[1990-01-06-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler and King Cobra
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
Lawler making the racist comments and payoff to the joke was entertaining. I always loved enforcer Eddie Marlin and him and Lawler get into a pretty good spat. King Cobra definitely doesn't seem to be much of a talker evidenced by what we see here but 1990 looks to be shaping up as a great year for Lawler with him playing a different role from what I am used to seeing.- 20 replies

[1990-01-04-AJW] Akira Hokuto & Yumiko Hotta vs Toshiyo Yamada & Etsuko Mita
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
I had trouble connecting to this as well until the sleeper spots. I attribute some of that to the setting, crowd, and Hokuto's overall demeaner being so drastically different from what I am used to. Nice to see Mita working well this early on and her being bloody at the end and Hotta's loopy selling of the sleeper will be the takeaway points for me in this match. Felt like a good intro to joshi for 1990 but i hope better things are coming.- 21 replies

[1990-01-06-USWA-Memphis TV] Dustin Rhodes and Gary Young promos
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
WTF was up with Gary's hair? Dustin talking like Dusty was jarring at first along with Gary chiding Dusty for not having an abortion. Pretty good promo by Young who just oozes sleeze.- 16 replies

Fun interaction between all pirnciples although you had to wonder if Jimmy thought he really had a chance in hell touting up Honky and the Hammer. Bobby ending the segment insulting all the other managers was the perfect segue to have them bickering with each other to set up the Rumble match. Fun segment that served a purpose in around 2 minutes.

[1990-01-06-WWF-Superstars] Rick Martel and Brutus Beefcake
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
THis must have been a bridge feud as I didn't recall interaction with these guys at all. Brutus proves his he a prick by cutting hair, ripping up a jacket, and then doing perhaps the worst strut in wrestling history. Jesse on commentary fit this well and I see Parv loving him on commentary when he gets to this on the set.- 24 replies

I think the comments so far have summed up this match pretty perfectly. On its on it is a fun match but nothing special but in the conceptual framework of Footloose and AJPW in the 1980's from the DVDVR set and what the undercards for AJPW would begin to mimic in the 1990's, this shows a good amount of depth. Not seeing a Kawada match from now until I finished the 1994 set, it is jarring to see how much he advanced in 4 years. The crowd was pretty dead but I thought the work on Rodgers was solid and Fulton gelled with Footloose better than I imagined he would.

[1990-WWA] El Hijo del Santo & Blue Demon Jr vs Eddy & Mando Guerrero
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
I thought this was alright. I always enjoy seeing young Eddy as he was able to sprinkle in some great spots early in his career but it just reinforces how great he was later on when he put it all together. I thought for a lucha brawl, the intensity level in this was a notch below what it should be and a lot of the holds were unnecessary. The Demon turn on Santo was pretty cleverly done. Mando has always been my least favorite of the Guerrero bunch and he was pretty clearly the least guy in this match to me. Defintely preferred the WWA lucha exhibition match over this one.- 21 replies

Really good intro for lucha. Even myself as a novice greatly enjoyed this match. First fall matches interesting pairings and I loved the crowd popping when Santo and Casas hit the ring. I also like how they mixed up the pairings in the first caida. The in ring camera work had a black terry jr. handheld vibe to it where you could really see the transitions. Second caida drops a little bit as Asai and Panther had some miscommunication but I did enjoy the handshake spot with Fuerza. Third fall really amped up the intensity and Casas has two vicious exchanges with hamada and Santo. We also get great signature dives from the principles and the match ended before it felt drawn out. Great start from a wrestling standpoint.

What a way to kick it off. Probably one of the cheesiest things I have ever seen. I recognized Owen and Finlay but whiffed on PN News. Oh well, got a bad feeling this will be watched about 50 more times whenever I need a pick me up.

I have not seen their 1999 series in a while but I have watched the 1991 matches recently and obviously the 1994 matches and to me the Bash at the Beach 1994 match is clearly the cream of the crop and maybe one of the best "Hogan as ace" matches i have ever seen.

Brian, Starrcade 1997 is interesting in the fact that as you say business was till really good for WCW in 1998. In fact I think that was their most profitable year. I just look to it as a tipping point and is a real concrete example of when significant cracks began to rise. For comparison, the main benefactors that caused the Enron scandel occurred in the mid 1990's. Enron prospered for years afterwards and showed significant earnings growth but when the bottom fell out it was easy to look back at that one point and show it as the deciding factor that started the ball rolling towards collapse.

Flair/Funk IQuit is one I blanked on. Haven't watched enough memphis but I would assume it has happened there.

Glad you mentioned it Loss as it is something we talked about and I expressed my disappointment in the match. I went back last night and looked at it on my Flair compilation that I have and it is the complete match because it is around 25 min in length so I am hoping to watch that version before the next show and give an update on how much the match improved by being in full.

Great show on a really fun topic to think about.

Thanks Johnny, listening now and I am kind of embarrassed at how many times I had hit refresh on the RSS feed of your show in the past couple of days to see if it was posted.

