mookeighana
Also, I missed Chris's post on the page before. Wonderful resource. Thanks! Here's one more thing... Here's what I tried to do: For the top wrestlers each year (top 80% of total domestic WWF matches), I looked at the average distance in miles between consecutive domestic shows for each wrestler. You can see how they really branch out from shows relatively close around the Northeast, to the 1984 expansion and how they changed from 1993-1996 (SMW/USWA crosspromotions, birth of RAW), and then the second boom in the late 90s (again, crisscrossing the US) and then moving into the current state over the last 5 years. Now, some of this is because of incomplete results. They weren't driving on average 500 miles between shows; it's just that I don't have full cards of all of the intermediate shows. However, it's pretty clear with 2x the number of events, top guys were certainly doing a lot further than a Poughkespie to Pittsburgh loop. (Also, this is just for WWF shows - I know lots of guys in the 1970s weren't just working for Vince and certainly were doing a lot of long loops in other territories.) Matt D
The haphazard nature of expansion shows is pretty legendary. Where they'd do shows halfway across the country one night after the next instead of doing a loop. And by legendary it means i'm not entirely sure it's real, but hey, that's why Windham/Rotunda claim to have quit!
KrisZ
Maple Leaf Wrestling was aligned with Crockett from 1978-84 but used WWF talent at times and it increased in 1982-83 but it was still a Crockett satellite group until Summer 1984. They're a bit hard to define. I don't know if I would call them a satellite of JCP. Toronto seemed to be its own territory: it had it's own group of guys who seemed to appear on the MLG cards. It also used JCP talent, and it also used WWF talent. They also would bring in the AWA champ on occasion. Backlund was there all the time up through early 1980. Graham's site is light on full card results as 1980 goes on, before getting fuller again in 1982. It has more of a St. Louis feel: major city, limited local guys, largely drawing from all over the place for big matches. Maple Leaf TV showed JCP studio matches a lot. KrisZ
And the reason for all the Hart confusion of course was Barry Horowitz had worked as Brett Hart in Toronto before Bret worked there and had to go by Buddy

Boon
How much credit would anyone give the Road Warriors for some of the numbers WWF were drawing on their 91 and 92 European tours? Royal Albert Hall shows, big crowd at Wembley Arena, 19,000 in Barcelona. A lot of those shows seem to be headlined by them defending their titles, typically against the Nasties. If their European tours were infrequent or non-existent before the 91 and 92 tours, I would hesitate to give them much credit...it would have been more the fans being attracted to the event more than the individuals, getting into "the WWF experience" as a whole, anxious to see "The #1 wrestling group!!!" (or insert whatever other WWF hype they spread from 83-present here). If Europe was a more regular stop in the years preceding it, then that might be a different story. I wouldnt say the Road Warriors were a huge draw in the UK, more the product itself as stated. There are a few factors in the increase on UK gates, Europe maybe different as Italy and France were visited by the WWF before WWF UK debut in 1989. The one key factor is the rise in Sky subscriptions between 1989 to August 1992, when WWF hit its peak (Although being a young teenager in the late 1990s I would say it was bigger in this country then). When Sky was launch its no secret that WWF programming was one of the flag ship shows which lead to the October 1989 TV special. WWF didn't tour the UK (I far as I can see) until April 1991, that's 18 months in which time Sky subscriptions in the UK without a doubt grew, there was definitely alot more merchandise on the shelfs (Sticker Books/VHS/Toys) also. Whether tactically done or not, the UK fan base which was growing and growing were waiting for the "WWF Experience" were made to wait for 18 months the Royal Albert Hall show before they saw a show again, while WWF programming was being aired throughout the week. UK rampage came later that year and early the following into 1992. Now we move onto the summer of 1992. The one major factor in WWF success in the UK has to be the increase in viewers during the summer of 1992, where did these viewers come from, they came from the increase of subscriptions from Sky due to its new carrot, live football. In the summer of 