KrisZ
That was from the era where they tried running Knoxville....they did it twice that year once with their own guys and the 2nd with the guys from Memphis.
sek69
It went unnoticed because it was on Impact and no one watches Impact anymore, but MVP had the line of the night when he told Lashley if it wasn't for him he'd still be in the other company dancing to Gospel music right now. Actually, it gets lost in all the LOL TNA stuff but MVP was pretty good in every segment he was in last week.
artDDP
Yes, because Hogan Sid 1 was such a success. Is it really true that Sid had Mania main event written into his contract? Ive heard rumours about this for years and always wondered. No wonder they were screwed and couldnt do Flair/Hogan by changing it. I know Hulk wanted to do films and stuff but it just seems odd to write a main event into someones contract. Much better than the typical "Let me tell ya something" typical wrestler promos. Yes, because Hogan Sid 1 was such a success. goc
That was from the era where they tried running Knoxville....they did it twice that year once with their own guys and the 2nd with the guys from Memphis. That's pretty interesting, I didn't know that Georgia had so much interest in trying to get Knoxville going. I know they tried at least 3 times then since you told me that Southeastern from 1980 Knoxville was actually run by Jim Barnett and had ties to Georgia. Kind of surprised they didn't have more luck in 1980 also since that TV was pretty darn good.
iamthedoctor
Considering Vince had planned for a long time to want Flair/Hogan for Mania it must have been a oversight on his part having a slot written into someones contract so it couldnt be done. goc
Not sure if this would generate enough interest for it's own thread so I'll just put it here: What's everyone's favorite announcing trope from the territory days? Just watched Killer Brooks vs. Johnny Rich from Georgia TV and Gordon Solie told me that was a match that could main event any arena in the world. I can't remember any time I heard that one thrown out where it was even close to true.
clintthecrippler
The split in 1979 killed the town for years because of how bad it exposed the business Can you go into more detail on how it "exposed the business"? Also, which split are you talking about? My timelines are getting a little jumbled, not sure if you are talking about Jarrett/Gulas split or something else. KrisZ
This was the split between the Fullers and the Ronnie Garvin/Bob Roop/Bob Orton/Great Malenko factions where the latter went on TV giving away all kinds of secrets about the other side and on posters challenged them to crazy matches knowing they wouldn't show up. clintthecrippler
Ah, thanks for the info. Did the Garvin/Orton faction have their own outlaw group or did they team up with Poffo's ICW after they split off from the Fullers? I knew about the crazy grandstand challenges and revealing wrestlers' real names that ICW did to the Memphis crew, I never realized a similar situation went down in Knokxville too. KrisZ
They had International All-Star which was tied in with ICW and yeah they originated the talk shit on your rivals with the Poffos using it on Memphis

sek69
Going back to the prior discussion, I never saw the point of one group playing the "their stuff is fake, ours is real" card back then. Now of course it doesn't matter, but you'd think any pro wrestling group would want to avoid that particular can of worms in those days.
Strummer
1995 wwf question. I vaguely recall that King Kong Bundy refused to do a TV job for Bret sometime in early 95. Thinking Bret was too small. Didn't it somehow involve Kevin Nash of all people coming to Bret's defense? Anyone know the complete story?

That'd be odd since Bundy and Hart were tight according to Bret himself in his book.

sek69
Its odd that Bundy would be concerned about doing jobs since he was the Million Dollar Corporation's designated job guy at that point.

iamthedoctor
Bundy was kept fairly strong until he lost at Wrestlemania. From memory I think he pinned Luger at the Survivor Series alough not sure why he would be against losing to Bret when he did job to Michaels on Raw. Didnt Bret and Bundy clash on Superstars? Thinking about old school themes apart from JYD, Piper, Uncle Elmer, Slaughter, Hogan, Windham/Rotunda & Orndorff did anyone else get theme music during the mid 80s? Trying to come up with a list on who got music before 1987.