I know this is a shitload of matches but I would also recommend watching Misawa/Kobashi/Kikuchi vs. Williams/hansen/Ace from 5/18. I have to finish writing my other 1994 matches to watch post but this is my #1 match for the supplement set and one I have watched 3 times to confirm that it is a great 6 man tag. This really seems like a match setting the table for the rest of the year because you see Williams continue to rise as the top gaijin and we also get a glimpse of how he can neutralize Misawa which would come into play in their Triple crown match. Johnny Ace had a really fun 1994 and this match he really played to his strengths by staying out the way mostly and only coming in for short impact sequences. Misawa had some sub par performances in 1994 but was excellent here throwing out some nasty looking armwork on Hansen, drilling Williams with a lariet and playing the vulnerable ace role that would come into play many times more in 1994. Kikuchi had some nice cat and mouse sequences with Williams/Hansen and overall Doc and Hansen threw in some great double team moves. Add to that a finish where one of the main 4 guys in the match eats a pin in an awesome moment and you have a match that would probably sneak into my top 50 for the year and I definitely think it is comparable to the Kobashi/Misawa vs. Williams/Ace tags.
-
Ugh don't know how that happened but my #90 match of the year was: 90. Gene Lydick & Steve Nelson vs. Kazushi Sakuraba & Masahito Kakihara (UWFI 6/10/94) Really interesting technical style shoot tag featuring Lydick and Nelson who really impressed.

Cool Parv, this stuff will be good cross reference material for the 80's yearbooks when Loss/Will get there.

I think Lesnar in MMA is a little more substantial than that. I wold honestly say maybe the best wrestling comparison would be someone like JYD because MMA as we know it only has a 20 year history so far and Brock was the GUY for 3 of those years and was the lynchpin for the biggest buyrate in company history. JYD was a guy that again had a decent length peak but drew the best houses the territory had ever seen. Now, more people in MMA are able to sustain more longeivity so perhaps in another 50 years, Lesnar being there for 3 years will look really fast, but in the era he was one of the most dominant heavyweights in MMA for his era until the likes Dos Santos entered.

Have a lot of problems with this line of thinking. 1. Again I'm constantly amazed at how many people think Edge was such a great worker. Again that may be a preference thing and I think I probably like Edge more than most here, but for someone like Bruce to describe that as reasoning for why Edge should get on, what is his reasoning for leaving someone like Murdoch or Rock N Rolls off. I guess with Murdoch he may subscribe to Dave's theory that Murdoch had a lot of off nights but with the Rock N Rolls this is a team that he saw play at least as much of a prominent spot in his backyard promotion and I would be surprised if Bruce thinks Edge was overall a better worker than the RNRs. 2. His Brock Lesnar reasoning is completely ridiculous and I don't need to retread it but everyone talking about Brock being a legitimate candidate for a pro wrestling HOF makes me scream. It is possible to me that Brock is the worst person on the ballot. 3. His opinion on Apter is more apt than the other comments which I think are extremely short sighted but I still feel it is a pretty big straw man argument saying that most fans didn't buy his magazines. More people definitely bought PWI than the Observer and I know Bruce would champion Dave going into his own HOF. I certainly don't want to rehash Apter's influence and responsibility argument that has been rehashed here but saying that not every fan bought his mag seems like a lame excuse to throw out.

Incredible piece Kris. My dad was born in 1961 and grew up in Marietta. He was a casual fan but his grandfather was a permanent fixture for both the Cobb County Civic Center shows and the big Omni shows. Whenever you ask my dad about his favorite wrestlers growing up, Mr Wrestling II and Bob Armstrong are the first ones he mentions. Have one comment and question in relation to Wrestling II and the area in general. 1. I would love a podcast where you discuss Georgia Wrestling History in detail. I may be biased because I live and work in the area but I find it fascinating and still think it is one of the better wrestling towns to this day. I am saddened that by the time I was a kid, GCW was no more and it resulted in me only having a select few center stage tapings to go to. 2. I noticed when you listed the candidates that you voted for the Assassins were not on that list. Any particular reason as to why you don't think they have either the drawing power or legacy of someone like Mr. Wrestling II? Again my frame of reference is only from my family but in the same breathe where people talk about how much my great grandfather loved Mr. Wrestling II, they mention how much he hated the assassins. Once again thanks for the hard work and even though I don't remember my great grandfather, I feel we are forever linked with our passion of wrestling and pieces like this really bring that to life.

I liked the Okada/Naito match and both Tanahashi/Okada matches a good deal. None I have put in my top 10 of the year but I feel like I am in the middle of the Rovert/Dave/Flik camp and Dylan/Wrestling KO camp in regards to those matches. Some people liked the match he had vs. goto on 5/3 but I thought that match was pretty bad. Dylan - Callihan had an ironman ultraviolent match with Drake Younger that was interesting. Not enough high end selling or a cohesive story throughout the match for me to call it good but they did work at a real fast pace for an iron man. The brawling through the crowd spots was some of the better US indy brawling I have seen in a while and Callihan did mix in some neat spots to not make it a detriment in his case as WOTY in my opinion.