1992 Sky won the rights to show the "New" Premier League, which would of lead to more and more households subscripting to Sky to watch live football, in turn more and more people viewing WWF wrestling which at this time was on 4 times a week, (Superstars, Challenge, All American and Prime Time) which means it was probably the most at the time of any programme was on Sky. UK viewing figures would of gone though the roof almost instantly leading to the decision to run Wembley Stadium. We're the Road Warriors a big factor in the UK drawing, possibly? I had a pair of LOD trainers, but overall the explosion of the WWF in the UK in the early 1990s draws mainly from the Sky viewership increase. It was perfectly placed on the Sky One schedule, it came after kids TV on Saturday mornings and it was the programme on before amazingly popular Simpsons on Sunday evenings, simply but genius. I wish I could find the subscription figures for the early 1990s for Sky to back up my argument, but I'm sure someone like John Lister could back this up an even build upon it... JerryvonKramer
Boon, my own instinct is to agree with you and I made a version of this argument a year or so back but can't for the life of me find it. Hold on ... [search term: Wembley] http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?show...p;#entry5513181 Here it is, buried in the HoF thread. In fact, Matt D was part of it As I said back then, I still think it's pretty amazing how they packed out Wembley since: well, how many people really had Sky? Sure, MORE would have picked it up in 92 for the first EPL, but it still can't account for more than 4-5% of the population. A lot of people would have gone down the pub to watch the football, for example (and no pub would show wrestling! ha ha). Yet, I had friends who went to Summerslam who didn't have Sky! And I'm sure they weren't alone. The idea that Vince got someone who didn't even have access to the product to go to the show is pretty amazing if you think about it. Point being here Boon, is that I'm sure Sky figures were a factor (in the decision to run Wembley, for example), but it's hard to believe that the ticket sales on the day all came from Sky subscribers, maybe that could happen now, but not in 1992. I'm more inclined to think that a significant portion of that crowd were there because of their action figures and branded lunch boxes and lever-arch files. WWF wrestlers were household names even though maybe only 1 in 10 kids could watch the show (maybe 1 in 20 in poorer areas). I've talked about it many times but I think August 1992 was right in the zeitgeist of WWF being a big fad here. If they'd tried to run Summerslam 93 in the UK, I can't see that many people showing up. How Vince was able to manufacture that fad in the first place remains something of a mystery to me. Marketing genius, I guess. The point I wanted to make is that the LoD action figures, lunch boxes, lever-arch files, pencil cases, ruck sacks, trainers, t-shirts and so on were HUGE. The proposition to a kid of 8 or 9 of seeing them live was tantamount to saying "see He-Man live". The same was true of Warrior and Bret -- those were the guys with heavy Merch. I don't recall Davey Boy having his face on all of those things. He had an action figure, sure, but so did IRS. I think the massive reception Davey Boy gets on the day comes as much from the fact he's drenched in the Union Jack as it does from any pre-event build. Remember that Summerslam 92 was going to be beamed back to the Domestic Market and it's a very nice story for Americans to see Bulldog get a massive ovation from a British crowd. I'm inclined to think it is more packaging than anything else. I don't believe Davey Boy was a bigger star here than anywhere in the States or Canada. It's neat marketing to present him that way, but if he was such a massive UK draw then where are the figures after Summerslam 92? Bottom-line: The big crowd that day was partly because "WWF is in town" at the height of WWF being a big thing, partly because of the strength of merch and kids wanting to see these faces they'd seen so often on all their stuff in the flesh (and those guys were LoD, Warrior and Bret), and partly because of the process you describe Boon with more people having access to Sky. [on a side note, you know on the VHS when they do the exclusive with fans mingling outside the stadium? Well, as the camera pans across the queue, my friend was tying his shoelaces. So his mum is on the VHS but he's nowhere to be seen. Hilarious, he was in full Warrior face paint.]

