DWB's promo is so intense. This guy had such presence, the more I watch him there and the less I can figure why they did this to him in WWF. Bunch of yankee fuckers.

Word. Good match, great angle, great turn, Ron Wright getting to fight for DWB was an awesome moment, just like it was the only time he got up from that chair before.

Candido was so great so early in his career. Excellent worker, excellent promo. I love to watch him in pretty much any setting but it also makes me sad a bit. I dind't think Blaze would end up in the river, which looked dirty and muddy as hell.

[1993-11-27-WCW-Saturday Night] Starrcade announcement
El-P replied to Loss's topic in November 1993
Watching the first few weeks of Okerlund in WCW, isn't he way more obnoxious than he was in WWF ? The running gag during Battlebowl with lecherous old man Okerlund fondling Fifi had run its course after the first segment... And he's already overpushing the damn hotline... But yeah, really good segment here.- 9 replies

[1993-10-23-SMW-TV] Interview: Brian Lee & Tammy Fytch & Ron Wright
El-P replied to Loss's topic in October 1993
I really like this angle because it's so organic in turning DWB. Even as a heel he was indeed having Wright as a father figure and here he shows he does care for him. Tammy and Lee are great making fun of Wright behind his back to the point that you have to feel kinda sorry for Wright despite him being an asshole. Young punks making fun and using an old man never fails to be repulsive.- 7 replies

Two things that make SMW great : Tammy's Tips : okay, Tammy was great at this point. Infuriating, obnoxious and hilarious. Darryl von Horn : namedropping a bunch of pornstars that I would guess Bob Caudle never heard the names of as the harem for his Egyptian Prince.

Great last 10 minutes, one of the better ending stretch to a battle royal I've seen. As soon as the Nasties are thrown out by Dustin, it gets really good. It's amazing to think that WCW had it, they had Austin positionned as a top guy right there, they just had to go with him. What the fuck happened (don't answer me, I know...) ? Of course it's not a given they would have been able to market him, we know they wouldn't with idiots at the helm, but still, they got so close to figure it out. Anyway, the Flair beatdown is excellent, and I loved how they really had dramatic turns before the real ending. 19 years after and without knowing the result, the finish took me by surprise and I actually marked out. I love when that happens. Dusty's booking as been terrible, but if there's one bright spot on his 1993 watch, this is it (I'll concede it to Dusty although Ole was also booking then, maybe I'm wrong). Great stuff.

And that's the story of this match. Too bad she wasn't feature on TV, I would have loved more Tammy vs Sherri stuff. Sherri ruled so much, and this is one of these match where she's the second best worker despite being outside of the ring.

[1993-10-16-SMW-TV] Rick & Scott Steiner vs Heavenly Bodies
El-P replied to Loss's topic in October 1993
I agree. I love Cornette, but at some point, too much Cornette kinda hurt Cornette. I hate the dog gimmick too (plus I can not get that Brickhouse Brown story out of my head, be it false or true).- 8 replies

The action is very good, but it really goes nowhere, I mean literally. At one point past 20 minutes, it's like the match stops, the guys look very tired, especially Vader (even Ventura points it out), and it slowly dies down. That what happens when you book a match 10 minutes too long, even when great workers are involved. Arn Anderson just isn't a very compelling face in peril, and again it shows here, no matter how good he is. So, good action but not much in term of drama, and really the final hot tag that should have been epic just feels "there". Plus the non-ending is totally annoying. Dusty's booking was rotten at this point.

After watching Tammy's lastest shoot interview, this segment is even more funny, of sorts, as she said that Margie girl had a actually pretty bad hygiene. Good stuff indeed. Really reminds me of a segment of an old frenct TV comedy show called Palace, with a rich obnoxious couple giving advice to poor people so they could "improve" their miserable life. I have the feeling Tammy's best stuff will indeed be during her SMW stint, which is a bit sad, but I'm looking forward to see the rest of those. She was getting really good really quick.

[1993-11-10-WCW-Clash of the Champions XXV] Ric Flair vs Vader
El-P replied to Loss's topic in November 1993
I never was a big fan of their Starrcade match so I was surprised to enjoy this as much as I did. One very interesting spot here is Vader basically forcing Flair into a routine of his, and failing at it, which is ironic since Flair is the one supposedly foring people into his requisite spots : basically Vader powerslamed himself from the second rope, and although I always thought that spot was cliché here it really looked ridiculous and stupid, as Flair isn't a power guy to begin with. Anyway, the finish is yet another annoying Dusty finish, like having 3 of them on the previous PPV wasn't enough, and the promise of Flair teaming with Sid was shady to say the least since the stabbing in Europe already happened and Sid was probably gonna get fired at this point. The foreshadowing of Austin vs Flair is salivating, it's just sad they never pulled the trigger on it, I guess because Bischoff got power and scrapped it.- 11 replies

[1993-11-10-WCW-Clash of the Champions XXV] Steve Austin vs Brian Pillman
El-P replied to Loss's topic in November 1993
One of the best 10 minutes sprint I've seen. These two have a great chemistry together. It's sad that everything was rushed in this Blonde split angle, and it's obvious they just wanted to get rid of Pillman to push Austin. Stupid people.- 7 replies

[1993-11-06-WCW-Saturday Night] Steve Austin and Col. Robert Parker
El-P replied to Loss's topic in November 1993
Parker was a rather annoying character. I guess it was the whole point, but I'm not a big fan. Fuller is pretty good in the role though. Austin oozes star power already at this point.- 6 replies

[1993-10-30-WCW-Saturday Night] Ric Flair vs Sid Vicious
El-P replied to Loss's topic in October 1993
It was a shitty crowd that was dead also for a very good Steamboat vs Eaton match earlier which had a reasonnably hot stretch to the finish. I agree Flair was really good at being an agressor, and Sid is actually at his best when he's doing the goofy bumping heel, since he's so brutal on offense. Sid had a better match with Sting at Fall Brawl, but Sting suits him better as he's got more spectacular offense that he can bump off of. You can feel Flair is trying to keep things moving, and instills quite a bit of intensity in the match, beating the shit out of the big wimpy Sid on occasion with chops, which Sid hates (he wouldn't take Benoit's in 1999). Decent match, and Flair can get all the credit for it. Fifi, how man Fifi... It was not a retroactive decision, I think it was taped before Fall Brawl. The plan was to get Vader vs Flair at the Clash then Sid turn face (this was the turn after the match) and have Sid vs Vader at Starrcade. So, the stabbing spared us a horrible babyface Sid reign in 1994, which would probably led to Sid vs Hogan redux. Picture the horror. I'll get to that point eventually, but yeah, Flair was working extra-hard with Rude and Sid and it showed. I thought he was disapointing early on his comeback, but he sure showed me some good stuff with way inferior opponents.- 7 replies

Lame. The Blondes had so much potential to build momemtum for both Austin & Pillman. But you gotta have the Nasty Boys on top of the tag team division, and Pillman didn't had any star potential, did he ? Yawn

Maybe it comes from the fact Eddie Carpentier used to put him over big time when I got into wrestling, but I always loved Valentine. The look, the robes, the stiffness, the deliberate style, the elbow drops, the face bump. My idea of what a classic wrestler would look like (along with guys like Flair, Anderson and such). His series with Santana in the 80's is tons of fun. He had some great matches with Backlund too. He's a guy I certainly wish I would see more, as I never get tired of him. Even his WCW stints when he was way past his prime in the 90's I find enjoyable. Big time Greg Valentine fan.
