked by men, which is definitely a positive feature.
  14. The whole Dragon Master thing was a little ridiculous. I mean, so is Leatherface, but that actually works. Not sure if a guy in a dragon mask works regardless of height.
  15. More awesomeness from Jake to offset Warrior being really not good. But not near bad enough to take away the greatness that Jake brings to this.
  16. So I guess 2 cheap Abdullah knock-offs is better than 1. And one of them can do a moonsault, yay? Be nice if they were anything beyond serviceable in the ring. And I feel like I'm being generous giving them that. Fantasma throws a nice dropkick, but it seems like that's all he's good for. This match was....really forgettable.
  17. I feel like I've run out of good things to say about Jake as a promo. I've been down on Sid since before he left WCW, so I tend to wander off mentally. Bobby's promo was his best work in a while. You can tell he's excited to work with Flair.
  18. Tag team shootstyle match is just wrong. I can recommend the 2008/2009 Battlarts tags as much, much better than this. But also violent in really almost disturbing ways. This match is...why is it on the set? Scott hits some nice amateur moves early. Nakano does almost nothing of note. Yamazaki and have some okay striking exchanges. And that's all I thought was noteworthy in 28 minutes. I noticed something with suplexes counting as a point deduction for the team that took them. That seemed like a new thing.
  19. I liked this one a lot. A lot of these 6 mans on the Yearbooks haven't had the rudos just being pricks from before the bell to after, but this one has that covered and more. I also liked that everyone got their chance to shine both dishing it out and taking it.
  20. I liked the first 2 caidas, but the third fell short for me. Can't say exactly what about it disappointed me, but it lost me. They had a really good thing going through the first two though.
  21. This was a fun shootstyle squash. Would that make it a poorly booked fight then? Also, as somebody who has been trained to throw kicks, you don't ever want Fujiwara kicking you. His form is really, really good and I'm guessing Lato was hurting more than a little after this.
  22. And he always knew what that character was and stuck to it. I really love that Jake wasn't willing to sacrifice that just to get booked.
  23. So much going on in the new year. Can Lawler and Rich coexist? Luger working for Baby Doll is a good pairing if you ask me. And yeah, Ron Wright is definitely going to be a big time heel. Not sure if that angle would have been nixed by TV in 86 but I don't care.
  24. Muto is a strange case. The more I see of him the more I think it's really hard to judge him on the same criteria as anyone else. He just seems like he exists in his own separate universe the way he does just about everything. Watching young Muto work is such a trip because he runs different, he does even basic moves with this extra little snap to them that is executed in his own inimitable way. And yeah, he has some really inexplicable stuff to go along with it. The match he loses to Kawada in, I think, 2001 where Kawada is still in the ring selling the match by the time Muto is off the arena floor and in the locker rooms...and Kawada WON. Stuff like that is really going to stand out to somebody who is on the detractor side of the fence. I will say that whatever your opinion of Muto, he's really one of the true innovators of pro wrestling in the early 90s. There is so much stuff that just isn't as prevalent now if he's not around then.
  25. I also thought that Smiley vs. Blue Panther on the mat was a really good exchange in addition to the above mentioned match-ups. Cruz avoiding Dantes right away made me think they'd do more with those two. Did Smiley legit hurt his arm when it got tied up in the ropes like that? Good action all the way through and some superb exchanges. I am still partial to the los Brazos matches, mainly due to Super Porky, but I'd put this at that level for 6 mans.
