  1. Both are tremendous and huge discoveries of the GWE project for me. I have watched as much as I could find for both and right now would put Rose slightly ahead. Bock has higher highs but I have seen disappointing Bock performances especially outside of AWA. Buddy has never disappointed me and has elevated literally everything I have seem him in.
  2. Funny they ended up back to back on the final list. Both rule and are incredibly consistent but Liger easily wins this for me for versatility, longevity and much higher peaks.
  3. Looking back this is a hard one. As an ace, I would definitely go Misawa because he personified that role better than anyone else in history for me (though I would have Hash as #2 all time ace). As a worker, not so sure. Peak Misawa is easily better and his top matches smoke Hash's top matches (in my opinion atleast). But Hashimoto has good to great matches against a much larger variety of opponents and was consistently great for a longer period of time. Could go either way.
  4. Before 1996 comfortably. Still after 1996 has a ton of great stuff - Incredibly loaded 1997, Battlarts/Futen, 97-99 RINGS, IWRG, 2001- 06 NOAH, mid 2000s ROH. For all the garbage they put out, WWE also has quite a lot of good-great matches.
  5. Santo has a longer duration of quality but Dandy wins for me because of higher peaks and versatility. It's close though.
  6. 1) Jumbo Tsuruta - Mr. All Japan for me and the easy #1. 70s young gun, 80s top guy and 90s grumpy vet all tremendous runs 2) Mitsuharu Misawa - The definite ace when the promotion produced some of the greatest wrestling in history 3) Genichiro Tenryu - Tremendous 80s and early 2000s stuff 4) Terry Funk - Babyface Terry Funk in All Japan is one of my favorite things in wrestling 5/6/7) Kobashi/Kawada/Taue - Not much to separate them for 90s All Japan 8) Jun Akiyama - Really great in second half 90s and in my opinion is carrying All Japan on his back currently 9) Stan Hansen - Bulldozer in the 80s and aging vet in 90s. Tons of great matches 10) Giant Baba - Great stuff sprinkled over a few decades
  7. As of right now I think this is the best joshi match ever. Everything great about pro wrestling encapsulated in about 40 minutes. The non-decisive finish also sets up the rematch perfectly. I completely understand if anyone has this as their GOAT match. *****
  8. Strongly agree with this. Does not age well is literally the last thing I would say about this match. Meltzer's review of this match is honestly pretty bad because he puts all the emphasis on Liger's spots (which are amazing mind you) but completely ignores the aspects that truly make it great. Anyways PeteF3's review and the initial reviews of Loss are tremendous and pretty much sum up why this is a near perfect absolute all time classic, IMO. *****
  9. A masterpiece. Honestly thought the initial portion did an amazing job to set up the story of the match and the characters and the Santo vs. Dandy portion had some of the best brawling ever. *****
  10. Easily the best death match ever. It was based around teases, selling and building to and culminating in a few holy shit spots instead of mindless violence. I wish this was the norm today. **** 1/2 - **** 3/4
  11. High-end all-out slugfest. But the real greatness resides in their amazing selling of the pain and damage and in them genuinely trying pound the other into oblivion, instead of it being a pointless pissing match. **** 1/4
  12. The second best match built around dueling body part work ever (behind Samurai vs. Ohtani 1/96). An absolute masterclass of selling and limb psychology. ****1/4
  13. One of the better matches of the decade. Great mixture of strong matwork, crazy violence, storytelling and comedy with a genuinely epic finishing stretch. ****3/8
  14. Really good stuff. Tons of action held together by Jun's masterful selling. *** 3/4
  15. Honestly I thought the Misawa vs. Kawada match was really good and an interesting chapter in their rivalry (which AJPW had kind of bungled at this point). Only these guys could cram that level of storytelling into 7 minutes. An exhausted and hurt Misawa trying to survive but being unable to. Kawada's post match mannerisms and the crowd supporting Misawa were perfect. There is no reaction from him, no joy, because he knows his first singles victory was hardly a definite one and so far he has only been able to beat Misawa with the help of Taue or after Misawa had already wrestled a 30 minute draw. *** 1/2
  16. Tenryu's execution fits his character perfectly for me. I just can't imagine him with smooth and perfectly executed offense. Honestly don't even think the offense is that sloppy, just rough around the edges which is a big distinction.
  17. Wait I don't understand what your criteria is if you disagree with every pick so far. Most people are picking wrestlers based on this. Also as for Loss saying Iizuka being "better" than Hash, it's in terms of base skills and not in terms of the stuff highlighted so obviously he thinks overall Hash is definitely the superior pro wrestler, which is basically the premise of the thread.
  18. One of the best tag matches of the decade. Just non-stop action with intensity, violence, blood, psychology and selling. Incredible amount of hate too. My favorite spot is where Jumbo is seconds away from being beaten but Tenryu is more concerned with beating the fuck out of Choshu at ringside than saving the match. **** 1/2
  19. More that I think about it, Jerry Lawler is pretty much the epitome of this. If you look at the little details of his matches, there is hardly anything there. Kind of an nonathletic guy (not in an able to do flips and fly kind of sense, but in terms of how he moved or how fluid he looked) who threw a lot of punches and actually did very little of anything else. He seems extremely limited. Yet almost every match of his as a whole is, at worst, decent to good regardless of opponent or length mainly because of his presence, charisma and ability to pace a match.
  20. The first time I saw this about 3 years ago, I was shocked by how amazing it actually was because no one ever talked about it as a classic match especially compared to highly pimped RINGS matches like Tamura/Kohsaka and the Tamura/Han series. Anyways this is an insanely good match. 15 minutes of epic matwork and storytelling followed by maybe the 5 most dramatic minutes of wrestling ever. *****
  21. Amazing finish and cool character work from Flair but most of the match is pretty underwhelming. I have tried to follow the storytelling points mentioned above (a really good positive review of the match) but just can't see them. The Wrestlewar 90 match does a much better job of presenting the "Flair being forced to change strategies and became more heelish due to Luger's power" story, IMO.
  22. I am probably on an island in thinking this is actually better than their December hair match. It is an impressive amalgamation of styles and I can count on one hand the people in wrestling history who could have had a match like this. The DQ falls are also awesome and logical in my opinion.
  23. This might be a controversial opinion but I think this match is easily better than Stan vs. Kawada 2/93 and even better than Stan vs. Kobashi 7/93. Simply phenomenal selling of the bad ribs by Hansen, among the best I have ever seen for injured body part selling. The way he fought his way back and still looked like a force despite being vulnerable was also fantastic. But in no way was it a one man show. Taue gave an amazingly focused offensive performance, attacking the ribs at all sorts of angles. He also added awesome heelish touches I couldn't see any of his peers doing. I liked how he was a total dick while working over the ribs but near the end almost became a sympathetic underdog because even an injured Stan Hansen is so dangerous. Tremendous all around and a match I hope others take another look at. **** 1/2
  24. This contains great, great matwork. Shocking. Tamura nails the role of the ace ****
