Bash at the Beach 92 had a lot of good stuff, but the booking was head-scratching to say the least. Two non titles match in Sting vs Cactus and Steamboat vs Rude (which was basically the final payoff of their big feud). Two 30 minutes match on the same show, including one with Doc & Gordy who weren't over with WCW crowds. The Great American Bash was even worse in term of build, well, outside of Vader vs Sting it was basically not built at all on TV, and the entire PPV save for the title match was the NWA tag title tournament. And once again, tons of really long matches which totally drained the crowd. Then of course Halloween Havoc is coming with the most idiotic gimmick possible for Sting & Jake and Ron Simmons vs Barbarian as the title match. And, if my memory serves me right, another totally overlong tag titles match in which Austin took Gordy's place (OD I would guess), and the infamous Rude vs Chono match. Watts had a terrible track record in term of putting together PPV's for WCW.

It's no myth that WCW under Watts really took a nosedive in term of exctiment. The Dangerous Alliance basically fizzling out is extremely frustrating, coming off the amazing Wargames and the Zbyszko turn. The tope rope rules was obviously going to be worked into an angle at some point, but it really hampered guys like Z-Man, Pillman, even Steamboat. There's a very noticeable incentive on working more matwork based matches, which can be good with workers who do know how, but when every match goes strictly on the mat, it just looks artificial and dated. Funny to see Bobby Eaton & Arn Anderson work an old time Anderson match. Funny but frustrating too, although Eaton can do that style too. Watts' "pure sport" announcing comes off forced. There was a few good things with Watts, such as more clean loss (including the Steiners, Sting and Vader), and the fact heels could challenge each other instead of having an invisible wall between heel and faces, but overall, the product really isn't that much fun anymore. And Erik Watts hasn't showed up yet. Ron Simmons's win of the world title sure was a hot moment, but I think the lack of built hurt him. A few weeks before he was teaming with JYD on the undercard, and all of a sudden he's the world champ. Of course the fact he'll be fed the freaking Barbarian (whom I enjoy as a worker but who just doesn't belong at the main event level) won't help. Jake Roberts gives a little bit of excitement back, cuting great promos. WWF really dropped the ball releasing heel Jake so quickly, he was a hot character. Rude and Austin still carry the belts with pride and honor, well, they have solid reigns and feuds, respectively with Nikita and Steamboat, so that's good. But Paul E. really got screwed in the process by Watts, he's playing utilities at this point. But there's an odd feeling of dullness coming from the shows after an exciting first half of 1992. Not much in term of really good matches on TV either, especially during the summer.

[1992-08-08-WCW-Saturday Night] Big Van Vader vs Ron Simmons

I guess it worked for the moment, but I Simmons winning on a Clash would have been came off much better.- 18 replies

Would Shawn Michaels Make Your Personal Top 100?
El-P replied to Dylan Waco's topic in The Microscope
The KotR match isn't that much better. Not even the best match of the night, which was probably Austin vs Mero. And Bulldog had a great match a few months before with Bret, and would have a great match a few months later with Owen. I haven't watched it in years, so I don't remember how the One Night Only match compares. Bulldog had a fucked up knee then I think. -
Miss the last train in Tokyo ? Spend the rest of the night drinking and partying in a karaoke in kabuki-chô then go back to your hotel early in the morning to eat breakfast then go to bed until noon. One of the most fun night of my life... Anyway...

Sean Waltman's Youshoot is fantastic. Even better, as you'd expect it to consist of the usual moronic video submissions by people who think they are funnier than they are, or people trying to get their 'gimmick' over. I also enjoyed the Adrian Street one, although that was more down to Street and less due to Feinstein (who had clearly done little research, and predictably when talking about UK guys, only asked him about those who had made a name in the US or Japan). I picked up a copy of the Mike McGuirk one last week along with the Sean Morley Timeline (which I didn't care for - and I tend to find the releases from recent years such as the Morley and Lisa Moretti as less interesting/appealing to me), so may give that a watch in a few days. Yeah, Adrian Street is interesting because Street is quite the character. Sean Morley's Timeline was boring to me. I like Morley has a worker, but he sure is not a very interesting storyteller, and he can't help going into politics. Enjoyed the Lisa Moretti one.

Disappointing match for a few obvious reasons. First Barry & Dustin had worked two long matches already, and were tired. Second, they had no chance in hell following Sting & Vader, so Doc (mostly) & Gordy evidently didn't try, and gave Barry & Dustin an easier match than they gave Steamboat & Nikita, who they had pushed like hell earlier on. Third, the crowd was drained after a PPV consisting of lots of long matches without much in term of pace changes, and after the Vader vs Sting match, so they got barely any heat. And yes, Ole was a rotten referre, which didn't help, Randy Anderson jumping into pinfalls would have probably made things look much better too. So, a decent match that would have been much better in a better context. In a matter of a few weeks, Doc & Gordy beat the Steiners twice, including for the WCW tag titles (while the Steiners were IGWP tag champs no less) and beat Barry & Dustin to win the NWA tag titles as well. Double titles in hands, very much an AJ visual actually. One hell of a push that never quite succeeded for the WCW audience I think, Doc & Gordy worked too much of a japanese style at this point to get over huge there.

What can be add ? Awesome match, really Sting's first defining performance, he was indeed the perfect opponent for Vader, the chemistry between this two is like magic. I agree Ross suddenly is awesome calling this match, while he could be very annoying at the same time period, especially when he would just totally no-sell his color men. Gotta love the subtle jabs at WBF as Ventura is talking about Vader's muscle definition. MOTYC again. What a year for WCW.

Excellent match. Lost a bit of steam by the end as Austin does still rely on chinlocks a bit too much at times. Not as good as the Superbrawl match, and it really seems like the DA is quickly fading out at this time, which sucks. Windham has gained quite a bit of weight in a year, but he's still fantastic there. Austin has improved a lot since his debut, it's nice to see him evolve. Madusa's legs are killers. Where the fuck was Paul E. ?

Best match involving Nikita since he came back. I was really down on him, and I still think he sucks on offense, but I admit he was pretty decent here working against smaller guys, and actually good working outside the ring cheerleading Steamboat and putting over what was happening inside. You can feel Pillman is frustrated at this point and works really hard to show up Watts, including going to the tope rope often. Liger ruled, although was a bit off in spots, but you can blame unfamiliarity. Yes, kinda disjointed, but overall a cool match. (loved Ventura dropping Eddie Carpentier's name)

I loved those vignettes. Loved Goldust from day one. Immediately one of my all-time favourite gimmick, just like it happened with Taker.

Watching in context, it's amazing how quickly Watts made WCW TV boring after the great first 6 months of 1992.
-
Yeah, Cornette was awesome. Great promo, great color guy. Doesn't belong here.
-
Ted DiBiase was pretty boring and uneffective as a color guy.

Yep, I always found Piper pretty unbearable for this reason.

Ii would be remiss on my part if I didn't mention Guy Hauray who at times was fabulous.

I've only seen 1992, and I agree. Dutch was fantastic. He was funny, he was smart and articulate, he was getting the storylines over while being a total sleazy chickenshit heel. Tremendous.

I hate "Jimmy Hart the Hogan cheerleader" so much. Had his head so far up Hogan's ass it was unbearable.
-
That doesn't make it the "worst major show ever". The "most inconvenient one" if you want to. That being said, I have no idea how the audience would not be totally drained. Must have been a cool experience nonetheless to be there.