Johnny Guitar
Was the steroid scandal stuff news at all in the UK then? No.Wrestling was way too lowbrow and under the radar for the BBC or newspapers like The Guardian to bother with. The rest of the press was mainly under the control of Rupert Murdoch, who coincidently owned Sky TV. In fact Sky had just finally turned a profit for the first time in March 1992, after losing a lot of money. Whilst the real big money was about to pour in from them getting the rights to show Premier League Football. No one was sure how successful that was going to be. Alot of people were pissed off that something they had been watching for years for free was now going to cost them money to watch it. The WWF had been and was still at that time a major part of Sky's success. With the uncertainty over the Premier League's success. Murdoch couldn't afford too lose the WWF, so their was no mention of the scandal on SKY news or in any of his papers like The Sun and The News of the World. Ricky Jackson
How widespread was the steriod scandal reported in the mainstream US press? I don't really remember reading about it in the Calgary papers at the time, but I do remember tabloid TV shows like A Current Affair covering it. I know the Apter mags covered some of it, or at least the sex scandal part involving Patterson and Phillips, but I don't remember how in depth they went. flyonthewall2983
I remember it breaking because of an article in Sports Illustrated. It was mostly in the Sports pages of newspapers and some talk shows. Vince and Bruno were both on Larry King in the spring of '92.

When I've brought it up in conversation with others, no one seems to remember it, though everyone remembers OJ Simpson's case during that same time. Everyone also remembered the Jon-Benet Ramsey case a little bit later. In fact, I'd wager most non-wrestling fans wouldn't even recognize Vince McMahon's name as odd as that sounds. However, Hulk Hogan's Arsenio Hall appearance is well remembered and was referenced many times in the mainstream as a reference to Hogan's faux moral depravity. That clearly shows on a broader societal level that Hulk Hogan was always a bigger name than WWF. That's further evidenced by the steep decline in ratings after the Wrestlemania VIII "retirement match" and Vince's struggle to find a replacement. So there was some mainstream press coverage, but it never got beyond the circus tabloid and into the mainstream press as the "Trial of the Century". People did, and still do to a much lesser extent, regard wrestling as a joke not worth caring for. The general viewpoint was "It's fake, so what does it matter if they take steroids?" That mentality changed with Benoit losing his mind. EDIT: Even the sex scandals that came out in 1992 got relatively little play on TV. Rodney King, David Duke, OJ Simpson, and other racially-charged stories were what got the play in the early 90's.
jdw
Neil is close. It was widely covered, both on TV and in magazines and in newspapers. But: * it was pro wrestling, so no one gave a shit * the key to the story was Hogan, and his leaving killed off the little legs it had * 1991/92 wasn't 1984-86, so the overall attention given to pro wrestling was low Things broke well in the sense of events to make it not have legs. Media outlets would do their one story on it, then move on.
pantherwagner
How much credit would anyone give the Road Warriors for some of the numbers WWF were drawing on their 91 and 92 European tours? Royal Albert Hall shows, big crowd at Wembley Arena, 19,000 in Barcelona. A lot of those shows seem to be headlined by them defending their titles, typically against the Nasties. Barcelona was drawn by the WWF brand and, this is not a joke, Tito Santana vs Undertaker. We didn't know a match order beforehand. Tito went over as clean as he was going to (urn shot and three piledrivers if I recall... I was there but haven't seen the match in decades). This is something that with the internet couldn't be done today but it was a huge deal locally.
pantherwagner
It is my understanding that the WWF expansion in continental Europe in the late 80s/early 90s was due to the TV industry opening up to private companies that needed new content. The two star shows for children that were proven TV commodities outside of Europe were WWF and Japanese animation (Japanese cartoons were nothing new in Spain, France or Italy, probably other countries too, but state-owned channels usually had the rights to locally produced animation as well as the popular US cartoons). After a couple of years big boom the WWF Superstars format was a failure in Europe. Nobody wants to sit through endless jobber matches if TV is going to come to your country maybe once every two years and it may not even go to your city anyway. After 1993 the only countries where wrestling was big were the UK and Germany. In the mid 90s I used to get all my WCW and WWF TV from Germany actually. They showed every syndicated or cable show and there was wrestling almost every night.
